GTA Online is not universally free to start. You need access through Grand Theft Auto V or a separately sold GTA Online edition, and console online play may also require a platform subscription. A free-play event on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ended on November 17, 2025; it was a temporary promotion, not ongoing free access.
Is GTA Online free?
Only in specific circumstances. If you already own a compatible copy of Grand Theft Auto V that includes GTA Online, you can use that entitlement to access the online mode. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, GTA Online Standalone is also sold separately from GTAV. Availability and price depend on your platform, country, and current store offers.

Rockstar’s free-play event for the standalone game on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ran from November 11 through November 17, 2025. During that event, players did not need PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass. Rockstar says that after the trial ended, players needed to acquire GTA Online Standalone and the console subscription requirement returned. That dated offer does not make the game free now. Rockstar’s trial details were last updated November 11, 2025.
Another PS5 free-claim offer ran in 2022 and also required PS Plus for online play afterward. It is historical, not a current way to claim the game. PlayStation’s launch announcement describes that offer.

| Platform | Game access | Online access and other requirements |
|---|---|---|
| PC | A GTAV/GTA Online entitlement through the relevant PC store. | Internet connection, Rockstar Games account, and a compatible Windows PC. See the edition-specific specifications below. |
| PS5 | GTAV access or GTA Online Standalone through PlayStation Store. | The PlayStation Store listing says PS Plus is required for online play. |

PC requirements: choose the edition carefully
Rockstar’s PC store page lists separate system requirements for GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy. The following specifications are for GTAV Enhanced; meeting them does not establish that a different edition has the same requirements. Rockstar notes that requirements can change. Check Rockstar’s current GTAV and GTA Online store page before installing.
| GTAV Enhanced | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 (latest update) | Windows 11 |
| Processor | AMD FX-9590 or Intel Core i7-4770 | AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i5-9600K |

How much does access cost?
There is no single worldwide price: it varies by country, storefront, edition, and discounts. The US PlayStation listing previously showed an offer that ended September 24, 2026, so that price is not current. Check your local PlayStation Store listing or Microsoft Store listing for today’s price and the edition available to you. A console subscription, where required, is a separate consideration from the game’s purchase price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAre GTA+ or Shark Cash Cards required?
No. GTA+ is an optional membership for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and GTAV Enhanced PC that offers rotating benefits. Rockstar’s trial information says GTA Online is available through the GTA+ Games Library, but its catalog and eligibility can change; check the GTA+ Guide for current details.
