Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Short answer: Gboard is not accurately described as either completely private or as sending every keystroke to Google. According to Google’s published Gboard documentation, ordinary typed content such as passwords and chats is not sent to Google, while searches, usage statistics and standard talk-to-text voice are sent for those features. Optional audio donations, federated learning, advanced voice-typing edits and writing tools have their own data flows.
That makes Gboard’s safety a matter of settings and feature choices. You can keep ordinary typing largely on the phone, disable optional learning and audio sharing, restrict microphone access and delete learned words. These statements describe Google’s published practices, not an independent code audit, traffic capture or security review.

What Gboard sends to Google—and what it says it does not
Google’s official Gboard privacy and learned-words help page separates ordinary keyboard input from features that deliberately contact Google. Google says that “anything you type, other than your searches, like passwords or chats with friends” appears under what Gboard does not send to Google. It also says learned words are stored on the device and can be deleted.

Those are feature-specific disclosures; they are not evidence that every keypress is uploaded. They also do not establish that every Gboard release behaves identically on every Android phone.

| Gboard activity | Google’s published description | Practical privacy meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary typing | Google says typed content other than searches, including passwords and chats, is not sent to Google. Gboard Help | Typing in a normal text field is different from invoking a cloud feature. This is Google’s statement, not an independent verification of network traffic. |
| Search in Gboard | “Your searches are sent to Google to get search results.” Gboard Help | Anything entered into the keyboard’s search function should be treated as a Google search request. |
| Usage statistics | Google says usage statistics are sent to Google. Gboard Help | Turning off one personalization control should not be assumed to stop every diagnostic or service transfer. |
| Standard talk-to-text | Google says voice is sent to Google for transcription when talk-to-text is used. Gboard Help | Microphone input has a different path from ordinary text entry; avoid it when you need to keep speech off Google’s transcription service. |
| Saved words | Google says learned words remain on the device and can be deleted. Gboard Help | Personal dictionary data is not described as a cloud-synced copy in this disclosure. |
In other words, “Gboard does not send ordinary passwords or chats” and “some Gboard actions send data to Google” can both be true. The distinction is what you do inside the keyboard and which options are enabled.
Permissions are not the same thing as collection
Android permission prompts tell you what an app may access, not exactly what it will transmit every time. Microphone permission enables voice input; it does not mean Gboard is continuously uploading room audio. The data flow depends on whether you activate talk-to-text, accept an audio-donation request, use advanced voice-typing edits or invoke another feature.
There is no single permission inventory that applies to every Android version, phone manufacturer, Gboard release, language or region. Menu names and available switches can change. Review the permissions shown on your own phone instead of relying on a universal list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck Gboard’s microphone permission
- Open Android Settings.
- Tap Apps (or App management on some phones).
- Select Gboard, then Permissions.
- Open Microphone and choose Allow only while using the app, or deny it if you do not use voice input. Google documents this path in its troubleshooting guidance.
Denying microphone access prevents microphone-based input, but it does not by itself disable Gboard Search, usage statistics, federated learning or writing tools. Treat each feature separately.
Personalization, learned words and federated learning
Gboard can adapt suggestions to the way you type. Google’s “Learn how Gboard gets better” page says federated learning does not send the text you speak or type to Google; instead, it sends what Gboard learns, where that learning is combined with learning from other users to improve speech and typing models.

Google says federated learning runs while the phone is charging, connected to Wi-Fi and idle, and is on by default. That description means the model update—not the underlying sentence you typed—is the item Google says is shared. It is still a Google-documented architecture, not an independently established audit result.
Review the learning controls
- Open Gboard Settings. You can usually reach it from the keyboard’s gear icon, or from Android’s app settings if the icon is unavailable.
- Tap Privacy.
- Review Personalise for you, Improve for everyone and Audio donations. Google documents these controls, but labels can differ by release or locale.
- Turn off the options whose sharing model you do not want. Disabling one switch should not be interpreted as disabling every Gboard network feature.
Delete learned words
To remove the local dictionary Gboard has built from your typing, use Gboard Settings > Dictionary > Delete learned words. On versions that expose it, you can also use the privacy screen’s option to delete learned words and data. The deletion control may look different after an app update, so follow the labels on the installed version.
Voice features do not all work the same way
“Voice typing” is an umbrella term. Standard talk-to-text, optional audio donation and advanced voice typing have different conditions and disclosures.
Standard talk-to-text
When you tap the microphone and dictate normally, Google says the voice is sent to Google for transcription. If keeping speech on the phone is a requirement, do not use standard talk-to-text; revoke microphone access or use a different input method. The published statement does not promise that ordinary voice dictation is processed locally.
Optional audio donations
Google describes audio donation as a separate, voluntary choice in its Gboard learning help. If you accept, audio snippets are sent to and stored by Google for speech-improvement work. Google says a snippet contains up to 15 seconds of speech, or up to 25 seconds where silence or unrecognized audio is included, and will not be kept beyond 18 months. Google also says human reviewers may listen to or transcribe some snippets.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Advanced voice typing on Pixel phones
Advanced voice typing has a narrower, device-specific description. Google’s advanced voice typing help says the feature requires a Pixel 6 or newer. Dictated text stays on the device except when you use Fix it or detailed edits.
For detailed edits, Google says: “When you use detailed edits, both your voice command transcript and the full text from the input field are sent to Google servers to process your request.” Google also says no audio is sent and no text or audio is stored on its servers for that request. Do not generalize this limited Pixel feature to all Gboard voice typing: the standard microphone workflow has a separate transcription disclosure.
Writing tools can use more context
Gboard writing tools have their own privacy implications. Google’s writing-tools documentation says the feature may use typing history and a snapshot of the screen at the time you use it to provide personalized suggestions.
Google says that even when personal context is turned off, input text is still processed through Private AI Compute. That is Google’s description of the service and its processing architecture, not an independently proven security property. If the text on screen is sensitive, avoid invoking writing tools in that field unless their processing model is acceptable to you.

