It is not a reason to replace every Gigabit device: first find the slow segment, then upgrade only the links and equipment that can use the extra bandwidth. A faster LAN can help local devices communicate faster, but it does not raise the speed of your internet plan.
When does 10GbE make a real difference?
A 10GbE link has a nominal rate of 10 Gb/s—ten times the nominal rate of 1GbE. That is a link-rate comparison, not a promise that an application or file transfer will run ten times faster. The devices, storage, software and every link along the route must be able to keep up.
Good candidates for an upgrade
- Moving large files between a workstation and a NAS, especially when the current wired link is the limiting factor.
- Editing large video files stored on a NAS, where repeated reads and writes put sustained demand on the local network.
- Serving several wired workstations, servers or storage devices at once, or aggregating traffic between network segments.
These are plausible benefits, not guaranteed performance gains. Storage speed, CPU load, protocol overhead and the number of simultaneous transfers can all limit actual throughput. TP-Link describes NAS transfers, editing large video files over a NAS and multi-device wired use as multi-gigabit use cases: TP-Link’s multi-gig network explainer.
When Gigabit is probably enough
Routine browsing and streaming usually do not justify replacing a working Gigabit LAN by themselves. If you do not have a workload that saturates a local link, faster ports may add cost and complexity without a noticeable benefit.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Will upgrading the LAN make your internet faster?
Not by itself. A 10GbE switch can speed up local traffic—for example, a workstation accessing a NAS—while your internet service remains unchanged. For faster internet access, the service plan and the complete path from the ISP connection through the modem or router, switches and client must support the target rate. A faster switch cannot remove a slower link elsewhere in that path.
Find the bottleneck before buying
- Describe what is slow. Separate internet downloads from NAS transfers, backups, media editing and traffic shared by several wired devices.
- Map the route between the endpoints. Check the network ports and links on both devices and every intervening switch or router. A 10GbE network card connected through a 1GbE switch still has a 1GbE segment in its path.
- Check the workload as well as the network. A fast link cannot make slow storage, a busy CPU or an application that cannot use the available bandwidth run faster.
- Upgrade the segment that is actually constrained. That may mean adding a 10GbE PCIe network card to a desktop, replacing a switch, or upgrading only a direct workstation-to-NAS path. A PCIe card needs a suitable slot and operating-system support; confirm both before choosing hardware. See TP-Link’s overview of adding a PCIe NIC and multi-gig switch ports.
10GBASE-T copper or SFP+?
Choose the connection type that fits the ports on your devices, the cable route and the equipment you can use—not a label alone. Copper 10GBASE-T uses RJ45 Ethernet ports. SFP+ uses compatible ports and a suitable direct-attach cable or optical setup; module support depends on the specific equipment.

| Consideration | 10GBASE-T copper | SFP+ |
|---|---|---|
| Ports | Suitable when both ends have 10GBASE-T RJ45 ports, or compatible equipment is available. | Suitable when both ends have compatible SFP+ ports and the chosen connection method is supported. |
| Cabling and run | Uses balanced twisted-pair Ethernet cabling. Check the cable category, installed quality and device guidance for the actual run. | Uses a compatible DAC or optical link; the appropriate option depends on equipment and the route. |
| Compatibility | Check that each port supports 10GBASE-T; a 1GbE RJ45 port is not a 10GbE port. | Check the device manufacturer’s compatibility guidance before buying third-party SFP+ modules. |
| Cost and trade-offs | Compare current local prices for the required NICs, switch ports and cabling. | Compare current local prices for compatible ports, DACs or optical components. No universal cost advantage applies. |
IEEE’s 802.3an-2006 amendment specifies 10GBASE-T for up to 100 m of balanced twisted-pair structured cabling: IEEE 802.3-2022 standards page. That is the standard’s reach statement, not a guarantee that every installed cable will reliably deliver 10GbE across that distance.
Will your existing Ethernet cable work for 10GbE?
Possibly, but do not assume that a cable category printed on a jacket guarantees the result. The standard’s reach, manufacturer recommendations and the condition and installation of a particular run are different things.

- For a new copper run: Cat6a is the conservative choice for full-distance 10GbE cabling.
- For existing Cat6: some vendor guidance supports shorter 10GbE runs. NETGEAR says Cat6 can support its copper solution up to 45 m, and its XS728T guidance recommends Cat6a or Cat7 when the distance is greater than 45 m. Those are vendor and model-specific recommendations, not a universal guarantee: NETGEAR’s 10GbE category page and XS728T support page.
- For Cat5e: do not assume it will support 10GbE at the distance or reliability you need. If replacing a run is impractical, check whether the endpoints support 2.5GbE or 5GbE instead.
- For any installed run: check the exact equipment guidance and qualify the run rather than relying on the category label alone.
Would 2.5GbE or 5GbE be enough?
For some upgrades, yes. IEEE 802.3bz defines 2.5GbE and 5GbE operation over Cat5e and higher, according to NETGEAR’s support guidance. The actual device and installed cable still need to support the chosen link. Multi-gig can be a proportionate step when the workload exceeds Gigabit but does not need 10GbE, or when keeping suitable existing cable matters more than reaching the highest link rate.
| Option | Consider it when | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Keep 1GbE | Your current links meet your real workload and you cannot identify a local-network bottleneck. | Confirm that the slowdown is not caused by the internet connection, storage or another part of the system. |
| Move to 2.5GbE or 5GbE | You need more than Gigabit for a particular endpoint or shared traffic, but not necessarily 10GbE. | Verify the endpoint ports, switch support and cable installation; vendor guidance describes these rates over Cat5e and higher. |
| Move selected links to 10GbE | Large local transfers, NAS work or aggregation make a faster link worthwhile. | Verify support end to end, including ports, cable, switch, NIC, workload and any SFP+ compatibility. |
A selective upgrade is often the sensible one
You do not need to replace every Gigabit device to benefit from faster networking. Start with the busiest link or the one connecting the devices that move the most data. Keep other devices on Gigabit unless they have a demonstrated need for more bandwidth. A targeted change—such as a multi-gig or 10GbE connection between a workstation and NAS—can address the bottleneck without rebuilding the entire home network.
