Final Fantasy VII Revelation is shaping up to be one of the series’ most ambitious games, but current previews do not prove it is the biggest Final Fantasy ever by any measurable standard. Director Naoki Hamaguchi says the remake trilogy has aimed to scale up with each installment; early hands-on reports point to a world designed for breadth and verticality, with the Highwind enabling a new form of traversal. That is evidence of a design ambition, not a verified franchise-wide size record.
What “biggest” means for Revelation
There is no agreed series-wide measure behind the “biggest Final Fantasy” claim. The available previews do not provide comparable world-area figures, completion times, or other data that would establish an all-time ranking. Instead, they describe several kinds of scale: a larger-feeling overworld, vertical environments, expanded airship traversal, and more systems for combat and party customization.

In an interview with Den of Geek, director Naoki Hamaguchi said, “One of the goals of the series was to scale up with each successive title,” and added, “For Revelation, rather than just making everything feel wide, we really wanted to create this sense of scale and verticality with everything.” Those comments describe the team’s intent; they are not a formal size specification.
How the Highwind changes exploration
Both hands-on previews identify the Highwind as a major means of overworld travel. Den of Geek reports that players can leave the airship by parachuting into environments. GamingBible describes landing in designated explorable areas, while noting that some zones are inaccessible or marked as no-fly areas. Taken together, the reports suggest a mix of open-air travel and controlled landing points rather than unrestricted flight everywhere.

GamingBible also describes the Highwind as a hub for managing the party, equipment, quests, and activities. Its account characterizes some overworld areas as scaled up compared with the original game, but gives no measured dimensions. These are observations from an early preview build, not confirmed maps or final-game specifications.
What the previews say about combat and the party
Den of Geek reports expanded combat features, a more varied synergy system, and Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine as new playable party members. Hamaguchi said, “One of the goals of the synergy system is to experience different tactics and refresh the experience.”

- Cid Highwind: The preview describes techniques that use timed inputs and strengths in aerial combat.
- Vincent Valentine: The preview describes options for close- and long-range attacks, as well as a temporary Beast Mode that reduces his health.
- FITS customization: The Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear system lets players customize characters into four types, linking costume changes with combat roles. Hamaguchi said, “They’re customizable into four different types, rather than just random jobs, using what was already there in the battle system.” He said the developers avoided calling it a conventional job system because that label could imply a more rigid structure.
The same preview reports returning chocobo mounts. These systems add variety to how players move and fight, but the preview evidence does not establish how much total content the finished game will contain.

How strong is the “biggest ever” claim?
The evidence supports calling Revelation an attempt to push the remake trilogy’s scale further, especially through vertical environments and airship-enabled travel. It does not support a definitive claim that the game is larger than every other Final Fantasy. The previews are based on early builds, and neither offers a consistent comparison across the franchise.
The fairest comparison is with Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, since Hamaguchi’s stated goal concerns scaling up successive trilogy entries. Even there, the available reporting points to intended feel and observed features rather than a common metric. Treat “biggest” as an indication of ambition, not a proven record.
Quick Recap
What to know before treating the previews as final
- The Den of Geek report is an interview and hands-on preview from Tokyo Game Show 2026; GamingBible’s report is a Gamescom preview. Neither is a review of the finished game.
- The Highwind’s reported landing restrictions mean the previews do not describe fully unrestricted flight across every area.
- The reported release date and platforms should be checked against current publisher listings before making plans to buy.
- The brief mention of downloadable content in preview coverage does not establish a confirmed post-launch plan or its scope.
