Yes—if you want Jin Sakai’s complete story, Iki Island and Legends, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut remains a worthwhile purchase. No—you do not need it to understand Ghost of Yōtei. Yōtei is a standalone PS5 adventure with a new protagonist, Atsu, set 300 years after Tsushima. Choose Director’s Cut for the earlier story and larger bundled package; choose Yōtei for the newer PS5-only experience. If you already own the PS4 version, Sony’s current PlayStation Store listing documents a $29.99 PS5 upgrade, and PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers should check the Game Catalog before buying.
The short answer: buy for Tsushima’s story, not as homework for Yōtei
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is worth buying when you want to play Jin Sakai’s full campaign, the Iki Island expansion and Legends online co-op in one package. It is not a required prequel for Ghost of Yōtei. Sony describes Yōtei as “not a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima,” and its launch materials call it a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. Yōtei introduces Atsu and takes place 300 years after the events of Tsushima.

That distinction answers the most common buying question. Playing Tsushima first can give you familiarity with the series’ ideas, visual style and interpretation of the “ghost” mythos, but Yōtei’s plot is designed to work on its own. You will not be missing a necessary chapter of Atsu’s story if you start with Yōtei.

For a new player, the practical choice is therefore about content, price and platform rather than story order. Director’s Cut offers more total modes and a PS4 option; Yōtei is the newer, PS5-only adventure. If you already own Tsushima on PS4, the upgrade route changes the calculation substantially.

What each edition actually contains
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut
Director’s Cut is the expanded version of Sucker Punch’s original samurai adventure. The package includes:
- The complete Ghost of Tsushima single-player campaign starring Jin Sakai.
- The Iki Island story expansion, which adds a separate region and narrative chapter.
- Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, the online co-op mode.
- PS5 enhancements, including haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support.
The edition is available on PS4 and PS5, with a physical PS5 disc sold through Sony Direct. The disc is the clearest choice if you want a permanent copy and do not want your access tied to a subscription catalog. Digital availability, pricing and upgrade eligibility can differ by account and the edition you own, so check the listing shown for your console before paying.
Ghost of Yōtei
Yōtei launched worldwide on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. It stars Atsu rather than Jin and moves the setting 300 years forward. The standard edition had a $69.99 MSRP at launch, while the Digital Deluxe Edition had a $79.99 MSRP; both figures are Sony Interactive Entertainment launch prices from 2025, not guarantees of the current sale price.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yōtei is a new entry rather than a continuation of Jin’s personal storyline. Its relationship to Tsushima is thematic and mythological: Sony says it represents an evolution of the earlier game’s design and mythos, while explicitly stating that it is not a direct sequel.
Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition
The Complete Edition launched on October 1, 2026. It adds the Echoes of Sekigahara narrative expansion, the Most Wanted solo mode and Ghost of Yōtei Legends co-op content. If you are shopping now, make sure you know whether a listing is the base game or Complete Edition; the latter is the expanded Yōtei package, while Director’s Cut remains the expanded Tsushima package.
Do you need to play Tsushima before Yōtei?
No. Yōtei has a new protagonist, a different time period and a standalone story structure. Sony’s official wording is unambiguous: it is “not a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.” You can begin with Yōtei without knowing Jin’s alliances, the events of the Mongol invasion on Tsushima or the Iki Island storyline.

