Yes—if you want a classic fantasy JRPG and are willing to meet a game from 2000 on its own terms. Final Fantasy IX has a strong historical reputation and is listed across several modern platform families, but that alone cannot tell you whether its pacing, controls or presentation will suit you. This spoiler-free review weighs what is established about the game against the questions a new player should consider; it is not based on firsthand play testing.

Is Final Fantasy IX worth playing today?

Final Fantasy IX is a reasonable choice for someone drawn to classic fantasy role-playing rather than expecting a contemporary action-RPG. Its genre is identified as JRPG, and its original PlayStation release dates to 2000. That age is both useful context and the key qualification: whether it feels inviting or dated will depend on your tolerance for older presentation and design conventions.

The recommendation is about fit, not a guarantee of enjoyment. The available evidence does not establish how the combat feels in practice, how the game is paced, or how well any current port performs. If those details are decisive for you, look for platform-specific information or recent player impressions before choosing an edition.

What kind of game should you expect?

Square Enix’s official product page identifies Final Fantasy IX as a JRPG. The sources available here do not establish a reliable spoiler-free story synopsis, so the safest expectation is broad: a fantasy role-playing game, not a contemporary action-RPG. This review avoids plot specifics rather than risk revealing story developments.

  • Gorgeous High-Definition Graphics – In addition to the visual upgrades that the main character models, textures, and backgrounds received for the PS3 version, more NPCs and monsters join their carefully reworked counterparts
  • High-Definition Audio - Play FINAL FANTASY X with the beautifully remastered soundtrack or, new to the PS4 version, switch back to the original classic tracks

For context, Metacritic’s details page records November 13, 2000 as the initial release date. Release histories can vary by territory, so that date should not be read as the first launch date everywhere. The age of the original release is a better guide to the kind of design era you are approaching than any claim about a particular technical shortcoming.

Does Final Fantasy IX feel too old to play now?

There is no universal answer. The game’s 2000 origin makes comfort with older presentation and conventions an important part of the decision. If you mainly want a modern-feeling action game, the JRPG label and release era are reasons to check further before buying. If you are open to a classic role-playing game, the age alone is not a reason to rule it out.

Current performance, controls, accessibility options, pacing and the details of the combat system are not established by the cited sources. It would be misleading to promise that a particular port fixes or preserves any specific feature without edition-specific evidence.

What is Final Fantasy IX’s reputation?

Metacritic’s PlayStation critic page reports a 94 Metascore based on 22 critic reviews. That is historical aggregator context for the PlayStation release—not a rating of every later version, a current user score, or a prediction of whether you will enjoy it.

FINAL FANTASY I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition 2024 - ESRB (PS4)
  • The games that inspired a generation come to life once more, in the ultimate 2D pixel remaster!
  • These games are newly developed remaster editions based on the original titles. Some of the changes and additional elements found in other remakes of these games are not included.

Steam’s listing says the game has sold over five million copies since its release in 2000, attributing the statement to Square Enix. The page does not say when that milestone was reached, so it should not be treated as an annual or dated sales figure. The sales milestone and the PlayStation critic score show lasting recognition; neither answers the personal question of whether the game’s age and genre suit you.

What platforms can you play Final Fantasy IX on?

Square Enix’s official product page displays platform marks for mobile, Steam/Windows, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. Steam lists the PC release date as April 14, 2016, and identifies Square Enix as developer and publisher. These listings establish platform families, not that a specific edition is currently purchasable in every country or storefront.

  • Before choosing: Check your regional storefront for the edition’s current listing and price.
  • For PC: Steam lists the Windows release, but the cited material does not provide a current performance comparison against console or mobile editions.
  • For a physical Switch copy: A Reddit repost quotes a Square Enix Asia announcement about a physical package. That repost does not establish current stock, edition contents or present-day retail availability.

The best option therefore depends on your hardware, region and preferred screen. Neither current price nor platform-by-platform performance is established here.

Is Final Fantasy IX a good first Final Fantasy game?

It can be a sensible first choice if you specifically want to try a classic fantasy JRPG. The sources establish the genre, original release era and the PlayStation version’s historical critic score, but do not compare it with other Final Fantasy games or verify how approachable it is for newcomers. Choose it for its classic-RPG identity, not on the assumption that it represents every era or style of the series.
