It runs on O2’s network, but that does not guarantee the same signal or performance everywhere. Check coverage for your postcode and weigh the plan terms against Ofcom’s satisfaction data and the more mixed, self-selected feedback on review platforms.
Does giffgaff use O2, and how is coverage in your area?
Yes. giffgaff says it uses O2’s mobile network, and Ofcom also identifies giffgaff as an O2-network provider. That shared host network does not mean every customer will get identical results: reception varies with location, buildings, device, usage and service arrangements. Ofcom also cautions that reported reception reflects users’ perceptions as well as network performance. Check giffgaff’s coverage and network status information for the places that matter to you—home, work and regular routes—rather than relying on a broad national impression. Ofcom’s 2025 customer-service report discusses provider network relationships and customer satisfaction.

If service is poor
giffgaff’s troubleshooting guidance suggests checking local network status and coverage, confirming that your plan or credit is active, and checking the phone’s connection. One suggested connection step is to select another network manually, then switch back to giffgaff/O2-UK. If you are deciding whether to switch, these checks can help distinguish an account or device issue from weak local coverage. See giffgaff’s network troubleshooting steps.

Are giffgaff plans worth it?
They may suit people who value month-to-month flexibility, but whether they are good value depends on your usage, coverage and the live terms. When reviewed, giffgaff’s SIM-only overview listed monthly-rolling options from 2 GB to unlimited, with displayed prices from £6 to £25 before any time-limited promotion. It also listed PAYG and 18-month options. A separate monthly-rolling offer showed 26 GB for £12, with unlimited UK calls and texts and the option to change plans. These are page observations, not guaranteed current prices or enduring offers; check the live pages before buying. View giffgaff’s SIM-only deals.

giffgaff describes a plan as lasting a calendar month and including data, calls and texts. Credit covers services outside the plan or use when no active plan covers it. Plans can renew automatically; the help guide also explains manual purchase routes. Check the renewal setting at signup and before each renewal if you do not want a recurring payment, and monitor your allowance if you might run out of data. The provider’s terms reserve the right to change prices or allowances with notice. Read how giffgaff plans and credit work and check the current terms.
Compare the total deal, not just the headline allowance
- Compare coverage at your actual locations, not only the network name.
- Check the allowance, any speed or usage restrictions, and the total cost after a promotion ends.
- Compare contract duration, cancellation terms and how easily you can change plans.
- For travel, check included destinations, roaming caps and charges.
- Confirm that your phone is compatible with the service and any 5G features you want.
- Consider support channels and complaint handling alongside price.
Does giffgaff include roaming?
The plans reviewed advertised up to 5 GB of EU roaming data at no extra cost. This is not a promise of free roaming worldwide: the terms describe roaming for periodic travel, destinations can change, and data beyond the applicable cap may be charged at 10p per MB. Check the live destination list and the exact terms for your plan before travelling, including any fair-use conditions. Check giffgaff roaming destinations and charges.

Can you use 5G on giffgaff?
giffgaff advertises 5G at no extra cost on the plan pages reviewed, but access depends on three things: a 5G-capable phone, 5G enabled in the relevant account and device settings, and 5G coverage where you are. A plan listing cannot establish that 5G is available at your address or predict a particular speed. giffgaff’s terms also state that 5G roaming is not currently available. Check giffgaff’s 5G requirements.

These survey results are encouraging, but they do not guarantee reception at a particular address or establish how every customer will experience support. Trustpilot presents a different kind of evidence. On 4 October 2026, giffgaff’s profile showed a 3.6 score from 31,514 reviews; its recent-review summary included praise for affordability and flexible plans as well as complaints about signal, speeds and reaching support. Review-platform posts are self-selected individual accounts, not a representative survey, and the score and count can change. See giffgaff’s Trustpilot profile.
Who is giffgaff a good fit for?
It is worth considering if you want a UK SIM-only plan with monthly-rolling options, value the ability to change plans, and have confirmed that O2-based coverage works where you need it. Look elsewhere if the local signal is unreliable, if a longer fixed arrangement better matches your needs, or if another provider offers better terms for your usage or travel. Before switching, compare the actual coverage, total ongoing cost, contract and cancellation terms, roaming rules, device compatibility and support options—not just the advertised data amount.
