Yes—Gmail Help me write has a no-charge route, but only for eligible personal Gmail accounts in the United States. Google’s current availability table lists the free personal-account option in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. Personal users elsewhere generally need an eligible Google AI plan, while work and school users need an eligible Google Workspace plan. Access also depends on the account type, language, region and platform, and Google is expanding availability over time.
This guide reflects Google’s documentation checked on October 13, 2026. Because Gemini features can change by country, language and plan, verify the current matrix if the option is missing from your account.

What Gmail Help me write is
Help me write is Gmail’s Gemini-powered writing feature. Google describes it as a tool to draft new emails or refine existing text based on a prompt
. You can use it when starting a message or when you already have text that needs a different tone, clearer wording or another revision.
Recommended Free Tools
Google lists the feature for Gmail on the web, iOS and Android. It is an email-writing capability inside Gmail, not a separate mailbox or a requirement to buy a particular phone, computer or accessory.

The important distinction is that “available in Gmail” does not mean “available to every Gmail account.” Google separates eligibility by personal account, paid Google AI account and work or school account.
Who can use Help me write?
Personal Gmail users in the United States without a paid plan
A personal Google Account holder in the US can use Help me write at no charge, according to Google’s Gmail Gemini guidance. No Google AI subscription is required for this specific route.
Google’s current feature table lists these languages for personal Gmail accounts without a paid plan:

Personal Gmail users outside the United States
For personal accounts outside the free US availability, Google indicates that an eligible Google AI plan is required. The exact result depends on the country, language and plan combination shown in Google’s current matrix.

Being able to sign in to Gmail from another country does not by itself establish eligibility. If Help me write is absent, check the feature table for your account’s region and language rather than assuming the feature is broken.
Personal users with a Google AI plan
Google lists Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra as routes to Gemini features in Gmail for personal accounts. A paid plan can therefore provide access where the no-charge personal route is not offered, but the plan names alone are not a universal guarantee. Google still applies regional, language and feature-availability rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGoogle’s Google One documentation also lists Gemini in Gmail as a benefit associated with Google AI plans. See Google’s Google AI Pro benefits page for the plan-level description. That page establishes the feature benefit; it does not make every Gmail Gemini feature available in every country or language.
Work and school accounts
People using a work or school Google Account need an eligible Google Workspace plan. The organization’s Workspace edition, rather than a personal Google AI subscription, is the relevant access route.
Google’s Workspace with Gemini eligibility guidance says users must be at least 18 years old and cautions that some AI features may not be available in every language. That means an account can satisfy the Workspace requirement and still lack Help me write in a particular language or location.

Eligibility at a glance
| Account route | Is a paid plan required? | What Google’s documentation says |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Gmail, no paid plan | No charge in the United States | The current matrix lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish for this route. |
| Personal Google Account with Google AI | Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra | Availability varies by plan, language and region; the subscription is an access route, not a worldwide guarantee. |
| Work or school Google Account | Eligible Google Workspace plan | Google states an 18-or-older requirement on its Workspace with Gemini eligibility page and notes that some languages may not be supported. |
Google’s full feature matrix, including account-type, plan, language, region and platform distinctions, is in Learn about Gemini features in Gmail.
Do you need Google AI Pro?
No—not if you are a personal Gmail user in the United States whose account and language are covered by the no-charge route. Google AI Pro is one paid path, but it is not a prerequisite for that US personal access.
Pro may be relevant to a personal user in a location where free access is not offered, or to someone whose desired language or account configuration falls outside the free matrix. Google also lists AI Plus and AI Ultra, so Pro is not the only paid personal plan named in the current documentation.
For a company, university or school account, buying a personal Google AI plan is not the normal eligibility route. The administrator’s Google Workspace edition must be one of the eligible plans. Keep the two account categories separate when diagnosing access.
Language, region and device limits
Language matters
The no-charge personal US listing currently names eight languages. Google warns that language support can differ for Workspace features, and paid-plan availability can also vary by language. If Gmail is set to a supported language but the feature does not appear, the account’s country and plan may still be decisive.

