The latest availability check, dated July 31, 2026, did not list the 1988 comedy in Netflix’s U.S. catalog. Netflix still has a title page, but its message says the film is unavailable in the viewer’s country. Check your own Netflix app because rights vary by territory and can change.
The movie is still worth revisiting for John Candy’s warmth, Dan Aykroyd’s antagonistic comic energy and its compact, chaotic summer-vacation setup. It is a nostalgia-driven rewatch, not a forgotten masterpiece—and you should not add Netflix solely to see it.

What is the movie about?
Chet Ripley takes his wife Connie and their children to a Wisconsin lakeside resort expecting a quiet family vacation. The plan collapses when Chet’s wealthy, obnoxious brother-in-law Roman Craig arrives with his own family. Chet’s ordinary, outdoors-oriented household collides with Roman’s status-conscious lifestyle, turning a getaway into a series of arguments, mishaps and escalating one-upmanship.
Directed by Howard Deutch and written by John Hughes, the 1988 film runs roughly 90–91 minutes and is rated PG. Its comic episodes include the vacation disasters, an oversized steak-eating challenge, the Chet–Roman confrontation, a bear encounter and a final celebratory party.

Why it still works
Candy and Aykroyd create the engine
Candy plays Chet as warm, overwhelmed and recognizable: a parent trying to keep a family trip from falling apart. Aykroyd’s Roman is smug, aggressive and endlessly provocative. Their opposing comic styles make even a thin premise watchable, because every encounter threatens to become another contest.
The vacation setting has a distinct mood
The cabins, lake, outdoor activities and in-law resentment give the movie a specific “summer holiday gone wrong” identity. It feels like a seasonal comfort watch rather than a generic studio comedy.

It is an easy time commitment
At approximately 90–91 minutes, the film fits a short comedy night. Its best-known set pieces arrive quickly, without requiring a long plot investment.
Why it may not hold up
The story is deliberately thin
The basic premise is simply a family vacation disrupted by obnoxious relatives. The film moves from comic episode to comic episode instead of building a particularly tight dramatic arc, and its final stretch becomes more sentimental and chaotic than structurally satisfying.
The humor is broad and dated
Shouting, humiliation, bodily jokes, insults, class resentment, marital friction and exaggerated male rivalry are central to the comedy. Viewers looking for subtle family writing or contemporary sensibilities may find several scenes uncomfortable or repetitive.

Chet is not always an innocent victim
Roman behaves badly, but Chet’s resentment eventually becomes extreme too. The movie treats that escalation as slapstick, even when a modern viewer may see both men as contributing to the conflict.
PG does not mean modern children’s entertainment
The rating reflects the film’s classification, not a guarantee of gentle family viewing. Expect adult arguments, suggestive jokes, aggression and dated stereotypes. Parents should decide whether that tone suits the children watching.

Who should rewatch it?
Watch it if
- You enjoy John Candy’s fundamentally kind, exasperated comic persona.
- You like Dan Aykroyd as a loud, confident foil.
- You want a short 1980s vacation farce with recognizable set pieces.
- You are comfortable with broad, occasionally crude and dated humor.
- You already have access through a service or can rent it cheaply.
Skip it if
- You want a tightly plotted story or nuanced family dynamics.
- You prefer modern, restrained comedy.
- You are seeking the emotional depth of Hughes’s stronger character pieces.
- You would need a new subscription solely for this one film.
How does it compare with other John Candy choices?
Summer Rental is the closest thematic alternative because it also turns a family holiday into escalating vacation trouble. Planes, Trains and Automobiles offers a stronger emotional through-line and more developed character relationship, while Uncle Buck is generally more focused on family bonds. Their current streaming availability is separate and should be checked independently.
Verdict: worth a rewatch, but not a Netflix subscription
The Great Outdoors is worth revisiting if you want John Candy’s warmth, Candy–Aykroyd chemistry and a compact summer comedy that wears its late-1980s style openly. Its nostalgia and set pieces outweigh the thin plot for fans, but dated jokes, overheated conflict and uneven writing limit its appeal for newcomers.
For U.S. viewers, the practical choice is to use an existing service, a free-with-ads option if still available, or a one-time rental. Do not subscribe to Netflix specifically for this movie: the latest evidence does not list it in the U.S. Netflix catalog.
