Neither format is universally smaller: file size depends on the image and export settings. For a new site, WebP or AVIF may reduce file size further, with JPG or PNG available as fallbacks when needed.
JPG vs. PNG: the practical difference
JPG (also called JPEG) and PNG are both widely supported by major browsers, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. So the decision is usually not about whether a visitor’s browser can display the image. It is about what the image contains, whether it needs transparent areas, and how much visual detail you can afford to trade for a smaller download.
| Consideration | JPG | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy: removes some image information to reduce file size. | Lossless: preserves the encoded image’s fidelity. |
| Good fit | Photographs and other continuous-tone images. | Screenshots, diagrams, logos, line art, and images needing transparency. |
| Transparency | Does not support an alpha channel. | Supports full alpha transparency. |
| Sharp edges and text | At aggressive compression, edges can blur or show colored fringes. | Preserves sharp edges and small details more reliably. |
| Browser support | Broad support in major browsers. | Broad support in major browsers. |
MDN’s image format guide summarizes the core distinction: JPEG is lossy and often a good fallback for photographs, while PNG is lossless and better suited to screenshots, diagrams, and line art. “Lossless” does not mean PNG can restore detail already lost in an earlier export; it means PNG encoding itself does not discard further image information.
When should you use JPG?
Choose JPG for a typical photo: a product image, travel photo, portrait, or editorial image with gradual changes in color and tone. Its lossy compression is designed to make such images smaller, often substantially smaller than a PNG version of the same photograph. The exact result varies with image content, dimensions, encoder, and quality setting, so there is no reliable percentage by which JPG always wins.

When exporting, start from the original or highest-quality source you have, resize to the largest dimensions the page actually needs, then adjust quality until the file is acceptably small without visible artifacts at its intended display size. Inspect fine details such as hair, foliage, text, and high-contrast edges: these can reveal compression damage sooner than a broad area of sky or skin. Repeatedly opening and resaving a JPG can compound lossy damage, so keep an original master and export the web version from it.
JPG is a poor fit for
- A graphic that must have transparent pixels: JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas must be flattened against a solid background.
- Small text, diagrams, interface captures, or thin line art where compression artifacts would interfere with reading or crisp edges.
- An image that will be edited and repeatedly exported as JPG; retain a lossless master for that workflow.
When should you use PNG?
Use PNG when the image needs transparent areas or when exact-looking edges matter more than the smallest possible file. Examples include a logo that sits on different colored backgrounds, an icon with semitransparent pixels, a chart with labels, a diagram, or a screenshot containing text and interface details. PNG’s full alpha transparency allows the webpage background to show through the image instead of forcing a rectangle behind it.
PNG is also a sensible choice for simple artwork with sharp color boundaries. Saving such an image as a highly compressed JPG can add halos or blur around edges, while PNG’s lossless encoding preserves the source appearance. Google web.dev notes that PNG can be excessively large compared with modern web-friendly encodings, especially for photographic imagery; PNG is most defensible for graphics whose transparency or fidelity is useful enough to justify the bytes.

Check whether you really need PNG
If a logo or graphic has no transparency and its colors and edges remain clean after conversion, another format may be smaller. Conversely, do not convert a transparent logo to JPG merely because the result is smaller: the transparent areas will be replaced with a background color. Keep a source copy in an editable or lossless format so later revisions do not depend on a compressed web export.
Are WebP or AVIF better choices for a new website?
Often, they are worth evaluating. MDN explains that WebP and AVIF generally offer better compression than PNG or JPEG. WebP supports transparency and animation; AVIF also supports transparency and animation. The best result still depends on the particular image and encoder settings, and compatibility requirements may affect which formats you serve.
A practical approach is to provide a modern format first and a traditional format as a fallback. Use JPG as the fallback for a photograph, or PNG when the fallback needs transparency or exact graphic reproduction. The HTML <picture> element lets the browser choose among supplied sources and fall back to an ordinary <img> element:

<source srcset="/images/team.webp" type="image/webp">
<img src="/images/team.jpg" alt="The team outside the studio" width="1200" height="800">
</picture>
For a transparent illustration, use a PNG fallback instead:
<picture>
<source srcset="/images/mark.avif" type="image/avif">
<source srcset="/images/mark.webp" type="image/webp">
<img src="/images/mark.png" alt="Acme mark" width="240" height="80">
</picture>
The alt text should describe the image’s purpose or content, not its file format. The width and height attributes should reflect the intrinsic dimensions of the delivered fallback image; reserving the right aspect ratio helps the browser allocate layout space before the image loads. For a decorative image that conveys no information, an empty alt value may be appropriate.
How to choose and prepare an image for a page
- Identify the content. If it is a photograph, start with JPG or test WebP/AVIF. If it is a screenshot, chart, logo, diagram, or line drawing, start with PNG or test a lossless modern encoding.
- Check transparency. If pixels must reveal the page background, exclude JPG as the only delivered format. Use PNG or a modern format that supports transparency, and retain a compatible fallback if required.
- Resize to the display need. Deliver dimensions appropriate to the page and its responsive layouts. An oversized image wastes bytes regardless of whether it is JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF.
- Export and inspect. Compare the candidate at the size visitors will see. For JPG, look for blur, blockiness, or fringes; for a graphic, inspect text and thin edges. For PNG, check whether the resulting file is unnecessarily large.
- Serve alternatives deliberately. Use
<picture>where you need format choices and a fallback, or use an image CDN that can optimize images and negotiate a suitable format for a visitor’s browser. - Verify the live page. Check that each image URL loads, the fallback is valid, transparent areas look correct against the actual background, and the image remains legible on small screens.
Why image dimensions and content matter more than a fixed format rule
There is no universal JPG-versus-PNG file-size winner or percentage saving that applies to every image. A photo contains many subtle tonal transitions that lossy compression can simplify; a screenshot may contain broad flat areas and tiny high-contrast text that a lossy export damages visibly. A transparent asset has a requirement JPG cannot meet at all. File size comparisons only make sense when the images have the same intended dimensions and similar acceptable visual quality.

Do not send a 4,000-pixel-wide image to a page that displays it at a fraction of that size unless a larger responsive variant is actually needed. Nor should you force every asset into one extension to simplify a workflow if doing so creates oversized photos or fuzzy graphics. For sites with many images, an image CDN or automatic image optimization service can resize and serve suitable formats based on the request, reducing the need to manage every browser-format combination by hand.

A screenshot containing text, controls, or diagram-like detail is usually a PNG starting point because lossless edges remain clear. If the screenshot is photographic or a less exact appearance is acceptable, compare a modern format or JPG at the final display size. When making a screenshot from a live webpage, capture the actual viewport and state you intend to show; a format choice cannot fix a blocked page, missing content, or a consent overlay obscuring the result.

Common image-format mistakes and fixes
- A logo has an unwanted solid box behind it. It may have been exported as JPG, which cannot store transparency. Re-export to PNG or a transparency-supporting format and check the result over both light and dark backgrounds.
- Text in a screenshot looks soft or has colored halos. The screenshot may have been compressed as JPG too aggressively. Use PNG or test a lossless modern-format export, then check the image at its actual display size.
- A photo download is much larger than expected. Confirm that its pixel dimensions are not excessive, then compare a properly sized JPG with WebP or AVIF at visually acceptable settings. A PNG photo is often an inefficient delivery choice.
- A modern-format image does not appear for some visitors. Ensure there is a valid JPG or PNG fallback in the
<picture>element, that the source type is correct, and that the image URL is reachable. - Transparent edges look jagged or have a fringe. The asset may have been flattened, exported against the wrong background, or saved in a format without alpha. Return to the source and export with transparency preserved.
- The page still feels slow after choosing JPG. Check dimensions and total image payload, not just the extension. Resize files to their rendered use, provide responsive variants when needed, and consider an image CDN or automatic optimization.
FAQ
Does changing a file extension convert the image?
No. Renaming photo.png to photo.jpg changes its name, not its encoding. Convert or export the image with an image editor or conversion tool, then update the file extension and server content type consistently.
Can an image use JPG and PNG at the same time?
Not as a single encoded file, but a page can offer multiple formats as alternative sources with <picture>. The browser selects a supported source and can use the <img> fallback when needed.
Should I keep an original image separately?
Yes. Keep a high-quality or editable source and create delivery versions from it. This makes it easier to resize, change compression, or export a different format later without compounding losses from repeated JPG saves.