Playing Director’s Cut first is still useful in three narrower ways:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- World and themes: you will recognize the series’ approach to samurai honor, local folklore and the “ghost” identity.
- Design context: you can see the systems and presentation that Yōtei evolves from, rather than encountering them for the first time in the newer game.
- Chronological curiosity: Tsushima gives you an earlier historical setting, while Yōtei jumps three centuries ahead.
Those are optional benefits, not prerequisites. If your priority is simply experiencing the latest game, start Yōtei. If your priority is understanding Jin’s complete arc, choose Director’s Cut regardless of Yōtei.
Director’s Cut versus Yōtei: the decision factors
| Factor | Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut | Ghost of Yōtei |
|---|---|---|
| Story role | Jin Sakai’s complete original adventure, with Iki Island | Standalone Atsu adventure; not a direct sequel |
| Setting and timeline | Earlier Tsushima story | Rural Japan in the 1600s, 300 years after Tsushima |
| Launch platform | PS4 and PS5; Sony sells a physical PS5 disc | PS5 only |
| Included modes | Campaign, Iki Island and Legends online co-op | Base Yōtei content; Complete Edition adds Echoes of Sekigahara, Most Wanted and Yōtei Legends |
| PS5 features | Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are included in the PS5 version | Designed for PS5 |
| Known price reference | Current store price varies; Sony lists a $29.99 PS4-to-PS5 upgrade | Standard launch MSRP $69.99; Digital Deluxe launch MSRP $79.99 (Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2025) |
| Subscription route | Included in PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog according to the current PlayStation Store listing; catalog access can change | Catalog inclusion and current pricing are not established here |
The table shows why there is no universal winner. Director’s Cut is the broader bargain when you value three distinct components—campaign, expansion and co-op—or need PS4 support. Yōtei is the straightforward choice when you want a new PS5-native story and do not care about replaying Jin’s adventure.
How much should you pay?
Buying Yōtei outright
Use the $69.99 standard and $79.99 Digital Deluxe figures only as launch reference points from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2025 release. In October 2026, the price shown on your regional PlayStation Store or at a retailer may be lower, higher in a bundle, or temporarily discounted. The Complete Edition is a separate 2026 product with additional content, so compare its contents rather than assuming every Yōtei listing is the same edition.
Buying Director’s Cut outright
The current PlayStation Store price for Director’s Cut is not specified in the available Sony information and can vary by region or promotion. A physical PS5 disc is the most predictable permanent-copy route: once purchased, you are not relying on a catalog license. Disc-based access still requires the disc in the console, and any online features may require the console’s applicable online-service rules.
Using the $29.99 PS5 upgrade
Sony’s current PlayStation Store listing documents a $29.99 upgrade from the PS4 game to the PS5 version. Treat that as an official upgrade path, not as a universal price for every owner or bundle. Eligibility can depend on whether your PS4 copy is physical or digital, the account that owns it and your region.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

If you own a physical PS4 disc and a PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive, the disc cannot serve as proof of ownership on that console. A PS5 with a disc drive is the safer hardware match for a physical upgrade. Digital PS4 ownership generally needs to be on the same PlayStation Network account used to claim the upgrade.
Checking PlayStation Plus Extra first
The current PlayStation Store listing says Director’s Cut is included in the PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog. Catalog membership and subscription prices can change, and a catalog license is different from owning the game permanently. Before purchasing, open the game’s PlayStation Store page while signed into the account that has Extra, confirm that the “Included” or equivalent catalog option appears, and check the edition shown.
Choose the catalog route when you expect to finish the campaign and expansion while your membership is active and you accept that access can end if the title leaves the catalog or your subscription lapses. Choose the disc or a direct digital purchase when you want indefinite access without those conditions.
Is Iki Island included?
Yes. Iki Island is part of Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. You do not need to buy it separately when you purchase that edition. It is an additional story expansion alongside the main campaign, not a replacement for it.
If you are buying a cheaper standard or used PS4 copy, read the listing carefully. The Director’s Cut label is the one that signals the bundled Iki Island content. A base-game listing may not include the expansion, and a used physical copy can have region-specific voucher conditions for digital extras. Confirm the exact contents before checkout.
What you get for your time
Choose Director’s Cut when breadth matters
- You want Jin Sakai’s complete story before exploring the newer game’s ideas.
- You want a campaign plus Iki Island rather than a single base-game storyline.
- You plan to play Legends online co-op.
- You still use PS4 or want a PS5 disc you can keep, lend or resell.
- You already own the PS4 game and qualify for the documented $29.99 upgrade.
- You have PlayStation Plus Extra and can access the catalog edition without another purchase.
Choose Yōtei when recency matters
- You want a fresh protagonist and a new historical setting rather than Jin’s established arc.
- You play exclusively on PS5 and prefer a game built for that platform.
- You want the latest entry’s systems and presentation without first completing an older campaign.
- You are specifically interested in the Complete Edition’s Echoes of Sekigahara expansion, Most Wanted solo mode and Yōtei Legends co-op.
Buy both when you want the full series context
Buying both is sensible for players who enjoy long single-player adventures and online co-op. Start with Director’s Cut if you prefer chronological release order, or start with Yōtei if you want the newest mechanics first. Neither order is required for comprehension. Avoid buying both at full price on the same day if you are unsure about your time; start with the edition that matches your platform and preferred protagonist, then wait for a sale or catalog access for the other.

