The short answer: who should buy GTA V now?
GTA V remains a sensible purchase for three groups:

“GTA V” is not always the same product

The PS5 storefront page shows a package containing both Story Mode and GTA Online, while the Xbox US listing identifies Series X|S Story Mode as an included add-on. Because store packaging differs, treat those descriptions as examples of what those pages displayed rather than a universal promise for every country or sale.
What you get in GTA Online
GTA Online is the multiplayer component. A standalone listing can make sense when you only want Online, but compare its price with the complete bundle before checking out. Those descriptions identify the feature direction, not a guaranteed frame rate or identical result on every television, console setting, or display mode. The detailed performance targets in the 2022 announcement are historical product information. Use the current store description and your console’s output settings when deciding whether the upgrade is meaningful.
PC Enhanced versus Legacy
Enhanced features
The current PC listing places GTA V Enhanced and GTA V Legacy in one bundle. Enhanced is the feature-focused choice for a recent computer, with ray-tracing features, support for FSR and DLSS technologies, and faster loading through SSD and DirectStorage improvements on supported devices.
“Supported” is important: these technologies depend on your graphics hardware, drivers, operating-system configuration, and storage setup. A computer that can launch the game may not support every enhancement or deliver the same visual mode. Check the live system requirements and compatibility notes before buying or migrating.
Why Legacy may still matter
Legacy can be useful when your computer does not meet Enhanced requirements, when you need compatibility with an older installation, or when your existing setup depends on the older version. The current PC listing describes a one-time transfer of Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression from Legacy to Enhanced. One-time means you should treat the transfer as a deliberate move, not a repeatedly reversible sync. Confirm the account and eligibility requirements in Rockstar’s current support documentation before starting.
Console migration
Take-Two’s March 15, 2022 announcement described one-time migration from PS4 and Xbox One to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression. The announcement also mentioned special migration rewards at that time.
That announcement is historical. It does not prove that every account remains eligible in 2026, that the same rewards are still offered, or that an upgrade is free. Check the current console listing and Rockstar support for your account before buying on the assumption that progress will transfer.

Prices, subscriptions, and optional spending
Observed storefront prices
The Xbox US store page displayed Grand Theft Auto V for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S at $39.99 or more when accessed. The Rockstar Store displayed Grand Theft Auto V at €39.99 at access time. These are regional observations, not fixed worldwide prices, and neither figure should be treated as a permanent price in 2026.
The PlayStation page showed the PS4/PS5 product included with PlayStation Plus Extra at access time. Catalog availability can change, so verify the current catalog and whether your subscription tier still includes the product before relying on that route.
GTA+ is optional
Rockstar describes GTA+ as an optional, cancellable membership that renews monthly and provides new GTA Online bonuses each month. It is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. On PC, Rockstar states that GTA+ Online benefits apply only to GTA V Enhanced.
You do not need GTA+ to buy or play Story Mode. If you are considering it for Online, calculate the recurring cost against the specific bonuses available in the month you would subscribe.
Shark Cards are optional
PlayStation listings show Shark Cards as optional cash packs for GTA Online. One US page displayed a Great White Shark Card bundle adding GTA$1,500,000 in-game currency. That currency purchase is separate from the game and is not required for Story Mode.

- Open the platform listing for your console or PC.
- Find the contents or included-items section.
- Select an edition that explicitly includes Story Mode.
- Check whether GTA Online is bundled or sold separately at a lower price.

Returning PC player
Compare your computer with the current Enhanced requirements. If it is capable, Enhanced is the feature-oriented option and the PC bundle includes Legacy as well. If you rely on an older setup, keep Legacy available. Before launching the transfer, verify that your Rockstar account is eligible for the one-time migration.
Returning PlayStation or Xbox player
Do not infer today’s upgrade price or migration eligibility from the 2022 announcement. Open the current console listing, check which generations it grants, and consult Rockstar support for the account-specific migration rules.
Budget-conscious buyer
Compare the local prices for the bundle and Online-only listing, then check subscription catalogs. A lower entry price may omit Story Mode, while a catalog inclusion may disappear or vary by region.
