Is Fortnite Free to Play, and What Do V-Bucks Buy?

Yes. Fortnite Battle Royale and Creative are free to play, and you do not need to buy a Battle Pass or other content to access them. V-Bucks are optional in-game currency for eligible cosmetics and passes. Save the World also became free to play on April 16, 2026, according to Epic Games Support.

Which parts of Fortnite are free?

Battle Royale and Creative

Epic says Battle Royale and Creative do not require players to purchase content to play. Purchases are optional; they provide cosmetic benefits rather than access to these modes. You can play without buying V-Bucks, individual items, or a paid pass. See the Epic Games Store Fortnite FAQ and Epic’s free-to-play explanation.

Save the World

Save the World has had a different purchase history from Battle Royale and Creative. Epic’s support page states that it became free to play on April 16, 2026. Epic says all players can access the full experience. Free players earn X-Ray Tickets for llamas and shop items; players who previously bought Save the World as Founders retain the ability to earn V-Bucks through Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, and Storm Shield Defense missions. Details are on Epic’s Save the World page.

What can you buy with V-Bucks?

V-Bucks are Fortnite’s virtual currency. They can be used for eligible in-game offers, including Item Shop cosmetics and passes. Cosmetics include outfits, emotes, and pickaxes; Epic’s purchasing information also lists Jam Tracks. Shop inventory and offers can vary by season, platform, and region, so check the in-game store for what is currently available.

Epic’s listed pass prices are:

Pass Price Price qualification
Battle Royale Battle Pass 800 V-Bucks Effective March 19, 2026, according to Epic Support
LEGO Pass 1,200 V-Bucks Price listed on Epic’s pass information page, accessed October 4, 2026
OG Pass 800 V-Bucks Price listed on Epic’s pass information page, accessed October 4, 2026
Music Pass 1,200 V-Bucks Price listed on Epic’s pass information page, accessed October 4, 2026

Prices and contents can change. The Battle Pass can include outfits, V-Bucks, emotes, and other rewards, but the actual rewards vary by season. Epic says certain expired Battle Pass items may later appear in the Item Shop at least 18 months after the pass expires. Consult Epic’s Battle Pass price update and its current Battle Pass pricing support page alongside the live game.

V-Bucks are not cash

V-Bucks are for use within Epic’s ecosystem. Epic’s End User License Agreement says credits such as V-Bucks cannot be exchanged for real currency or items outside that ecosystem. They are not a way to buy real-world goods.

How can you get V-Bucks?

  • Buy them directly: Purchase options and availability depend on the platform and storefront.
  • Redeem a V-Bucks card: Epic says physical cards are available from authorized retailers and online. Follow the redemption instructions for your card and account.
  • Earn them through pass progression: All players have access to the Free Pass and may earn V-Bucks as they progress through pass levels. The paid Battle Pass is optional; check the current season’s reward track rather than assuming it will cover a particular purchase.
  • Other routes: Epic lists Fortnite Crew, starter or quest packs, and pass progression among ways to get V-Bucks in Battle Royale. Offers and terms can vary.

Be wary of third-party sites or messages promising free V-Bucks. Epic warns about suspicious external offers and says genuine offers appear on official Epic websites, social channels, or the Epic Games Store. Its guidance is available at Epic’s scam and free V-Bucks warning.

Should you buy a pass, shop item, or nothing?

There is no universally best-value choice: it depends on which item you want and how you play. Before spending, check these points:

Rank #3
Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online
  • Is the specific item included? A pass offers its season’s reward track; a shop cosmetic may be available only through the Item Shop. Check the live offers rather than assuming an item will return.
  • What does it cost now? Confirm the current V-Bucks price and pass season in-game. Epic can change prices, availability, and functionality.
  • Will you progress far enough? A pass’s potential rewards depend on earning and claiming them. Consider your expected play time before paying for a track.
  • Are you using the intended account and platform? Verify the Epic account before purchase, and check the platform’s storefront rules.

Will purchased V-Bucks carry across platforms?

Epic says V-Bucks bought with Epic account balance are available across platforms except Nintendo, which does not support Fortnite Shared Wallet. Items purchased with V-Bucks can still appear in the Locker across platforms connected to the Epic account. Because wallet behavior depends on how and where currency is purchased, check Epic’s Shared Wallet guidance and the relevant platform storefront before buying.