Region matters
Google’s wording for personal free access is specifically “at no charge in the US.” It is not evidence that the same account can use Help me write without payment while traveling or after changing a language setting. Outside the listed free availability, consult Google’s current country and plan rules.
Web and mobile are supported
Google lists Gmail on the web, iOS and Android. The same eligibility rules still apply across those platforms; installing the mobile app does not bypass an account, plan, language or regional restriction.
How to use it when your account is eligible
The exact visual control can change as Gmail’s Gemini interface evolves, but the workflow is the same across supported platforms:
- Sign in to the right account. Confirm whether you are using a personal Gmail address or a work or school Google Account. Eligibility is attached to that account type.
- Open Gmail on the web, iOS or Android. Google lists all three platforms for Help me write.
- Start a new email or open text you want to revise. Google defines the feature as drafting new messages or refining existing text.
- Select the Help me write control when Gmail offers it. If it is not shown, use the troubleshooting checks below instead of assuming that a subscription is automatically required.
- Enter a clear prompt. State the purpose, audience, tone and any facts the draft must contain. For example, identify whether you need a concise meeting request, a polite follow-up or a clearer version of text you already wrote.
- Review the draft before sending. Check names, dates, recipients, attachments, promises and confidential details. Help me write produces or revises text; you remain responsible for accuracy and the final email.
Google’s public description does not promise a particular number of drafts, a specific response time or a fixed set of writing tones. Treat those details as interface-dependent rather than guaranteed plan benefits.
Why Help me write may not appear
Missing access usually reflects an eligibility mismatch rather than a general Gmail outage. Work through these checks in order:
- Account type: A personal account and a Workspace account follow different rules. A work or school address needs an eligible Workspace plan.
- Country: The no-charge personal route is stated for the US. A personal account elsewhere may need an eligible Google AI plan.
- Language: Compare Gmail’s language and your intended writing language with Google’s feature table. Workspace language support can be narrower.
- Plan: Personal paid access is tied to Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra; organizational access is tied to an eligible Workspace edition.
- Age for Workspace: Google’s Workspace with Gemini eligibility page states that users must be 18 or older.
- Platform: Google lists web, iOS and Android. Try a supported platform while signed in to the eligible account, but remember that the platform cannot override regional or plan rules.
- Rollout timing: Google says Gmail Gemini availability is being expanded gradually. A feature can therefore be documented for a category while not yet being visible on every account in that category.
Use Google’s feature-availability table as the deciding reference. It separates free personal access from paid Google AI and Workspace access and records the relevant language, region and platform constraints.
What “free” does—and does not—mean
In this context, “free” means Google says eligible personal Google Account users in the United States can use Help me write without a paid plan. It does not mean that every Gmail user worldwide receives the feature at no charge.
The official pages reviewed do not publish a separate usage allowance, per-message charge, user-count statistic or dated pricing study for Help me write. Do not infer an unlimited quota, a permanent worldwide offer or a trial period from the word “free.” For paid routes, consult the current Google AI or Workspace terms for the account’s country and edition.
Likewise, Help me write itself is not a separate device purchase. Google lists it as a Gmail feature on web and mobile, so a normal supported device is sufficient when the account is eligible.
Which route fits your situation?
| Your situation | Most relevant next step |
|---|---|
| Personal Gmail account in the US, using one of the listed languages | Check Gmail for Help me write; Google says this route is available at no charge. |
| Personal Gmail account outside the free US availability | Check whether Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra is offered for your country, language and desired Gmail feature. |
| Company, university or school account | Confirm that the organization uses an eligible Google Workspace plan and that you meet the 18-or-older requirement stated by Google. |
| Feature missing despite an apparently eligible setup | Recheck the account signed in, language, country, plan and Google’s latest matrix; Google says availability is expanding over time. |
Availability can change
Google’s Gmail Gemini pages are the authoritative place to recheck this feature because eligibility is volatile. Google can change the countries, languages, plans and included platforms without changing the basic name “Help me write.” The documentation used for this article was checked on October 13, 2026, so the table should be treated as current to that check date, not as a permanent promise.
For the feature definition and account matrix, use Learn about Gemini features in Gmail. For Workspace age and account eligibility, use Get started with Google Workspace with Gemini. For the Google AI plan benefit listing, use Use Google AI Pro benefits.
Bottom line
Gmail Help me write is free for eligible personal Gmail users in the United States, with Google currently listing eight supported languages for that no-paid-plan route. Outside that availability, personal users may need Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra. Work and school users need an eligible Google Workspace plan and must meet Google’s stated age and language conditions. Since access changes by account, country, language, plan and platform, the Google feature matrix—not the Gmail address alone—is the reliable final check.
