To know whether an overseas iPhone is cheaper, compare the identical model and storage after checkout tax, currency conversion, refund fees, import charges, travel or shipping costs, and the possible cost of warranty service. A dated 41-country comparison found the United States cheapest for an iPhone 18 Pro 256 GB, but the saving can disappear when tax, customs, SIM differences, or a dedicated trip are included.
What the latest price comparison actually shows
Ulrich Rozier’s Pippin comparison collected official Apple Store prices in 41 countries on September 11, 2026 and converted currencies using the European Central Bank rate snapshot from October 12, 2026. It compared three iPhone models. For the iPhone 18 Pro with 256 GB of storage, the reported United States price was $1,295 including estimated sales tax, or about €1,158. Türkiye was listed at ₺137,999, about €2,502, while France was €1,479 with tax included.

| Market | iPhone 18 Pro, 256 GB | Tax treatment in the comparison | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $1,295 (about €1,158) | Estimated sales tax included in the reported figure; listed US prices generally start before sales tax | Final amount varies by state and local jurisdiction |
| France | €1,479 | Local tax included | Converted ranking changes when exchange rates move |
| Türkiye | ₺137,999 (about €2,502) | Local tax included | Most expensive market in this comparison |
Pippin reported a 116% spread between the United States and Türkiye for that configuration. This is a snapshot, not a guaranteed checkout quote: the United States number uses estimated tax, exchange rates change, and Apple can change prices. Check the exact country store and your card’s exchange rate on the day you buy.

Do not compare a United States base price with a tax-included European price, or a 256 GB phone with a 512 GB phone. Match storage, model number, condition, included accessories, and regional hardware before deciding that one country is cheaper.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
How to calculate the real cost
Use the following calculation separately for buying at home and buying abroad. The cheaper headline price is irrelevant if it is not the cheaper delivered, usable phone.
- Identify the exact variant. Record the model name, storage capacity, model number, SIM configuration, and whether the phone is new, refurbished, or used. Regional versions can differ even when their marketing name is identical.
- Start with the local selling price. Use an Apple Store or authorized seller in each market. Confirm whether the displayed amount already includes VAT, GST, or sales tax.
- Add checkout tax. In the United States, sales tax is normally added at checkout and depends on the state, county, and city. A foreign visitor does not automatically avoid it.
- Convert using the rate you will actually receive. A card network or bank may use a different rate from a web converter and may add a foreign-transaction fee. Cash exchange can include a spread as well.
- Subtract only a refund you can really claim. A tourist VAT or GST refund requires the right traveler status, purchase documents, export procedure, departure route, and timing. Deduct processing fees from the refund.
- Add the cost of bringing the phone home. Check your destination’s personal allowance, declaration threshold, VAT or GST, customs duty, and any broker or carrier charge. Carrying a phone yourself and shipping it are different customs situations.
- Include incremental travel costs. If you fly solely to purchase the phone, allocate the additional airfare, accommodation, local transport, and payment fees to the purchase. If you were already traveling, only the incremental cost may be close to zero.
- Price the service risk. A repair that requires returning to the selling country can cost more in shipping, time, and inconvenience than the original saving.
A useful formula is: foreign total = local sticker price + checkout tax + conversion and card fees − collectible tax refund + import charges + incremental travel or shipping cost + expected service cost. Compare that result with the all-in home-market price, including local consumer protections.
Taxes, refunds, and customs can erase the difference
Sales tax at the point of purchase
United States prices need special care because Apple’s displayed price may be before state and local sales tax. TechRadar’s September 11, 2026 example gives Oregon at 0% and Louisiana at 10%. On a $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro, the article estimated a high-end total of $1,318 after tax. Those are examples, not a nationwide rate: the store location determines the amount.

Many other Apple country stores display tax-inclusive prices. That makes a European price look higher than a United States pre-tax price even before currency conversion. Put both figures on the same tax basis before comparing them.

Tourist VAT or GST refunds
A refund is conditional, not an automatic discount. The traveler, the retailer, the item, the export deadline, the airport or border route, and the paperwork must satisfy that country’s rules. Customs may need to see the item and the original invoice. Refund companies can also retain a processing fee. If any requirement fails, use the price without a refund in your calculation.
Returning with the phone: a United States-to-United Kingdom example
TechRadar’s route-specific example says the United Kingdom has no customs duty on iPhones bought for personal use, but a phone worth more than £390 must be declared when entering the UK. It also reports that a parcel shipped from the United States to the UK is subject to 20% VAT.
| Situation | Reported rule or figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Entering the UK with a personally carried phone | Declare a phone worth more than £390 | Do not assume the personal allowance covers a high-value iPhone |
| Personal-use iPhone in that UK example | No customs duty reported | VAT, declaration, and eligibility still matter |
| Shipping a phone from the US to the UK | 20% VAT reported | Carrier or broker charges can be added to the tax |
The UK figures apply to that route and date, not to every country or traveler. Before departure, check the destination customs authority for your nationality, residency, allowance, and whether the device is carried or shipped. Keep the receipt and be prepared to declare the phone when required.

