Gemini Auto Browse is useful, but it is not risk-free. In Chrome’s agent mode, Gemini can navigate sites you are signed in to, use connected personal context, and send information to websites to complete a task. Google provides confirmations, takeover controls, site restrictions, and permission gates, yet describes the feature as experimental and says those safeguards do not guarantee protection. Use it only for tasks you can watch in real time; keep financial, medical, legal, workplace, credential, and irreversible actions under your direct control.
What Gemini Auto Browse does
Auto Browse is Gemini in Chrome operating as an agent rather than merely answering a question. You give it a multi-step goal and it can inspect pages, enter information, follow links, compare options, and prepare or complete administrative work. Typical examples include researching and shopping, planning travel, making a restaurant reservation, drafting or sending communications, and scheduling calendar events.

Before it starts, Google advises reviewing Gemini’s proposed plan. During the task you can stop the run or take over the browser tab. Those controls matter because an agent is interpreting page layouts and instructions dynamically; it is not following a perfectly deterministic script.
What information Auto Browse can access
Your current browser state
On a local Chrome installation, Auto Browse can work with the same websites available to you. That includes sites where you are already signed in. If a tab contains an open account, order history, message inbox, customer record, or other private page, the agent may be able to read what is needed to carry out your request.

Being signed in does not mean Gemini receives a copy of every password. It does mean the browser session can expose authenticated pages to the agent while it operates. Treat an open session as an access boundary: if you would not let another person view the page, do not leave it available to an autonomous browsing task.
Connected personal context
Google says Gemini may use Connected Apps, including Google Workspace, along with chats, tasks, Personal Intelligence, location, and other context enabled for your account. The exact context depends on which services and permissions you have turned on. A request such as “find a time for a dinner near my office and invite the project group” can therefore involve location, calendar, contacts, and conversation context rather than only the visible web page.
Review connected services before assigning a broad task. Narrow prompts are safer than open-ended instructions because they reduce the number of accounts, documents, and preferences the agent needs to inspect.
Information sent to third-party websites
To act on your behalf, Gemini may share information a selected site requires. Google lists examples such as your name, contact details, files, preferences, and information that may be sensitive. A hotel, retailer, airline, form provider, or messaging service may receive the data needed to complete the transaction or submission.
The disclosure is not limited to information you typed into the initial prompt. If a site requires a shipping address, phone number, attachment, dietary preference, or account identifier, the agent may use connected context or ask you for it. Check the destination and the fields immediately before submission.
Passwords and sign-in assistance
With your permission, Gemini can get help from Google Password Manager and Sign in with Google. Google says Password Manager does not share your passwords with Gemini. The permission is nevertheless a powerful sign-in capability and should be granted only for a specific site and task. You can remove it later in Chrome Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome > Permissions.

Do not interpret the password statement as a guarantee that an authenticated page is private from the agent. Once signed in, page content, account details, and actions performed in that session can still be within the task’s scope.
The main safety risks
Indirect prompt injection
Google’s security guidance identifies indirect prompt injection as the primary new threat for agentic browsers. An attacker can hide instructions in a web page, email, document, image, video, or other media. Those instructions may tell the agent to ignore your goal, reveal data, send a message, or perform an unrelated action.
For example, a product page could contain text that appears to be a normal support note but instructs an agent to copy information from another open tab. The page is untrusted content; it must not be treated as an authority over your request. Keep unrelated tabs closed, avoid giving an agent access to sensitive accounts during research, and stop the task if the plan changes unexpectedly.
Model and interface mistakes
Gemini can misunderstand a page or your instruction. Google warns that it might click the wrong control, select the wrong quantity, submit an unintended form, complete an unintended purchase, or report that a task is finished when it is not. Dynamic pages, similar buttons, pop-ups, regional variations, and stale information increase the chance of an error.
Read every confirmation screen yourself. A plausible summary is not proof that the correct item, amount, recipient, date, or delivery address was selected.

Risk rises sharply when Chrome is signed in to financial, legal, medical, employment, education, or personal accounts. A small navigation error can reveal records, alter an appointment, send a message, or change account data. Google tells users to monitor these tasks closely and to take over for high-consequence steps.

