Yes, but only in a specific, carefully secured configuration. A compatible router running OpenWrt can host an external USB software-defined radio (SDR) receiver, such as an RTL-SDR, and make that receiver available to another computer over the network. The router is acting as a small Linux host and network interface; its built-in Wi-Fi chipset does not automatically become a general-purpose SDR.

Safety depends on exact hardware and firmware compatibility, correct installation, restricted access to the SDR service, and normal router security. A documented example uses OpenWrt 21.02.1 on a Comtrend AR-5387un and is explicitly experimental, so it demonstrates a configuration pattern rather than proving that current firmware or every router model will work.

What “running SDR on a router” actually means

In the practical setup covered here, you plug a USB RTL-SDR receiver into a router that runs OpenWrt. Router-side software, commonly rtl_tcp, controls the receiver. SDR software on a desktop or laptop then connects to the router across your local network and uses the streamed radio samples.

This arrangement can be useful when the router and antenna need to sit somewhere else: near an outdoor antenna, in an attic, or at a location where a full computer would be inconvenient. The client computer performs the heavier signal-processing work while the router provides power, a network connection, and a small Linux environment for the receiver.

It does not mean that the router’s normal 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi radio has become an unrestricted SDR. Those radios, their drivers, and their firmware are designed for the router’s networking functions. Turning a consumer router into a programmable SDR Wi-Fi transceiver is a different development project requiring specifically supported SDR and FPGA hardware.

What determines whether the setup is safe

There are two separate questions: can the hardware work, and can it be operated without creating avoidable security or radio problems?

Technical compatibility

  • The exact router model and hardware revision must support an OpenWrt build that can be installed safely.
  • The router needs usable USB connectivity and sufficient resources for the receiver and network workload.
  • The required router packages must exist for that model’s OpenWrt release. The documented procedure installs the rtl-sdr package and relies on its librtlsdr dependency.
  • The client computer must be able to reach the router over the network, and its SDR application must support connecting to an rtl_tcp server.

Security and operational safety

  • Use a strong administrator password and do not leave the router’s management interface protected only by default credentials.
  • Run a supported OpenWrt release and apply security updates. OpenWrt distinguishes active support, security-maintenance periods, and end-of-life; an end-of-life device no longer receives fixes, including for severe vulnerabilities.
  • Keep the SDR service reachable only from trusted clients. Do not forward its listening port to the public internet or expose it to an untrusted network.
  • Understand the difference between receiving and transmitting. A receive-only RTL-SDR setup does not authorize transmission, and a router’s Wi-Fi radio is not automatically licensed for arbitrary SDR use.

Hardware and software checklist

Item What you need Important limitation
Router A model with an appropriate OpenWrt image, USB support, and enough resources for the intended workload Compatibility is model- and hardware-revision-specific; it is not a universal router feature.
Firmware An OpenWrt release supported for that exact device The example uses OpenWrt 21.02.1, an older release. Do not treat that version as a current recommendation for another model.
Receiver A compatible USB RTL-SDR (or another receiver supported by the available packages) The dongle alone is not a complete system; it also needs a compatible router, software and network path.
Router software rtl-sdr, including the librtlsdr dependency, and the rtl_tcp service Package availability depends on the OpenWrt target and release.
Client computer SDR software configured to connect to the router’s address and SDR service The client performs the user-facing demodulation and analysis.
Network A reliable path between the client and router Latency, bandwidth and isolation depend on your local network design.

Check compatibility before changing firmware

Do this investigation before plugging in the receiver or flashing anything. A firmware mistake can make a router unusable, and the tutorial documenting this arrangement warns that changing firmware can damage the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact device. Record the model number and hardware revision printed on the label or in the current administration interface. Similar names can represent different hardware targets.
  2. Find the matching OpenWrt device information. Verify that an image exists for that exact revision, read the installation method, and check whether the release is still supported.
  3. Confirm USB and storage constraints. Make sure the router has a usable USB port and enough available space and resources for the package set. If the device cannot run the required packages, stop rather than forcing an incompatible image.
  4. Plan recovery first. Read the vendor- and OpenWrt-specific recovery procedure, identify how you would reinstall working firmware, and retain the original firmware information. Do not begin a flash without a recovery path.
  5. Check package availability. Confirm that the target release provides rtl-sdr and its librtlsdr dependency for your architecture. Package names and availability are not guaranteed across releases.
  6. Decide where the router belongs on your network. If the receiver is installed outdoors or in another exposed location, design management access and segmentation before deployment.

How the documented USB receiver pattern works

The historical tutorial uses OpenWrt 21.02.1 on a Comtrend AR-5387un. It installs the router-side RTL-SDR software, connects a USB RTL-SDR stick, starts rtl_tcp, and configures SDR software on another computer to use the router as the receiver interface. Its example startup command is:

rtl_tcp -a 192.168.1.1

Here, 192.168.1.1 is the router address used in that example. Your router may use a different address, and the service’s listening behavior must be checked for the version and package you install. Treat the tutorial as evidence that this architecture can work on that device and release, not as a current, universal recipe.