The comparison identifies the United States iPhone 18 Pro as eSIM-only. Several other listed regional versions have both a nano-SIM tray and eSIM. This difference can matter more than a modest price saving.

Questions to answer before paying
- Does your home carrier support eSIM activation for this exact model?
- Can the carrier convert your existing physical SIM to eSIM, and can it do so while you are abroad?
- Will a future carrier or prepaid plan require a physical SIM?
- Does the model number support the radio bands and network features used by your home networks?
- Will the seller provide an unlocked device rather than one tied to a foreign carrier?
TechRadar’s UK example says a digital-only contract may work, while someone whose current or future plan depends on a physical SIM may need carrier-supported eSIM conversion or a different regional variant. Confirm compatibility with your carrier before purchase; the available comparison does not independently validate every band and carrier combination.
Warranty, repairs, and consumer rights
Apple’s limited-warranty wording, reproduced by TechRadar, states: “Apple may restrict warranty service for hardware products to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.” The word “may” matters: it permits a restriction but does not mean every foreign purchase will be refused locally. Ask Apple or an authorized service provider about the exact model and sales region before relying on local repair.
Service may involve shipping the phone back to the purchase country, losing access to it during transit, or paying for diagnosis and transport. Those practical costs belong in the comparison even when the nominal warranty period is the same.
Apple’s iPhone 16 Important Product Information Guide says warranty benefits are additional to rights under local consumer law and that consumers might have remedies against the seller for lack of conformity. Because that guide concerns iPhone 16, check the warranty documentation supplied with the current model and the law in the country where you buy. A purchase abroad can leave you pursuing the seller overseas rather than using the remedies available from a domestic retailer.

When buying abroad can make sense
You are already traveling
If the trip is already paid for, the incremental travel cost may be close to zero. A genuine price gap can then survive currency fees and import charges, provided the phone is compatible and you can comply with declaration rules.
The foreign variant solves a real need
A version with both a physical SIM and eSIM may be preferable to a cheaper eSIM-only version if your carrier or work line requires a removable SIM. Hardware fit is part of value, not an afterthought.
You have verified the service route
Buying abroad is more defensible when Apple or an authorized provider confirms that your model can be serviced where you live, or when you are comfortable returning it to the original market.

When buying at home is the better deal
- The overseas saving is small after sales tax, exchange fees, a realistic refund probability, and import charges.
- You would need a special flight, hotel, or shipping arrangement solely for the phone.
- Your carrier requires a physical SIM and the cheaper market sells an eSIM-only model.
- You depend on fast local repair, replacement, or a domestic seller’s consumer-law obligations.
- The foreign price is based on an estimated tax amount or an exchange rate that has already moved.
A dedicated trip is especially risky: airfare and handling can exceed the entire product-price difference. Do not count an uncertain tax refund as guaranteed savings.
Best Value
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
A practical decision checklist
- Write down the home price with all local taxes.
- Write down the foreign checkout price and the exact store location.
- Apply your card’s live exchange rate and fees, not a rounded online rate.
- Check whether a refund is legally available and subtract its processing charge.
- Ask the destination customs authority whether you must declare the phone and what tax or allowance applies.
- Confirm model number, SIM type, carrier support, unlocked status, and network compatibility.
- Ask about warranty service in your home country and retain the foreign invoice.
- Add incremental travel, shipping, broker, and possible return costs.
- Buy abroad only if the remaining saving is large enough to compensate for uncertainty and inconvenience.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing unlike prices
Mixing tax-included and pre-tax figures, or comparing different storage capacities, produces a false bargain. Use one configuration and one tax basis.
Assuming “duty-free” means tax-free
No customs duty does not necessarily remove VAT, GST, sales tax, declaration duties, or carrier fees. Each charge has a separate rule.
Ignoring the SIM tray
An eSIM-only phone can be unusable with a plan that requires a physical SIM. Verify activation before leaving the store.

Apple’s wording allows country-of-sale restrictions. Obtain a model-specific service answer instead of relying on a general assumption.
Using an old price or exchange rate
The cited comparison used September 11 prices and an October 12 exchange-rate snapshot in 2026. Recheck both immediately before purchase.
Verdict
Buying an iPhone abroad can be cheaper, especially when you are already traveling and the foreign market has a substantial tax-adjusted price advantage. The 2026 comparison found the United States cheapest for the iPhone 18 Pro 256 GB, with a reported 116% gap to Türkiye. That headline result is not a promise of savings for every buyer: checkout tax, customs, exchange rates, SIM configuration, warranty limits, and trip costs determine the real outcome. If the all-in difference is modest, buying at home usually delivers the simpler and safer value.
