Usually, you can keep using an unsupported phone for a while, but it is less safe than a phone that still receives security updates. The phone does not stop working when updates end; rather, newly discovered vulnerabilities may go unfixed. Risk varies by device and how you use it, and there is no reliable universal percentage for an individual user’s chance of being compromised. If your phone is confirmed unsupported, plan to replace it. Until then, reduce exposure, knowing that precautions cannot provide the missing patches.
What changes when phone updates stop?
Security updates fix vulnerabilities as manufacturers address them. Once support ends for a particular phone and software combination, later-discovered flaws may remain unpatched. That increases exposure; it does not mean the phone is automatically compromised or that every user faces the same risk. The UK National Cyber Security Centre explains the risks of continuing to use obsolete products in its guidance on obsolete products.
For example, Apple warns that malicious web content targeting out-of-date iOS could put iPhone data at risk if someone follows a malicious link or visits a compromised website. Apple calls keeping software current the single most important thing users can do to maintain the security of Apple products. Its guidance also describes updates released in 2026 for some older iOS versions, so an older phone may still receive a patch; age alone does not prove support has ended. Check whether your exact phone is still supported
Do not rely only on the phone’s age, operating-system name, or a general statement about the brand. Support can differ by model, software version, carrier variant, and region. Check the manufacturer’s support or security-update information for your exact model, then install every official system and security update offered for it.

- Open the phone’s system update screen and check for available updates. Install any official update offered, then check again if the device prompts you to do so.
- Look up the exact model on the manufacturer’s support or security-update page. Confirm whether it still receives security fixes and whether its published support commitment applies to your region or variant.
- If support continues, install security patches promptly and enable automatic updates where available.
- If the manufacturer no longer supports the model, treat it as unsupported even if the phone still works and some apps continue to update.
How to reduce risk while you still use an unsupported phone
These steps can lower exposure, but they do not replace operating-system security patches. The NCSC says continued use of an obsolete product cannot be made risk-free; its guidance is written for organizations and covers more than phones, rather than setting a phone-specific consumer rule.
- Avoid suspicious links, unexpected attachments, and websites you do not trust.
- Install updates for apps and browsers that remain available, and avoid apps from untrusted sources.
- Consider limiting sensitive activity on the device while it lacks system security support.
- If you use the phone for work or to access organizational systems, follow your organization’s security policy. CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance is aimed at organizations, not a general consumer mandate.
Do not treat rooting or unofficial firmware as a routine way to restore support. Whether a particular alternative operating system is suitable, maintained, and safe depends on the device and cannot be assumed.

When to replace the phone—and what to look for
Replacing an unsupported phone with a model that has a clear, continuing security-update commitment is the durable fix. CISA’s Mobile Communications Best Practice Guidance, dated December 18, 2024, recommends prioritizing models with regular security updates—at least monthly—and a promise of at least five years of security updates. That is CISA guidance, not a legal requirement or a guarantee that a phone is otherwise secure. Verify the current commitment for the exact model and region before buying.

- Support duration: Is the manufacturer’s security-update commitment explicit, and how long does it apply to this model?
- Update cadence: Does the manufacturer commit to regular security patches?
- Device security: Does the phone include hardware-level security features, including protection for cryptographic keys?
- Practical fit: Check the price, carrier compatibility, app requirements, and expected useful life alongside security support.
