In the current Radisson and Expedia examples, ChatGPT helps with discovery and comparison, then sends you to the provider’s website to make the booking. Treat the provider’s final checkout page—not the chat—as the authoritative place to verify the merchant, room, dates, total, payment timing, and cancellation rules.
ChatGPT is not a universal booking desk. OpenAI says it does not save, display, modify, or cancel existing reservations. After you pay, the confirmation email and the named booking provider control what happens next.

What “booking through ChatGPT” currently means
The phrase can describe two separate actions:
- Discovery: asking ChatGPT to find hotels, compare prices, show amenities, or suggest locations.
- Transaction: entering traveler and payment details on the hotel’s or travel provider’s checkout page.
Those actions may occur in different places. OpenAI’s October 7, 2026 Radisson case study describes a ChatGPT experience that displays hotels on a map, compares prices and amenities, and then continues to Radisson’s website for booking. Expedia’s current product page likewise tells travelers to click Book on Expedia and complete the reservation on Expedia. The chat result itself is therefore not proof that a reservation exists.
OpenAI’s general help guidance says ChatGPT does not save, display, modify, or cancel existing reservations. Once you leave the conversation, the provider named in your confirmation is the party that can normally retrieve or service the booking.

For context, Expedia’s April 4, 2023 announcement described an earlier beta trip-planning experience in its iOS app and an earlier ChatGPT plugin. That announcement is historical; it does not establish that every feature from that period is still available.

Is the payment itself safe?
There is no single “ChatGPT hotel payment” method. The merchant, payment processor, charge timing, currency, authentication step, and refund process are determined by the provider’s checkout flow and by the specific room rate. The available product descriptions do not establish one processor or one card-handling practice for every hotel experience surfaced in ChatGPT.

Checks to make on the final checkout page
- Identify the merchant. Confirm whether the page belongs to the hotel, an online travel agency, or another named provider. The company shown on the payment page should match the party you expect to support the reservation.
- Recheck the reservation. Verify the property address, check-in and check-out dates, room category, bed type, occupancy, guest names, and inclusions such as breakfast or resort fees.
- Reconcile the total. Look for taxes, service charges, destination fees, currency conversion, and any deposit. The amount displayed immediately before confirmation is the amount to use for your decision.
- Read when money is due. A rate may require payment now, a deposit, or payment at the property. Note which company will charge you and the date or condition that triggers the charge.
- Check the page address and connection. Use the provider’s expected domain, a secure HTTPS connection, and the provider’s own support information. Do not enter card details into a form reached through an unexpected redirect or a message asking you to pay outside the checkout flow.
- Save evidence. Download or screenshot the final price, terms, and confirmation number, and keep the confirmation email until after the stay and any refund are complete.
These steps reduce the risk of paying the wrong merchant or misunderstanding a rate. They cannot turn a nonrefundable rate into a refundable one, and they do not create protections that the provider’s terms do not offer.
How the current hotel flows differ
| Example | What happens in ChatGPT | Where the reservation is completed | What the cited source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radisson | Hotel suggestions appear on a map with price and amenity comparisons. | Radisson’s website. | OpenAI’s case study describes the handoff; it does not promise a universal payment or cancellation policy. |
| Expedia | Travelers explore and plan, then select Book on Expedia. | Expedia. | Expedia’s product page says booking happens on Expedia and remains subject to the selected provider’s terms. |
Neither example means every hotel shown in every ChatGPT conversation uses the same integration. Availability can depend on the product experience, market, property, and date. Follow the destination of the actual link you select.
What to compare before choosing a rate
Compare the exact offer, not just the hotel name or the provider brand. A single property can sell several rates with different payment and cancellation conditions.

Expedia’s terms of service state that a booking is subject to the selected travel provider’s rules, including payment due, cancellation, refundability, availability, and restrictions. They also note that some properties do not permit changes or cancellations after booking. That condition belongs to the particular property and rate; it should not be generalized to every Expedia reservation or every hotel found in ChatGPT.

