For most PS5 owners, no. A jailbreak can be worthwhile only if you have a specific, legitimate reason to run unofficial software and are willing to give up some of the convenience, stability, online access, and update compatibility of an officially supported console. The current Relapse project lists support for firmware 7.00 through 13.60, but its own documentation warns about repeated browser attempts, hangs, kernel panics, instability, data loss, and account bans. Newer games and updates may require firmware beyond that range.
The short answer: who might consider it, and who should not
Jailbreaking changes a retail PS5 so it can run software and operations that Sony does not authorize. That may appeal to enthusiasts interested in homebrew, experimentation, preservation, or security research. It is not a general performance upgrade, and it does not make a PS5 permanently flexible or immune to Sony’s policies.

It is a poor fit if your PS5 is your primary online console, contains purchases you need to access, or must run the newest releases. The decision is especially firmware-sensitive: updating may restore compatibility with a new game while removing access to a jailbreak that supports an older version.

What the current Relapse support claim actually means
The Relapse-Exploit project README lists PS5 firmware versions 7.00 through 13.60 as supported. That is a project-stated compatibility range, not a guarantee that every console in the range will exploit successfully or operate reliably. It also does not imply support for firmware below 7.00, above 13.60, or for every hardware revision and software combination.

| Question | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Which firmware is listed? | Relapse’s README lists 7.00–13.60. | A success rate for each version or model. |
| Is the process one-click? | The README describes a browser stage and a kernel stage. | A universal, repeatable procedure for every console. |
| Is it persistent? | The reviewed documentation does not establish permanent persistence after reboot. | That a single run survives every restart or update. |
| Does it provide online safety? | No source guarantees continued PSN access or protection from suspension. | Any ban-free period, detection rate, or number of affected accounts. |
Relapse’s README says the WebKit stage may require several attempts and advises reloading if the browser stalls. It also says the kernel exploit may hang or panic the console and that the user should reboot before trying again. Those are developer warnings, not independently measured failure percentages.
How the process can fail in practice
Browser retries and stalled pages
The initial browser-based stage may not complete on the first attempt. A stalled page can leave you deciding whether to reload, close the browser, or restart the console. Repeated attempts add time and frustration, particularly if you expect the exploit to behave like a normal application.
Kernel hangs and panic reboots
A kernel-level failure can freeze the system or trigger a panic and reboot. The Relapse documentation explicitly tells users to reboot before trying again after such an event. A panic is not evidence that the console is permanently damaged, but every abnormal shutdown carries more risk than an ordinary menu restart.

The project is provided as-is and without warranty. Its disclaimer names system instability and data loss among the risks. No reliable public figure establishes how often those outcomes occur, so treat them as possible failure modes rather than a predictable percentage.
Recovery tolerance
Before considering any unofficial modification, decide whether you can tolerate a console that needs repeated restarts, troubleshooting, or a return to factory software. Keep irreplaceable saves and captures backed up through methods available to your account and region. Do not assume that a jailbreak preserves every installed game, save, or setting.

Can you still play online after jailbreaking?
There is no supported guarantee that a jailbroken PS5 can continue to use PlayStation Network services. The Relapse README lists account bans as a risk, but it does not provide a ban rate or claim that every user is detected. Avoid treating an anecdotal report of continued access as proof that online play is safe.
Sony’s US PlayStation Terms of Service incorporate its System Software License Agreement. For a console suspension, the terms say the suspended console cannot use Sony services with any account, play games or modes that require online access, or access content purchased from the PlayStation Store on that console. These are the stated consequences of a suspension; they do not prove that every jailbreak automatically triggers one.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSony’s PlayStation Online Safety Report 2024, published in February 2025, says severe offenses can result in a console suspension that prevents the console from connecting to Sony’s network. The report discusses enforcement generally, not a Relapse-specific detection method or automatic penalty.
Account suspension versus console suspension
An account action affects the account. A console suspension affects the hardware and, according to the US terms, prevents services from being used on that console with any account. That distinction matters if family members share the PS5 or if you rely on digital purchases. The practical downside is broader than losing one login.
What Sony’s license terms prohibit
The cited PS5 System Software License Agreement is Sony’s Vietnam-region version, so readers should check the agreement for their own country. Its wording prohibits unauthorized or modified hardware or software used with system software, tools that bypass security or authentication, downgrading, and exploiting system software outside documented use with authorized software or hardware. It also states that updates may include security patches or features intended to prevent unauthorized or pirated content and hardware or software.

