It takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War, follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic “Dom” Santiago as the Locust Horde first emerges, and presents a contained survival story in Kalona.
That chronology makes the premise easier to approach than a late-series sequel. It does not guarantee that every reference is self-explanatory, nor does it mean the revised cover-shooter combat will be effortless for a first-time player. Your best starting point depends on whether you value chronological context, the original trilogy’s release order, solo play, or a cooperative campaign.

Why E-Day works as a first Gears game
The strongest argument for starting with E-Day is its position in the timeline. Xbox’s official listing places the game 14 years before the original Gears of War. Instead of asking you to understand an established conflict at its midpoint, it depicts the first days of the Locust invasion and the crisis that shapes Marcus and Dom.

That gives a new player a clear dramatic question: how do these soldiers survive when the threat is appearing for the first time? You are not entering a story that assumes you already know every faction, previous battle or character relationship. The setting supplies a beginning, while Marcus and Dom provide recognizable protagonists whose early experiences can be understood on their own terms.

The official launch material describes events unfolding over three days and nights in Kalona. A short, concentrated invasion scenario is easier to follow than a sprawling mythology lesson. You can learn what the Locust are doing, why the characters are fighting and how the city is responding while the campaign moves forward.
“Good starting point” should still be read as “accessible entry,” not “complete replacement for the rest of the series.” A prequel can include character names, visual callbacks or dramatic context that long-time fans recognize more quickly. The available official descriptions establish the setting and premise, but they do not promise that every connection to later games is explained from scratch.
Do you need to play the other Gears games first?
If you want the chronological beginning
No. You can begin with E-Day if your priority is to experience the earliest point in the timeline covered by this campaign. The invasion, location and central survival problem are introduced in the game’s own setup, so you do not need a franchise recap to understand why Marcus, Dom and their squadmates are fighting.

If you want the original release experience
Starting with the original Gears of War remains a valid alternative. Playing in release order lets you discover the series as its first audience did and then recognize how the prequel reframes its characters. The trade-off is that you begin after the events depicted in E-Day, so Marcus and Dom’s earlier experiences are treated as background rather than your introduction.

If you want the full franchise arc
E-Day should be viewed as an entry point, not confirmed evidence that the original trilogy is unnecessary. The prequel can explain its own emergency while leaving later campaigns to develop the broader consequences, relationships and history. If you eventually want the complete Gears narrative, plan to play the other mainline games rather than treating chronology as a substitute for release order.
What the campaign is like for a first-time player
A primarily linear story with room to explore
Xbox’s launch guide characterizes the campaign as primarily linear, but it is not described as a narrow corridor from one cutscene to the next. Larger spaces, alternative paths and possible side missions give you opportunities to choose how you approach an area. This structure can help newcomers because the main objective remains clear while optional routes let you investigate at your own pace.
Do not assume that every side activity is required to understand the central invasion. Treat alternate paths as chances to learn the environment, find a safer approach or spend more time with the setting. If you prefer a tightly directed first run, follow the main objective and return to optional exploration later.

| Mode | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Players who want to absorb the story and controls privately | You control your own pace and can pause to adjust settings or study an encounter. |
| Split-screen co-op | Two people playing on the same setup | A local partner can share the learning process without requiring an online group. |
| Online co-op | Friends or a group that wants a shared campaign | The campaign supports up to four players online, according to Xbox’s listing. |
One independent GamesRadar review assessed the campaign as playable by one to four players and judged it on its own merits. That is one reviewer’s perspective, not proof that every newcomer will understand the story or enjoy the same difficulty level. Use co-op as a social and tactical option, not as a guarantee that the game becomes easy.
Is the combat beginner-friendly?
E-Day retains the recognizable cover-shooter foundation associated with Gears, but The Coalition describes it as a new game built from scratch. Its gameplay update details changes to weapon handling rather than presenting the combat as an unchanged tutorial for older games.
Weapon changes that may affect your first hours
- Scope sway: aiming through a scope can involve movement that you must manage rather than simply pointing at a fixed reticle.
- Recoil tuning: some automatic weapons reward short bursts, so holding the trigger continuously may be less effective than controlled fire.
- Hot-reloading: reload timing remains an active part of weapon management; a well-timed input can matter, while a mistimed attempt can leave you vulnerable.
- Customizable campaign settings: available options let you tailor parts of the experience, and some changes alter the campaign’s difficulty tier.
These are developer descriptions of the systems, not independent measurements of how quickly a new player will learn them. Someone familiar with cover shooters may adapt quickly; someone new to the genre may need several encounters to understand when to leave cover, when to burst-fire and when to reload safely.