How to choose a lower-exposure Gboard setup
There is no single “private mode” that covers every Gboard feature. Use this decision path:
- Keep ordinary typing: You can continue using the keyboard for normal text entry while recognizing Google’s statement that ordinary typed content, including passwords and chats, is not sent to Google.
- Disable optional sharing: In Gboard Settings > Privacy, review and turn off Personalise for you, Improve for everyone or Audio donations according to your preference.
- Avoid cloud-triggering features: Do not use Gboard Search, standard talk-to-text, voluntary audio donation, detailed edits or writing tools when their documented data flows are unsuitable.
- Restrict the microphone: Set Gboard’s microphone permission to Allow only while using the app or deny it when voice input is unnecessary.
- Clear local learning: Use Dictionary > Delete learned words, or the privacy deletion control available in your release.
- Use another keyboard if the trade-off is unacceptable: The available evidence here does not establish a universally most-private alternative, so compare any replacement’s own disclosures before switching.
How to read Google Play’s Data safety section
The current Google Play listing for Gboard includes developer-provided Data safety information. It says no data is shared with third parties and lists data categories the app may collect, encrypted transit and data-deletion information.
“No data shared with third parties” does not mean “no data is sent to Google.” Google is the app provider, and Google’s Gboard help pages explicitly describe transfers to Google for searches, voice transcription, learning and particular features. Google Play also cautions that Data safety practices can vary by use, region and age, and that the developer can update the disclosure. Read the Play section alongside the feature-specific Gboard documentation rather than treating either label as a complete network map.
Is Gboard safe for passwords, banking and private conversations?
For ordinary typing, Google specifically lists passwords and chats among content it says is not sent to Google. That makes Gboard different from a blanket claim that every keystroke leaves the phone. However, safety depends on keeping the sensitive text out of feature requests that have different paths.
- Do not paste a password into Gboard Search.
- Do not dictate confidential material with standard talk-to-text if you do not want voice sent for transcription.
- Do not accept audio donations on a device used for sensitive conversations.
- Do not invoke writing tools over a screen containing confidential text unless you accept the documented screen-snapshot and processing behavior.
- On Pixel 6 or newer, remember that detailed edits send the command transcript and the full input-field text to Google servers, even though Google says no audio is sent for that request.
These precautions address data exposure choices, not every possible keyboard vulnerability. The supplied Google pages do not constitute an independent security assessment of Gboard’s code, update process or network traffic.

Common misconceptions and fixes
“Gboard sends everything I type.”
Google’s published disclosure says the opposite for ordinary typed content other than searches, explicitly including passwords and chats. The correction is not that Gboard is entirely offline; searches, usage statistics, voice transcription and feature-specific processing still involve Google.
“Turning off personalization stops all collection.”
Personalization controls affect learning features. Google separately documents searches, usage statistics, voice transcription, audio donations, advanced voice-typing edits and writing tools. Review each one instead of relying on a single toggle.
“The microphone permission means Gboard records constantly.”
Permission enables microphone access. Google’s documented transfer occurs when you use voice features, and Android offers an “Allow only while using the app” choice on supported versions. Check the permission and avoid activating the microphone when you do not need dictation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Advanced voice typing proves all voice typing is local.”
It does not. The advanced feature is described for Pixel 6 and newer, with a special exception for Fix it and detailed edits. Standard talk-to-text has a separate statement that voice is sent to Google for transcription.
A practical verdict
Gboard is a reasonable choice if you understand and accept feature-level data transfers. Google says ordinary typed passwords and chats are not sent, while searches, standard voice dictation, usage statistics and selected learning or writing features involve Google services. The most privacy-conscious setup keeps microphone access limited, disables optional audio and learning controls, avoids cloud features for sensitive text and periodically deletes learned words.
If those conditions still do not fit your threat model, choose another keyboard and examine its own privacy documentation. No setting in Gboard should be presented as a guarantee that all input, audio or context always remains on the device.
