Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The answer depends on your destination country and the exact regional variant. Check the rules and support for that specific device before paying.
What “safe to import” actually depends on
There are four separate checks. Passing one does not automatically pass the others:

- Telecom approval: Your country may require an approval, registration, or other procedure before you use an imported handset—even if it is for personal use.
- Customs: Import permission, quantity limits, declarations, duties, and taxes are customs questions, separate from telecom approval.
- Carrier compatibility: “Unlocked” only means the phone is not restricted to one carrier. It does not establish that its regional variant supports your carrier’s bands and services.
- After-sales support: Warranty, repairs, and returns depend on the product and the seller’s written terms. Do not assume a local service centre will cover an imported variant.
What country-specific rules can look like
These official examples illustrate why there is no universal answer. They apply only to the named jurisdictions, and rules can change.
| Destination | What the official guidance says | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Brazil | Anatel describes a personal-use approval route for certain equipment imported without Anatel marking. The process may require foreign certification for evaluation; approval is tied to the individual unit identified by serial number and is not for commercial resale or providing telecom services. Anatel says the consumer remains responsible for problems or incompatibilities and strongly recommends checking for an existing homologation before buying abroad. Anatel import guidance and Anatel personal-use declaration. | Whether the exact model is already homologated and whether the personal-use procedure applies to your unit before use. |
| India | The Department of Telecommunications describes Equipment Type Approval (ETA) for wireless devices, including mobile handsets and smartphones. It allows self-declaration for specified finished products operating in permitted bands. Department of Telecommunications ETA guidance. | Whether the specific handset and import route qualify under the current procedure. |
| Egypt | The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority describes type approval as compulsory for importing communications equipment. A separate notice says the exceptional exemption for a passenger’s imported phone ended at noon on January 21, 2026, while listing exceptions for Egyptians living abroad and tourists for 90 days. NTRA type-approval guidance and NTRA notice on the passenger exemption. | The current rule and whether a stated exception applies to you; these details are specific to Egypt and time-sensitive. |
| Israel | The Ministry of Communications says its stated personal-import exemption covers up to five cellular terminal devices without its approval. Ministry of Communications exemption information. | Whether the exemption remains current and whether separate customs requirements apply. |
| Taiwan | Taipei Customs says certain radio-frequency terminal devices, including phones, may be brought in for personal use without a permit up to its stated quantity. Its guidance separately addresses baggage-value taxation and declaration conditions. Taipei Customs guidance. | The current quantity allowance and the separate customs declaration and tax rules for your circumstances. |
These examples are not a survey of every country. Do not apply another country’s personal-import allowance to your own destination.

How to check a specific phone before ordering
- Find the exact model number and regional variant. A marketing name can cover multiple versions with different radios or regulatory status. Ask the seller for the model identifier and confirm it against the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Check your telecom regulator’s current personal-import rules. Look for requirements for importing and using a personally imported handset, including approval or registration before use. If the rules are unclear, ask the regulator whether that exact model and import route are covered.
- Check the customs authority’s rules separately. Confirm whether you need a permit, declaration, or payment of duties or taxes, and whether quantity or traveler allowances apply to your situation.
- Compare the variant with your carrier’s current compatibility information. Check supported bands and services for the exact model, not merely the brand or the word “unlocked.” Anatel notes that countries may use different frequency criteria; no particular handset-and-carrier combination is established by the examples above.
- Read the written warranty, repair, and return terms. Confirm which country and variant are covered, who handles repairs, and what happens if the phone is incompatible or cannot be approved for use.
- Keep the paperwork. Save the invoice, model and serial information, and any regulatory documents in case customs, the regulator, or your carrier requests them.
When importing is a poor bet
Pause before buying if you cannot identify the exact variant, cannot confirm whether it may be used in your country, or cannot verify support from your carrier and the seller. A lower purchase price is not a reliable saving if approval, customs charges, network limitations, or an uncovered repair make the phone unusable or costly to keep.
