Yes, home broadband can support a 24/7 YouTube live stream—but the plan’s advertised download speed alone cannot tell you whether it will. What matters is sustained upload capacity at the streaming computer, enough headroom above your chosen encoder bitrate, and a connection that stays available. Test the actual connection at the place and times you plan to stream, and check your provider’s current data and service terms. YouTube’s guidance helps assess the stream requirements; it does not establish that any Indian ISP, address, or plan will be reliable enough.
Which speed matters: upload or download?
For sending a live feed from your computer to YouTube, compare the encoder’s outgoing bitrate with your available upload capacity. A plan advertised as “100 Mbps” is not enough information unless you know whether that figure describes download or upload—and verify the actual upload performance at your streaming location. YouTube publishes recommended ingest bitrates by resolution, frame rate, and codec. These figures describe the video feed sent to YouTube—not a minimum broadband plan tier. The table below shows YouTube’s listed minimum and recommended encoder bitrates. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings page when configuring your stream, since platform recommendations can change.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the stream bitrate. For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream using the recommended 14 Mbps bitrate implies 16.8 Mbps of available upload capacity for the stream (14 × 1.2), before allowing for other upload activity. That is a planning calculation from YouTube’s headroom guidance, not a separate platform specification or a guarantee of uninterrupted service. So, is 100 Mbps broadband enough? It may be, if that figure reflects sufficient sustained upload at your address and the connection remains stable under real operating conditions. The download headline by itself does not answer the question, and a speed test cannot promise 24/7 continuity.

How to check your broadband before streaming continuously
- Choose the stream settings. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder bitrate using YouTube’s current live encoder settings. Compare the bitrate with the actual upload capacity you need, not the plan’s download figure.
- Check your plan’s upload terms. Look for the stated upload rate separately from download, then confirm the current provider terms for your address. Ask about any data cap, fair-use policy, continuous-upload limitation, service availability, and support arrangements; these vary by plan and provider.
- Connect the streaming computer by Ethernet where practical. YouTube recommends an Ethernet connection for computer streaming. A wired connection can reduce wireless variability, but it cannot compensate for inadequate upstream service or prevent an ISP outage. - Test upload capacity repeatedly. Run upload speed tests at the encoder’s location, including at the times of day the continuous stream will run. Pause competing uploads where possible and account for other people and devices sharing the connection. - Run an unlisted test stream. Start a test with the intended settings and content. Check stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room, and monitor the encoder for errors or dropped frames. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Exercise recovery and recording procedures. If you use a backup encoder or failover setup, test the rollover rather than assuming it works. Verify that any local archive is actually growing, and decide how you will monitor the stream and respond to a failure. Can home Wi-Fi keep a live stream running all day?
It can work, but YouTube recommends Ethernet for streaming from a computer. Wi-Fi adds another variable: wireless interference, distance from the router, and activity on the local network can affect the connection. Test using the same setup and location you intend to use. If you must use Wi-Fi, a successful test is useful evidence for that moment, not proof of uninterrupted service for every hour of the day.

As YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A speed test is a snapshot, not an uptime guarantee. A 24/7 operation also depends on factors beyond broadband speed, including local power, modem and router stability, ISP outages, encoder crashes, and whether monitoring or restart procedures work. YouTube’s documentation supports pre-testing, monitoring, and failover checks; it does not establish an Indian residential uptime guarantee or a complete operating standard for continuous broadcasting. How much data does streaming 24/7 use?
There is no single daily data figure: the result depends on the bitrate and stream duration. For a constant bitrate, you can estimate raw video transfer as bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8, giving megabytes; divide by 1,000 for an approximate decimal gigabyte figure. For example, at 14 Mbps for 24 hours, the calculation is 14 × 86,400 ÷ 8 = 151,200 MB, or about 151.2 GB. This is a mathematical estimate, not a YouTube-published usage statistic. Actual traffic can differ because of audio, protocol overhead, and encoding behavior. Check your provider’s current plan terms for any allowance or fair-use limits that apply to continuous uploads.
