Upgrade when you can name a meaningful improvement you will actually use and the benefit is worth the full replacement cost. If one problem—especially battery life—is driving the decision, compare a repair quote with replacement first.
Start by checking what iPhone you have
Support depends on the exact model, so identify it before deciding that your phone is too old. On your iPhone, go to Settings → General → About. Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility guide lists iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later, as compatible. Compatibility does not mean every model gets the same features or that Apple has promised support indefinitely; feature and app availability can vary by model, region, language, and carrier.

To check for the latest software available to your model, open Settings → General → Software Update. Consider whether your essential apps and features work as expected, rather than treating a model’s place on a compatibility list as the whole decision.

What would a new iPhone improve for you?
“Newer” is not, by itself, a practical reason to replace a phone that works well. Name the specific shortfall you want to fix: perhaps a camera capability, a display feature, or another improvement relevant to your day-to-day use. Then compare the models and features on Apple’s iPhone comparison page. Ask whether the difference would change what you can do, not merely whether the new model has a longer feature list.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
For example, if your current camera already meets your needs, an upgrade that mainly improves photography may not justify the expense. If a limitation regularly frustrates you and a newer model demonstrably addresses it, that benefit can make replacement worthwhile—provided the cost fits your budget.
Choose between keeping, repairing, and upgrading
| Option | It may make sense when… | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Keep | Your iPhone is dependable, supports the apps and features you need, and has no important shortfall. | Whether the benefit of a new model is substantial enough to justify spending now. |
| Repair | A specific, limited problem—such as poor battery life—is the main reason you are considering replacement. | Get a quote for your model and location, and compare it with the replacement cost. Check the provider’s terms and model eligibility. |
| Upgrade | Your current phone has a limitation that materially affects you, and a newer model solves it. | The full purchase cost, any trade-in credit you have verified, and whether the improvement is worth that net cost to you. |
When battery life is the main issue, price a repair
If the phone otherwise meets your needs, a battery problem does not automatically mean it is time to replace the whole device. Apple documents professional repair through Apple and Apple Authorized Service Providers; out-of-warranty service and other options depend on your location and model. Check the available repair options and request a local quote before comparing it with a new phone.

There is no universal repair price or battery-health threshold that determines whether repair is the better choice. The decision depends on the quote, your phone’s overall condition, and how long you expect to keep using it.
Count trade-in credit only after verifying the offer
Trade-in can lower the replacement cost, but its value is not guaranteed from the model name alone. Apple says eligible-device credit is applied after the device is received and verified, and terms apply. Check the current offer for your device, condition, and region, then use the verified amount in your comparison—not an advertised maximum or an estimate you have not confirmed.

Apple Support also cautions: “An Unknown part might affect the trade-in value of your device.” That is a possibility, not a guarantee that every repair lowers trade-in value. Read Apple’s parts and service history guidance if the phone has been repaired.
Apple lists iPhone 18 Pro among its current models, but that is an example of a current option, not a recommendation for every buyer. Model availability and commercial terms can change.