How to choose the right purchase route
- Check your console. On PS4, Yōtei is unavailable, while Director’s Cut works. On PS5, both are options.
- Check ownership. If you own the PS4 Tsushima game, sign into the owning PlayStation Network account and inspect the Director’s Cut upgrade offer before buying a new copy.
- Check PlayStation Plus Extra. Open Director’s Cut in the PlayStation Store and verify that your active Extra membership includes it in the Game Catalog.
- Decide whether access must be permanent. Select a physical PS5 disc or direct digital purchase for ownership; select Extra when temporary catalog access is acceptable.
- Choose the story. Pick Director’s Cut for Jin and Iki Island; pick Yōtei for Atsu and the later setting.
- Compare editions. For Yōtei, distinguish the base release from the October 1, 2026 Complete Edition. For Tsushima, distinguish Director’s Cut from a base-game listing.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Mistake: assuming Yōtei is a direct sequel
Fix: Treat it as a standalone experience. Read the product description for the protagonist and edition, not just the word “Ghost” in the title.
Mistake: paying twice when you already own Tsushima
Fix: Check the $29.99 PS4-to-PS5 upgrade shown in Sony’s current listing first. Make sure you are using the account that owns the game and that your console can read a physical disc if your copy is disc-based.
Mistake: expecting a subscription catalog title to remain forever
Fix: Record whether your access comes from PlayStation Plus Extra or ownership. Catalog availability and membership prices can change; a purchased disc or digital license is the permanent-copy option.
Mistake: buying a base copy and expecting Iki Island
Fix: Verify that the listing says Director’s Cut. The edition, not the console generation alone, determines whether Iki Island and the complete bundled package are included.
Mistake: choosing Yōtei’s base edition when you want its new modes
Fix: If Echoes of Sekigahara, Most Wanted and Yōtei Legends are important to you, look specifically for the Complete Edition launched October 1, 2026.
Does Legends make Director’s Cut a better value?
It can. Director’s Cut combines a full story campaign, Iki Island and Legends online co-op, so players who will use all three receive more varied content than from a campaign-only purchase. Legends is also a reason to choose the edition even after Yōtei is available: Yōtei’s existence does not remove Tsushima’s multiplayer mode from Director’s Cut.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Do not buy Director’s Cut solely for Legends if you have no interest in online co-op. In that case, the deciding factors are Jin’s story, Iki Island, platform support and the price or catalog route available to you.
PS5 enhancements and platform considerations
The PS5 version of Director’s Cut includes haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. These features add controller feedback to traversal, combat and environmental interactions, but they do not turn the game into a different story. If you already enjoyed the PS4 release and are deciding whether to replay it, the upgrade cost and interest in the PS5 presentation are more relevant than the existence of Yōtei.
Yōtei is PS5-only, so a PS4 owner considering it must budget for a console capable of running it. Director’s Cut is the flexible option for households that still move between PS4 and PS5, especially when a physical PS5 disc is part of the plan.

You have never played either game
Buy Director’s Cut if you want the most complete package per purchase and are curious about Jin’s original story, Iki Island and Legends. Buy Yōtei if the new protagonist, PS5-only presentation and current Complete Edition content are more appealing. You do not need to purchase both before starting Yōtei.
You own Tsushima on PS4
Check the official $29.99 upgrade before considering a new Director’s Cut purchase. If the upgrade is available for your copy and you want to replay on PS5 or access the expanded features, it is the most direct route. If you only want Yōtei, skip the upgrade unless Jin’s story or Iki Island interests you.
You subscribe to PlayStation Plus Extra
Check the Game Catalog listing for Director’s Cut first. Catalog access can make Tsushima a low-risk way to sample the series before buying Yōtei. Downloading through Extra does not establish permanent ownership, so purchase a copy later if you want access independent of the subscription.
You want a collectible or permanent copy
Choose the physical PS5 edition of Director’s Cut sold through Sony Direct or another legitimate retailer, checking the package contents and region. This is the clearest permanent-copy recommendation for readers who do not use PlayStation Plus. For Yōtei, select the edition that includes the content you actually want, with the Complete Edition as the expanded 2026 package.

Final buying guidance
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is still worth buying after Yōtei’s release because its value comes from what it contains: Jin Sakai’s complete campaign, Iki Island, Legends and PS5 enhancements. Yōtei does not replace those experiences, and it does not require them. Buy Director’s Cut for Tsushima itself, use the $29.99 upgrade or PlayStation Plus Extra when eligible, and choose Yōtei when you want Atsu’s standalone PS5 adventure. If you want both stories, purchase order is a preference—not a requirement.
