No. The claim that Grand Theft Auto VI is rated Adults Only in every major market is not supported by the official US record. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) lists the game as Mature 17+, not Adults Only 18+. A universal worldwide rating has not been established because the official classifications from every major regional board are not available.
What the official US listing confirms
The ESRB’s official record rates Grand Theft Auto VI M for Mature 17+. Its listed content descriptors are blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, use of drugs and alcohol, and in-game purchases.

The ESRB’s published wording states: “Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol.” The in-game-purchases descriptor also appears on the official listing.
That is the confirmed classification for the US market. It is not an Adults Only designation.

Mature 17+ and Adults Only 18+ are different ESRB categories
ESRB’s rating guide separates Mature 17+ from Adults Only 18+. AO is reserved for content suitable only for adults aged 18 and over. The two labels should not be treated as interchangeable shorthand for “a very adult game.”
| ESRB category | Age threshold shown by ESRB | GTA VI status in the US record |
|---|---|---|
| Mature | 17+ | Official rating assigned to Grand Theft Auto VI |
| Adults Only | 18+ | Separate category; not the rating shown for Grand Theft Auto VI |
Consequently, describing the US release as “AO” or “Adults Only” changes the classification rather than merely simplifying it.

Why “in every major market worldwide” is unverified
Video-game classifications are issued by national or regional systems, and their labels, age thresholds, descriptors and enforcement practices differ. An 18-style label in one territory does not automatically equal the ESRB’s AO category.

A reliable worldwide claim would require a final, primary-source record from each relevant board, such as PEGI in much of Europe, CERO in Japan, USK in Germany and Australia’s classification system, along with other jurisdictions where the game will be sold. A complete set of those records has not been established here. Secondary reports may describe adult classifications, but they cannot prove that every major market assigned an Adults Only-equivalent rating.

When comparing regional listings, check four things separately:
- Which rating board and jurisdiction issued the classification.
- The minimum age printed by that board.
- Whether the age label is legally enforced, enforced by retailers, or advisory.
- Whether the record is final or provisional and which content descriptors accompany it.
Platforms and the product covered by the rating
Rockstar’s official game page identifies Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with launch and pre-order information presented for the relevant market. The ESRB rating applies to that game product and should not be confused with ratings for trailers, merchandise or unrelated editions.

Can teenagers buy GTA 6?
The US record communicates an M 17+ classification, but it does not create one worldwide purchasing rule. Whether a teenager can buy the game depends on the country or state, local law, the retailer’s age-check policy and platform parental controls. A store may refuse a sale or require age verification even where a rating is advisory; another jurisdiction may apply a different statutory system.
For a specific purchase, read the rating shown on the local product page or box, then check the seller’s age-verification terms. Do not infer a legal prohibition from the word “Mature” alone, and do not assume that an 18 label overseas means the US product is AO.

How to verify a regional rating yourself
- Identify the country where the copy will be purchased and the board responsible for that market.
- Search that board’s official database for Grand Theft Auto VI, rather than relying on a screenshot or social-media post.
- Confirm the age number, category name and descriptors on the record.
- Check whether the listing is marked final, pending or provisional.
- Compare the board’s rules with the retailer and console account’s age controls before ordering.
The 65% ESRB statistic does not rate GTA 6
ESRB reported that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console downloadable video games in 2024 were E or E10+. That is a broad industry statistic, not a measurement of Grand Theft Auto VI and not evidence for an AO classification. GTA VI’s individual rating must be read from its own ESRB record.
Verdict
The defensible statement is precise: Grand Theft Auto VI is rated Mature 17+ by the ESRB in the United States. The claim that it is Adults Only in every major market worldwide remains unverified until each relevant regional board publishes a final classification.
