Is It Worth Buying a PlayStation Portal Instead of a Steam Deck?

Buy a PlayStation Portal instead of a Steam Deck if you already own a PS5 and mainly want to play compatible PS5 games on a dedicated handheld screen. Choose a Steam Deck if you want a handheld PC that runs Steam games on the device itself. Portal extends a PS5 setup; it is not a standalone console, and both of its play options depend on an internet connection.

What are you actually buying?

The PlayStation Portal Remote Player streams games rather than running them as a handheld console. For Remote Play, it connects over Wi-Fi to a paired PS5 and streams compatible games installed on that console. Sony describes it as a way to access PS5 games over Wi-Fi without playing on a TV. Sony’s Portal product page lists a PS5 and PlayStation account as requirements.

The Steam Deck is a handheld PC built around SteamOS. It has local SSD storage and supports microSD expansion; game compatibility varies, so check Valve’s rating for each game you care about. Valve’s hardware overview and technical specifications describe the device and its features.

Which one fits your games and setup?

Question PlayStation Portal Steam Deck
What does it play? Compatible games installed on a paired PS5 through Remote Play; selected eligible games through cloud streaming. Steam games, with compatibility ratings to check title by title.
What other hardware is needed? A PS5 for Remote Play. Cloud streaming can work with the PS5 off, but needs PlayStation Plus Premium and an eligible account, region, and game. The handheld itself. Downloads and online features need internet, but supported installed games can be played locally.
How central is internet access? Essential for both Remote Play and cloud streaming. Not inherent to every installed single-player game; requirements vary by game and service.
What is the device? A PS5 streaming companion, not a standalone console or general-purpose media tablet. A handheld PC running SteamOS.

When the Portal is the better buy

You already own a PS5

Portal makes the most sense when your games and saves are already part of your PS5 setup and you want to play away from the television. It can also help when someone else is using the TV: Remote Play streams from the paired console to the Portal, so the game is not displayed on the TV. The PS5 still needs broadband and must be powered on or in Rest Mode. Portal Remote Play supports PS5, not PS4, and does not support PS5 media-tab apps in Remote Play, according to PlayStation’s compatibility guidance.

Your usual Wi-Fi is dependable

Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for Portal use and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. These are Sony’s service recommendations, not a guarantee of smooth play: Sony notes that quality can vary with the network environment. If you expect to play while travelling, consider whether the places you visit provide Wi-Fi you can actually use; Portal does not offer an offline mode for these streaming features. See the Portal product page.

You want cloud streaming, and meet its conditions

Cloud streaming is a separate option from Remote Play. Sony says it can work while the PS5 is off or being used with another account, but it requires PlayStation Plus Premium, supported geography and account eligibility, and a game selected for streaming. Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download to establish a session, with higher minimums for some resolutions. Availability varies by region and game, so check the current cloud-streaming requirements and supported countries before treating it as a substitute for owning a PS5.

When the Steam Deck is the better buy

You want a handheld that runs games itself

The Deck is the closer match if you want to install and play supported Steam titles on the device, rather than stream from a console. Its local play can be useful where internet is unavailable, provided the particular game is installed and does not require a connection. That does not mean every Steam game runs equally well: check Valve’s compatibility rating and the game’s own requirements before buying on the assumption that it will work on Deck.

You value PC flexibility

Because it is a handheld PC, Deck is the more flexible category of device than a dedicated PS5 remote player. That flexibility comes with the need to consider compatibility and the SteamOS experience for your particular games. If your primary library is on PlayStation and you do not need a handheld PC, those broader capabilities may not justify choosing it over a device focused on PS5 streaming.

How do the screens and battery figures compare?

Valve lists these figures for Steam Deck models; battery life is a manufacturer estimate and will depend on the game and usage. The figures are not independent test results. No directly comparable Portal battery estimate is established here.

Steam Deck model Display Battery Manufacturer’s estimated play time
OLED 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 1280 × 800, up to 90 Hz 50 Wh 3–12 hours
LCD 7-inch LCD, 1280 × 800 40 Wh 2–8 hours

These specifications come from Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications. They are useful for understanding the Deck models, but do not settle which device is the better value: a larger or higher-refresh display matters less if you cannot play the games you want, or if your preferred device depends on a connection you do not have.

A practical way to decide

  1. Start with your game library. If the games you want are on PS5, check whether they are compatible with Remote Play or eligible for Portal cloud streaming. If they are on Steam, check their Deck compatibility ratings.
  2. Check your play location. Portal needs broadband Wi-Fi for both Remote Play and cloud streaming. For Deck, check whether each game you plan to play needs an online connection.
  3. Decide whether you want a companion or a computer. Portal is for extending PS5 play to a dedicated screen. Deck is the handheld itself, centered on SteamOS and Steam games.
  4. Compare current local prices only after that. Prices and model availability depend on market and date; compare the current regional listings rather than assuming one device is always cheaper.

Small compatibility details worth checking

  • Portal Remote Play is for PS5, not PS4, and does not support PS5 media-tab apps while in Remote Play. See PlayStation’s compatibility guidance.
  • Sony documents wired audio through a 3.5 mm input and PlayStation Link devices such as PULSE Explore earbuds and PULSE Elite headset. Verify a specific accessory model before purchasing it for Portal.
  • Cloud-streaming eligibility and game availability vary by region and can change. Check Sony’s current service page for your account’s location.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
