Yes—juice jacking is technically possible, but that does not mean public charging stations are commonly compromised. The term describes an attacker using a USB connection’s data capability, in addition to its power connection, to try to access or affect a connected device. To avoid an unknown USB data connection, use your own charger and cable with an electrical outlet; if you must use a public USB port, a compatible USB data blocker can keep the data lines disconnected.

What juice jacking means

USB connections can carry both power and data. Juice jacking describes the possibility that someone could use a compromised charging connection to try to copy data from a connected device or transfer malware. The risk is tied to the data connection, not to the act of charging itself. Ask Leo’s explanation describes the attack concept; it does not show that any particular public charging station is malicious.

What the FBI warning does—and does not—show

On April 6, 2023, FBI Denver warned people to avoid free charging stations in places such as airports, hotels, and shopping centers, and advised bringing a charger and USB cable to use with an electrical outlet. In an April 12, 2023 report, CBS News said the FBI described the announcement as a public service announcement not prompted by a specific incident.

The advisory makes clear that the FBI considered the possibility worth warning the public about. It is not an incident count, evidence of a rising trend, or proof that attacks are common. ABC News reported that the FBI did not answer whether malicious activity had increased. The available sources do not establish a reliable rate of successful juice-jacking attacks.

How to charge more safely

Use your own charger with an electrical outlet

Bring your own wall charger and cable, then plug the charger into an electrical outlet rather than connecting your phone directly to an unknown USB port. This avoids using the public USB connection’s data path. It is the precaution FBI Denver recommended in the advice reported by CBS News.

Use a compatible data blocker when you need a USB port

A USB data blocker sits between the charging port and your cable, allowing power to pass while preventing the data lines from making contact. Check that its connector type fits your phone and cable. Ask Leo explains the data-blocker approach; the sources do not establish rankings of particular brands or models.

Do not rely on an assumed device setting

Ask Leo says most current mobile devices require a manual step for data transfer. That general observation is not a guarantee for every phone, operating system, or software version. If you are relying on a device setting to prevent data access, confirm the behavior in current documentation from your device’s manufacturer.

Choosing between the precautions

Option Connection used Data path What to check
Your charger and cable plugged into an electrical outlet An outlet, not an unknown public USB port No public USB data connection to the phone Bring a charger and cable that work with your device
USB data blocker An untrusted USB port Data lines are kept disconnected while power passes Verify connector compatibility with both the port and your cable

For a straightforward way to avoid an unknown USB data connection, choose the outlet option. A data blocker is an alternative when a USB charging port is the practical choice; neither option requires assuming that every public station is compromised.