Because license language varies by region, do not assume the Vietnam text is the exact contract that governs you. The broader point is consistent: Sony’s published terms do not authorize modifying a retail console to bypass its security controls. A jailbreak can therefore create contractual and service-policy exposure even when a particular exploit is technically available.
The firmware freeze creates a game-compatibility trade-off
Holding a PS5 on an exploitable firmware can preserve access to the Relapse range, but it may prevent newer software from running. Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026, that some newer game updates may require firmware beyond the listed jailbreak range. Requirements vary by title, edition, and update and can change after release.
| Choice | Potential benefit | Potential cost |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on a supported firmware | Retains the possibility of using the project on a listed version. | A new game or patch may refuse to install or run if it requires newer system software. |
| Install the latest official update | Maximizes compatibility with current releases, patches, and Sony services. | The console may move outside Relapse’s stated 7.00–13.60 range. |
| Use two consoles | Separates experimentation from your everyday online system. | Requires buying and maintaining additional hardware; no source establishes a particular model or price as necessary. |
Check the exact game, edition, and update requirement at the time you decide. A game’s launch requirement may differ from a later patch requirement, and a future firmware change can alter the trade-off.

Choose “no” when online access is essential
- You regularly play multiplayer modes that require Sony services.
- Your household depends on digital purchases being available on this console.
- You need predictable updates, support, and recovery rather than experimentation.
Consider it only for a defined, nonessential project
- You have a specific homebrew or preservation objective rather than a vague desire to “unlock” the PS5.
- You have confirmed the exact firmware and understand that the project lists a range, not a guarantee.
- You can accept browser retries, kernel hangs, possible data loss, and the loss of online or purchased-content access if the console is suspended.
- You are prepared to keep this system separate from the console you use for current releases and online play.
Ask whether the goal is actually security research
If your purpose is finding and responsibly disclosing a vulnerability, modifying a retail console for everyday use is not the only path. Sony’s Product Security page describes a vulnerability-disclosure policy and a PlayStation Bug Bounty Program. That is an official reporting channel, not permission to bypass protections and not a guarantee of a reward.
What a cautious owner should verify
- Record the exact system software version. Compare it with Relapse’s stated 7.00–13.60 range. Do not infer support for a version that is not listed.
- List the games and services you cannot lose. Mark which require online authentication, current patches, or access to PlayStation Store purchases.
- Check update requirements before changing firmware. Verify the specific title, edition, and patch rather than relying on a general claim that a game is “current.”
- Protect important data. Make backups using options available to you, and assume an unstable process could corrupt local data.
- Separate experimentation from essential use. If losing PSN access would be unacceptable, do not make that console your only PS5.
- Read the current regional terms. Sony’s published agreements differ by jurisdiction; the Vietnam agreement cited above is not automatically your contract.
- Decide your recovery point. If a browser attempt stalls or the kernel panics, the project’s own guidance is to reboot before trying again. Stop rather than repeatedly forcing a system that is behaving abnormally.
Common claims that are not established
- “Every jailbroken PS5 gets banned.” The available sources establish that bans and suspension are risks and describe suspension consequences; they do not establish an automatic outcome or a rate.
- “A jailbreak gives unlimited homebrew and every game.” No reviewed source supports universal homebrew access or compatibility with all games.
- “Updating is always safe after jailbreaking.” An update can change exploit compatibility and may block the environment you wanted to preserve.
- “Firmware support means reliability.” A listed version only indicates project-reported compatibility; the same README warns about retries, hangs, panics, instability, and data loss.
- “A USB drive is required.” The cited browser-based description does not establish a dedicated storage accessory as a requirement.
So, is a PS5 jailbreak worth it?
For a primary PS5 used for online games, digital purchases, and new releases, the trade-off is usually unfavorable. You exchange official support and predictable updates for an exploit whose compatibility is tied to firmware 7.00–13.60, whose own documentation warns of instability, and whose online consequences are uncertain but potentially severe.