Disclosure to the site Gemini chooses
Even when an action is legitimate, the destination receives the information required to process it. A comparison task may lead Gemini to a different merchant or booking provider than you expected. Verify the domain, privacy terms, prices, recipient, and data fields before allowing submission. If the site asks for information unrelated to the goal, stop rather than assuming the request is safe.
Safeguards Google provides—and what they do not do

These are risk-reduction measures, not a security guarantee. Google explicitly says Chrome’s Auto Browse safeguards cannot protect against every risk and that monitoring is the most important protection.
How to use Auto Browse more safely
1. Define a bounded objective
State the exact result, allowed sites, budget or quantity, location, date range, and information the agent may use. “Find three refundable hotels under my stated budget; do not book” is safer than “book me a hotel.” Include an explicit stop condition, such as “ask before entering payment details or sending anything.”
2. Prepare a clean browser session
- Close tabs containing banking, health, legal, employment, private messages, or unrelated documents.
- Sign out of accounts that are not needed.
- Remove unnecessary extensions and avoid leaving confidential files open.
- Confirm that the task is running in the intended Chrome profile.
3. Review the plan before execution
Look for unexpected domains, broad searches through connected apps, file access, or steps that are not required. If the plan includes account creation, acceptance of terms, payment, a message to another person, or a data change, plan to take over rather than delegating that final step.
4. Watch the task continuously
Monitoring is not the same as checking a final summary. Watch which pages open, what text is entered, and whether the agent’s objective changes. Pause or stop when a page presents instructions addressed to the agent, requests unrelated secrets, or redirects to an unfamiliar service.
5. Confirm the final state yourself
After a reservation, form submission, message, or calendar change, open the destination account and verify the record, amount, date, recipient, and status. If the agent says it completed an action but no confirmation exists, treat the action as incomplete until you verify it directly.

6. Remove temporary access
When a task is finished, revoke Password Manager or Sign in with Google permission that you no longer need. Turn off browsing access when you are done with agentic tasks, and review the sites visited in Chrome history.

How to turn off browsing and manage activity
Disable “Let Gemini browse for you”
In Chrome, open the Gemini in Chrome controls and turn off Let Gemini browse for you. The exact presentation can vary as Google updates Chrome, but the setting is part of the Gemini in Chrome controls. Turning it off prevents new Auto Browse sessions until you enable it again; it does not erase previous activity.
Stop a task that is already running
Use the stop control in the task tab immediately. If you need to inspect or complete a step yourself, choose the takeover option. Stopping the agent does not automatically undo an action already submitted, so check the relevant account afterward.
Remove sign-in permission
Go to Chrome Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome > Permissions, select the site or sign-in permission, and remove access you no longer want. Revoking permission blocks future use of that sign-in pathway; it does not sign you out of every website or delete data held by a third party.
Review history and Gemini activity
Chrome history can show which sites were visited during a task. Google’s Safety Centre says Gemini Apps activity is set by default to auto-delete after 18 months. You can shorten or lengthen that period, or turn retention off. Deleting activity controls Google’s stored activity; it cannot retract information already sent to a website or erase that site’s own records.

Availability and account limits
Google’s current Chrome information says Auto Browse is available only to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States. The Help eligibility requirements include being at least 18, using a personal Google Account, running a current Chrome version, using English as the device language, and not using Incognito mode.
Google lists daily limits of up to 20 multi-step requests for AI Pro and up to 200 for AI Ultra (Google, 2026). “Up to” is important: limits can change, and availability or enforcement may vary by account and rollout. A subscription does not change the safety advice or make an agent error-proof.
What to do when something goes wrong
The agent visits an unexpected site or follows strange instructions
Stop the task, take screenshots or note the destination, and close the affected tabs. Do not paste secrets into a page that appeared unexpectedly. Review your open sessions and change credentials directly on the legitimate service if you suspect exposure.
A wrong form, message, or order was submitted
Open the service yourself and check its confirmation, order, sent-message, or activity record. Use the service’s cancellation, edit, or support process; stopping Gemini cannot reverse a completed submission. If payment or account security is involved, contact the provider promptly through its official channel.

Assume the task is incomplete until the destination shows a reliable confirmation. Check email, calendar, order history, or account activity independently. Avoid asking Gemini to repeat an uncertain action, because a duplicate booking, message, or purchase may be harder to undo.
You want to reduce future exposure
Turn off Let Gemini browse for you, remove sign-in permissions, sign out of sensitive sites, and review Chrome history and Gemini Apps activity. Remember that deleting Google activity does not remove information already delivered to a third-party website.
Bottom line
Gemini Auto Browse is best treated as a supervised assistant, not an unattended operator. It can reach signed-in sites and connected personal context, and it may disclose necessary information to the sites it selects. Prompt injection, ordinary navigation mistakes, and irreversible submissions remain plausible even with confirmations and takeover controls. Keep the scope narrow, monitor every step, take control before consequential actions, and disable browsing or sign-in permissions whenever you do not need them.