- Begin with the default or a lower difficulty tier if the game offers that choice. You can raise the challenge after you understand movement, cover and reload timing.
- Use cover as your normal position rather than treating it as an emergency button. Peek, fire a short burst and return to protection before enemies surround you.
- Practice each weapon’s rhythm. Automatic weapons with tuned recoil may be more controllable when fired in short bursts.
- Learn hot-reload timing in low-pressure moments before attempting it during a crowded encounter.
- Change one campaign setting at a time. If you alter several options together, it becomes harder to identify which adjustment helped.
The existence of customizable settings improves flexibility, but it should not be confused with a promise that every player will find the campaign gentle. The Coalition’s wording explains what can be changed; it does not establish a universal learning curve.

Which starting order should you choose?
There is no single correct order. Use the choice that matches what you want from your first campaign.
| Starting choice | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| E-Day first | Begins at the earlier timeline point; introduces the Locust invasion through Marcus and Dom’s origin-era experience; offers a self-contained survival premise. | Some callbacks or character significance may still land differently for a newcomer than for a veteran. |
| Original Gears of War first | Preserves release order and lets you encounter the series’ original presentation before seeing its prequel context. | You begin after the events of E-Day and may approach Marcus and Dom without their earliest story being your introduction. |
| Chronological series route | Starts with E-Day and then moves forward through the timeline. | Chronological order is not the same as release order, so later games may contain references designed for returning players. |
For a reader asking only, “Where should I begin?”, E-Day is the more natural recommendation when the goal is a chronological, origin-focused introduction. Choose the original first if preserving the series’ release-era discovery matters more than starting at the earliest setting.

Xbox’s official listing names Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam as platforms. It also lists inclusion with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Those are the access routes identified for the game; platform availability, pricing and subscription terms can change, so check the live Xbox or Steam listing for your region before buying or subscribing.
| Route | What the official listing says | Check before playing |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Listed platform; a physical Xbox Series X|S edition may also be available from retailers. | Edition, disc availability and regional stock. |
| PC through Xbox | Listed as Xbox on PC. | Windows requirements and whether your account has the required entitlement. |
| Steam | Listed platform. | System requirements, installation size and regional price on the current store page. |
| Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass | Officially listed as included plans. | Current catalog status, plan terms and whether access is available in your region. |
A subscription can be a practical way to test whether the combat and campaign suit you, while a purchase makes more sense if you want permanent ownership of the chosen edition. Neither route changes the story or the multiplayer modes; the decision is about access, cost and how you use your platform.

Common newcomer problems and practical fixes
“I understand the invasion, but not every reference.”
That is a normal limitation of entering a long-running series through a prequel. Focus first on the immediate conflict in Kalona and the decisions Marcus, Dom and their squadmates make during the three-day-and-night crisis. If a name or callback seems significant without a full explanation, note it and continue rather than stopping for a complete franchise history.
“The cover system feels familiar, but I keep losing fights.”
Familiar foundations do not mean identical handling. Spend a few encounters learning the revised recoil and scope behavior, use short bursts with automatic weapons and treat reload timing as part of positioning. Lowering the campaign difficulty tier through the available settings is a reasonable training step, not a failure.
“Co-op is making the campaign harder to follow.”
Four-player online support can create a busy battlefield. Agree on a simple plan before an encounter: who advances, who watches a flank and when the group pauses to adjust settings. If conversation and movement are competing with the story, play the opening section solo and invite others after you understand the basic rhythm.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“I cannot find the same access option.”
Availability can differ by country, platform, edition and subscription date. Recheck the current Xbox or Steam product page rather than relying on an old store result. A listing that includes the game in a subscription does not guarantee that the same entitlement, price or catalog status remains unchanged.
Optional companion material
Xbox launch material identifies Gears: The Art and Making of Gears of War: E-Day as an official companion book. It is optional reading for people interested in production art and development. It is not required background for understanding the campaign, and buying it should be treated as a separate interest rather than a prerequisite.
Who should start with E-Day?
- Start with E-Day if you want the earliest timeline setting, an origin-focused story about Marcus and Dom, or a campaign whose invasion premise is introduced in the game itself.
- Start with the original Gears of War if you care most about release order, the original introduction to the series or discovering the prequel only after knowing the later starting point.
- Use co-op if you learn best by sharing combat decisions with friends; use solo if you want uninterrupted control over pacing and story attention.
- Adjust settings early if revised weapon handling makes the first encounters overwhelming, then increase the challenge once the systems become familiar.
Verdict
Gears of War: E-Day is a good starting point for new players because its 14-years-before-the-original setting and first-days-of-the-Locust-invasion premise provide a clear chronological entry. Its solo, split-screen and up-to-four-player online campaign also lets you choose how to learn. The qualification matters: the revised combat may demand practice, and a prequel cannot guarantee that every connection to the wider series is self-contained. Begin with E-Day if you want an origin story and chronological route; choose the original first if release-order context is more important.