What happens after you click “confirm”
A completed booking should produce a provider-issued confirmation, normally with a reservation number, property details, dates, guest information, price, and support instructions. A chat message that says a hotel is available, a button that opens a provider page, or a payment authorization screen without a confirmation number is not enough to assume the reservation is finished.
If no confirmation arrives
- Check the provider account, email inbox, spam folder, and payment notification.
- Do not immediately submit a second booking; first determine whether the first attempt created a pending or completed reservation.
- Contact the provider shown on the checkout page or payment record, quoting the transaction time and any reference number.
- Ask whether the charge is an authorization, a completed payment, or a failed attempt, and request written confirmation of the reservation status.
ChatGPT cannot be relied on to retrieve a booking that the provider cannot find.
Can ChatGPT change or cancel a hotel booking?
Not according to OpenAI’s current help guidance: ChatGPT does not save, display, modify, or cancel existing reservations. Use the confirmation email, the provider’s account portal, or the provider’s support channel instead.
Use the right support party
- Hotel checkout: start with the hotel named on the confirmation.
- Travel-provider checkout: start with that provider’s support team, while checking the applicable travel-provider terms.
- Unclear merchant: match the merchant descriptor on your card statement and the domain in the confirmation to identify who took the booking.
Have the confirmation number, lead guest name, dates, and requested change ready. A provider may be unable to change a nonrefundable or restricted rate even when the hotel has rooms available. Availability for a new room does not override the terms attached to the original reservation.

Cancellation and refund pitfalls
“Free cancellation” has a deadline
Free cancellation generally applies only until the date and time written in the rate rules. Check the stated time zone and whether the deadline is based on the property’s local time. Save the policy as it appeared when you booked in case the confirmation later displays a shorter summary.
Nonrefundable does not mean “no support”
A nonrefundable rate can still have a support process, but support does not guarantee a refund. Ask the provider whether a date change, credit, waiver, or exception is available; obtain the answer in writing before assuming money will be returned.
Refund timing is separate from approval
Once a provider approves a refund, the posting time can depend on the provider, payment method, and card issuer. Keep the refund reference and compare the amount with the original charge.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Watch for off-platform payment requests
If someone asks you to pay by bank transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or a link unrelated to the provider’s checkout, stop and verify through the contact details in the original confirmation. A request received in a chat or email is not evidence that it came from the hotel.

How to use ChatGPT more safely for hotel planning
- Ask for constraints, not a booking guarantee. State destination, dates, occupancy, budget, accessibility needs, and required amenities. Treat the results as candidates to verify.
- Open the provider destination yourself. Before entering personal or payment information, confirm the domain and merchant identity.
- Compare the same room and terms. A lower headline price may omit taxes, impose a stricter cancellation deadline, or require prepayment.
- Read every expandable policy section. Pay attention to deposit rules, incidental holds, resort or city taxes, and age or identification requirements.
- Complete payment only when the final total is stable. If dates, guests, currency, or room type change during checkout, restart your review.
- Store the confirmation outside the chat. Keep the email, invoice, policy, and support contact until the stay is over.
- Use the provider for all post-booking actions. Do not assume a later ChatGPT conversation can see your reservation or cancel it.
What the Radisson performance figures do—and do not—prove
OpenAI’s October 7, 2026 Radisson case study reports that, during July and August 2026, the experience produced approximately 1.5 times Radisson’s organic-search visit-to-booking conversion. It also attributes 54% of recorded checkout and booking events to ad views and says the plugin took six weeks to build and launch.
Those are company-reported product-performance figures, not independent tests of payment security, fraud rates, refund reliability, or cancellation outcomes. They show how travelers interacted with that particular experience; they do not establish that booking through ChatGPT is safer than booking directly or through another provider.
Questions travelers commonly ask
Does seeing a hotel in ChatGPT mean it is available?
No. Availability and price must be confirmed on the provider’s current checkout page for your dates and occupancy.
Who is responsible if the room details are wrong?
The named booking provider is the first contact. Use the confirmation to identify whether that is the hotel or a travel intermediary, then request a correction before arrival.
Can I rely on a ChatGPT conversation as a receipt?
No. Keep the provider’s confirmation, invoice, and policy instead. ChatGPT’s conversation is not a substitute for a reservation number or payment record.
Is a direct hotel booking always better?
Not automatically. Compare merchant support, total price, payment timing, and the exact change and cancellation terms for the rate you would actually buy.
Bottom line
Using ChatGPT to research hotels can be reasonable when you treat it as a discovery tool and finish on the identified provider’s secure checkout page. Before paying, verify who takes the money, the complete reservation details, the total, charge timing, and the exact rate rules. After paying, rely on the provider’s confirmation and support—not ChatGPT—for changes, cancellations, and refunds.
