Short answer: Green Bank, West Virginia, is the place most often meant by this headline, especially the Green Bank Observatory and its immediate surroundings. The observatory has no cellular service on site, and wireless transmissions are restricted in designated areas so they do not overwhelm the world’s most sensitive radio telescope. But “the last place in America without cell service or Wi‑Fi” is not a verified nationwide superlative. Green Bank is not an internet-free town, and the wider quiet zone is not one uniform cellular dead zone.
Where is this communications dead zone?
Green Bank is a community in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, in the Allegheny Mountains. The story centers on the Green Bank Observatory, home of the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope.
Three overlapping geographies are easy to confuse:
- The observatory campus: the area where visitors encounter the strongest practical restrictions and no cellular reception.
- The West Virginia Radio Astronomy Zone (WVRAZ): an approximately 10-mile-radius area around the observatory governed by state law and local interference controls.
- The National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ): an approximately 13,000-square-mile region spanning parts of West Virginia and Virginia.
The NRQZ was established by the Federal Communications Commission in 1958 to reduce harmful radio interference affecting the Green Bank astronomy facility and federal facilities at Sugar Grove. It is a coordination and protection area, not a map on which every transmitter and internet connection disappears. Does Green Bank have cell phone service?
At the observatory, the official visitor guidance is unambiguous: there is no cell service on site. The surrounding mountains, limited carriers and distance from infrastructure make coverage highly variable. Some places elsewhere in the broader quiet zone do have cellular service.

That means “no cell service” should be attached to the observatory or a particular central area, not automatically to all 13,000 square miles. Check your carrier’s map for the exact route, but do not treat a coverage map as a guarantee in mountainous terrain. Is Wi‑Fi banned?
Not everywhere. Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are radio transmitters, so their emissions can contaminate observations near the telescope. The observatory asks visitors to disable Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and cellular data before entering designated areas, and to power wireless devices off or leave them in vehicles where posted instructions require it. Rules vary by building, trail and distance from the telescope.

Local policy is also changing. In a recent arrangement, the observatory allowed controlled 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi at Green Bank Elementary and Middle School next to the telescope. That makes the blanket statement “Wi‑Fi is forbidden throughout Green Bank” outdated. Why does a telescope need this much silence?
Radio astronomy does not use visible light. Receivers collect extremely weak radio signals from objects such as pulsars, molecular clouds and distant galaxies. A nearby transmitter can be vastly stronger at the antenna than those cosmic signals, effectively drowning them out.

Potential sources include mobile phones, Wi‑Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, cordless phones, computers and development boards, microwave ovens and other electrical equipment. The issue is not that a phone blocks the sky; it is that its radio-frequency emissions can swamp the measurement. Is there internet for residents?
Yes. Green Bank Observatory says the community is not “the land of no internet.” Wired connections and other services support residents and the observatory itself, while broadband availability remains a rural infrastructure issue. Cellular service can be found in parts of the wider area, although terrain and provider coverage matter. The observatory discusses that distinction in An Advocate for Internet Access.

- Download navigation data. Save offline maps for the entire drive, not just the final destination.
- Print directions and bring a paper map or atlas. A phone may retain GPS and stored maps, but routing data, closures and back-road conditions may not update offline.
- Save essential details locally. Keep the observatory address, lodging address, reservation numbers and contact information on paper and on the phone.
- Plan an emergency contact. Tell someone your route and expected return time. Ask your lodging provider, the observatory or a local visitor facility where a usable landline is located; do not assume a mobile 911 call will connect.
- Follow posted device instructions. Photography is permitted in some visitor areas, while restricted rooms and trails may require wireless devices to be powered off. Medically essential equipment, including pacemakers, hearing aids and insulin pumps, should not be switched off; follow staff guidance.
- Carry basic contingencies. Bring a charged phone for offline use, a power bank, fuel and offline copies of reservations. Satellite messengers, satellite phones and Starlink equipment are not guaranteed solutions: they also transmit radio signals, and permitted use near sensitive facilities must be confirmed with the observatory.
What the popular claim gets wrong
- “No cell phones anywhere in the area”: too broad. The clearest official statement applies to the observatory site, while regional coverage varies.
- “Wi‑Fi is illegal in Green Bank”: misleading. Restrictions target harmful interference in particular locations and frequencies; controlled local Wi‑Fi now exists at the nearby school.
- “There is no internet”: false. Wired internet is available at relevant facilities, and the observatory depends on connectivity.
- “Every electronic device is banned”: false. Controls focus on radio-frequency emissions, with location-specific instructions and medical-device exceptions.
- “The NRQZ is a giant cellular dead zone”: inaccurate. It is a regulatory region, not a uniform coverage map.
Visiting the Green Bank Observatory
Before setting out, check the observatory’s current visitor information and directions. Hours, tours, access rules and device requirements can change as the observatory balances public access, community connectivity and interference protection.
