Yes, if you liked Tsushima’s combat and world enough to want another polished open-world adventure; wait for a sale if its repeated activities were what wore you down. Ghost of Yōtei has a new lead, a different setting, and weapon-based combat, but it keeps a familiar open-world structure. It is a new story, not the next chapter of Jin Sakai’s.
How different is Yōtei from Tsushima?
Ghost of Yōtei is set 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, in rural 1600s Japan, and follows Atsu. It tells a standalone story, so you do not need to know Jin Sakai’s story to follow its basic premise. Jin does not appear, although Sucker Punch says his legend endures. Sony describes the game as an evolution of Tsushima’s design and mythos. Sony’s launch announcement and Sucker Punch’s FAQ explain the setting and connection.

Combat changes; the broad format stays familiar
Tsushima’s stance system gives way to a broader weapon arsenal: Yōtei emphasizes switching weapons to answer enemy defenses. Tom’s Guide praised the combat and polish, while TechRadar also recommended the game to people who enjoyed the first. These are individual reviews, not controlled head-to-head tests. Tom’s Guide’s review and TechRadar’s review offer their assessments.

The open-world action-adventure structure will feel recognizable. The scenery and presentation are strengths reviewers identified, but Tom’s Guide noted a sense of familiarity, and TechRadar cautioned that activities such as hot springs, bamboo cuts, and altars may grate on players tired of repeated tasks. Whether that is comforting or stale depends on what you wanted more of from Tsushima.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
Who should buy it—and who should wait?
- Buy at a price you’re comfortable with if you enjoyed Tsushima’s exploration, cinematic presentation, and combat, and the prospect of a different protagonist and weapon-based fighting appeals to you.
- Wait for a sale if repeated optional activities were your main frustration, or you want a radical redesign rather than an evolution of the same broad formula.
- Do not buy expecting Jin’s next chapter. Atsu is the lead of a standalone story.
- Check your hardware first. Yōtei requires PS5; there is no PS4 version. It supports PS5 Pro, but the cited product information does not say Pro is required. Sony also lists DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers. PlayStation’s product page has platform details.
There is no objective statistic that can settle value for every Tsushima owner. The recommendation is a matter of taste: the more you want another carefully presented open-world adventure, the stronger the case; the more you want novelty in the activity loop, the more sensible it is to wait.

Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
- Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.

For a Tsushima fan who wants another polished adventure and welcomes a new protagonist and weapon-focused combat, Yōtei is a reasonable purchase. Its biggest risk is not that it lacks a connection to Tsushima, but that its familiar open-world rhythm may feel too much like more of the same. If that structure was the problem last time, wait for a lower price; if it was the part you loved, the case to buy is much stronger.