Once the service is running, the client SDR application is pointed at the router rather than at a locally attached receiver. The router forwards the receiver’s data over the network; it does not replace the client application’s signal-processing functions.

Secure the router and SDR service

Protect administration

Change the administrator password immediately after installation and use a long, unique credential. Limit management access to the network or devices that actually need it. A router that hosts extra software has a larger attack surface than a device running only its factory services, so its management interface deserves the same care as a small server.

Keep firmware in support

OpenWrt’s lifecycle matters more than the age printed on the router box. Active support can include normal fixes; security-maintenance periods focus on vulnerabilities; end-of-life releases stop receiving updates. If your device is already at end of life, adding an SDR service does not make it safer. Replace the platform or choose a supported target instead of treating an unpatched router as a permanent appliance.

Restrict the SDR listener

An rtl_tcp endpoint should be available only to trusted clients on the network segment where you intend to use it. Do not publish the listening port through port forwarding, place it directly on an untrusted guest network, or assume that an obscure port is protection. If remote access is genuinely required, use a controlled private network path and keep the router’s administration plane separate from the receiver service.

Consider segmentation

The tutorial’s author proposed isolating an SDR router from the rest of a home network for an outdoor installation. That is an example precaution, not a universal topology. The right boundary depends on whether the router is connected to your primary LAN, a dedicated management network, or a location where physical access is possible. At minimum, separate untrusted clients from both the router’s management interface and the SDR service.

Firmware flashing is the highest-risk step

Installing an SDR package is usually reversible; flashing the wrong firmware image may not be. Before changing firmware:

  • Match the image to the exact model and hardware revision, not merely a similar product name.
  • Use the documented installation method for that target and verify downloaded files as instructed by the platform documentation.
  • Keep power stable throughout the flash and do not interrupt the process.
  • Know whether recovery requires a reset button, a bootloader procedure, a serial connection or another device-specific method.
  • Do not perform the first flash on a router that is your only connection to the internet or your only path to other critical equipment.

If the router becomes unreachable, stop repeated power cycling and follow the device-specific recovery procedure. The exact recovery path varies by model; the experimental tutorial does not establish a universal rescue method.

Receiving is not transmitting

The USB RTL-SDR example is a receiving setup. It captures radio signals and sends samples to software; it does not provide a general transmit chain. You should not infer transmit capability from the presence of a USB port, an OpenWrt installation, or the router’s built-in Wi-Fi radio.

Transmission introduces additional technical and legal obligations. Frequency, power, emissions, antenna, location and purpose all matter, and the rules differ by jurisdiction. The sources here do not determine what is permitted in your country or for a particular band. Before transmitting, consult your regulator’s rules and use equipment designed and configured for lawful operation.

“It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to follow your LOCAL SPECTRUM REGULATION or use CABLE to avoid potential interference over the air.”

That warning appears in the openwifi project README. openwifi is a separate SDR-based Wi-Fi development platform with specifically supported FPGA and SDR boards. Its requirements and regulatory responsibilities should not be confused with hosting a receive-only USB dongle on an ordinary router.

Choose the approach that matches your goal

Approach Best fit What it involves Principal limitation
USB SDR hosted by an OpenWrt router Placing a receiver near an antenna and accessing it from another computer Compatible router, USB RTL-SDR, router-side rtl-sdr/rtl_tcp, and a trusted network path Support is model-specific; the documented example is older and experimental.
SDR-based Wi-Fi development platform Researchers or developers building programmable Wi-Fi systems A board supported by openwifi, its FPGA/SDR toolchain, and careful spectrum compliance It is not a package you can assume will run on any consumer router.

Troubleshooting without weakening security

The router cannot see the dongle

Recheck USB power, the exact receiver type, package architecture and whether the required driver and librtlsdr dependency installed successfully. Test locally on the router before changing firewall rules or exposing the service.

The client cannot connect to rtl_tcp

Confirm the router’s actual LAN address, that rtl_tcp is running, and that the client is on an allowed network. A connection failure is not a reason to open the service to the internet. Check segmentation and firewall policy while keeping administration restricted.

The stream is unstable

Check the physical USB connection, router power, network reliability and competing router workloads. The router is a small embedded host; running additional services can exceed its practical resources even when the package installs correctly.

A firmware upgrade breaks the setup

Do not assume that an upgrade preserves package compatibility. Recheck the target architecture, package repository and release support status, and keep a tested recovery procedure. A newer release can change availability even when the router model is unchanged.

Practical decision rule

Use this architecture when you have a verified OpenWrt target, a supported USB receiver, a clear recovery plan and a local network you can secure. It is a reasonable way to put a receive-only SDR near an antenna. Avoid it when the router has no supported firmware, is end of life, cannot be recovered after a failed flash, or would require exposing the SDR service to untrusted networks. For programmable Wi-Fi transmission or research, use a platform explicitly designed and supported for that work and follow the spectrum rules that apply where you operate.
