Yes—Elden Ring can be an excellent first Soulslike if you are willing to learn through repeated attempts and use exploration to find help or another route. Its open world lets you leave a difficult fight, build strength elsewhere, and return with different equipment. Spirit Ashes and online co-op can reduce the pressure of some encounters. However, there is no conventional difficulty setting, and those tools do not remove the need to learn timing, positioning, and boss patterns.
The right choice depends less on whether you are an experienced action-game player and more on how you react to demanding combat. If retrying a boss feels like useful practice, Elden Ring gives you many ways to make progress. If you want a smooth, mostly linear adventure with a selectable easy mode, its structure may feel frustrating.

Who will enjoy Elden Ring as a first Soulslike?
Elden Ring is a strong starting point for players who want freedom to solve problems in different ways. A blocked path is rarely the only immediate activity: you can explore, find equipment, improve your character, learn more about the world, or ask other players for help. The game therefore gives beginners room to step away from a challenge instead of repeatedly attacking the same obstacle at the same strength.

Enemies can punish mistimed attacks, careless healing, or standing in the wrong place. Progress often comes from observing an encounter, changing your approach, and trying again. The game expects you to accept failed attempts as part of learning rather than as evidence that you chose the wrong character.

These trade-offs are why “good for beginners” and “easy for beginners” are not the same judgment. Elden Ring supplies more ways to recover from a difficulty spike than a linear game might, but it still asks you to engage with its combat system.
Why the open world helps new players
Leave a fight and return stronger
Bandai Namco describes exploration, leveling, equipment, and discoveries as ways to tackle a challenge elsewhere. In practical terms, a boss that stops your progress does not always require immediate mastery. You can travel in another direction, collect resources and equipment, and return after your character or your understanding has improved.
This is the most important beginner advantage: a failed attempt does not have to end your session. Treat a difficult encounter as information. Notice which attacks catch you, whether your current range is comfortable, and whether you are spending too much time in the arena before deciding whether to continue or explore.
Use Guidance of Grace without treating it as a mandatory route
The starter guide explains that Guidance of Grace points toward possible destinations. It is a directional hint, not a requirement to ignore everything else. Follow it when you want a clear next objective; roam away from it when a nearby area feels more manageable or interesting.
Discovered Sites of Grace can be selected for map travel. The starter guide notes that travel is blocked in some dungeons, so being unable to teleport does not necessarily indicate a broken system. You may need to leave the dungeon normally before fast travel becomes available again.
Exploration is a progression tool, not just sightseeing
For a first-time player, exploration can provide a practical response to difficulty. New equipment, discoveries, and opportunities to develop your character give you more options than repeatedly using the same attack pattern. The world’s scale also means you can change the kind of problem you are solving: look for a less demanding area, learn the controls against ordinary enemies, and return to a major fight later.
What “no easy mode” means
Elden Ring does not include a conventional difficulty selector in its options menu. Bandai Namco presents the game’s assistance tools and open-ended progression as ways newcomers can approach difficult content, not as an easy setting that changes enemy behavior or damage values.
That distinction matters when setting expectations. Spirit Ashes and co-op can give you additional breathing room, but you still need to understand basic combat. Assistance may create an opening to heal or attack; it does not guarantee that every encounter will be safe. If you are looking for a mode that automatically makes enemies less aggressive or reduces the consequences of mistakes, Elden Ring does not offer that type of switch.
Spirit Ashes: optional help for difficult areas and bosses
Spirit Ashes are summonable allies. The publisher’s guidance says you need both the Spirit Calling Bell and the relevant ashes, and that spirits can aid you in difficult areas and boss battles when summoning is permitted. Different spirits have distinct roles, so experimenting is part of finding a support option that suits your situation.

How to obtain the Spirit Calling Bell
- Obtain the Spectral Steed Whistle.
- Meet Renna at the Church of Elleh after obtaining the whistle. The publisher’s early-game tips describe this as the early opportunity to receive the Spirit Calling Bell.
- If you missed that opportunity, continue until you are invited to Roundtable Hold; the same guidance says the bell can then be bought there.
The exact opportunity can be missed, so do not assume that failing to meet Renna at the church permanently prevents you from using spirits. The alternative purchase route is part of the publisher’s stated guidance.
Know when a spirit can be summoned
Look for the on-screen monument indicator. The publisher identifies that indicator as the signal that spirit summoning is available in the current location. Summoning is therefore situational rather than a universal command you can use everywhere.

Spirit summons are optional tools, not proof that you are playing incorrectly. Use them when an encounter is overwhelming, when you want a distraction that creates attack windows, or when you are learning an area. You can also choose not to use them if you prefer to learn an encounter alone.
There is one important limitation: the starter guide says spirits cannot be summoned during multiplayer. Decide whether you want offline spirit assistance or online player co-op for a particular attempt; the two systems are not interchangeable in the same session.
Co-op: real players, not an offline easy mode
Bandai Namco says two other players can join you. Co-op can supply extra damage, draw an enemy’s attention, and make a difficult encounter feel more manageable. It is still different from an offline easy mode: other players bring their own decisions and timing, and multiplayer has its own rules and requirements.
Think of co-op as collaboration rather than an automatic reduction in difficulty. You may learn by watching another player create openings, but you still need to move, attack, defend, and respond to danger. Because spirit summoning is unavailable during multiplayer, choose the assistance method that matches your goal for that attempt.
The death-and-rune loop every beginner should understand
Death has a recoverable cost. The starter guide says your carried runes drop at the location of death. If you return to that location before dying again, you can recover them. A second death before recovery means the dropped runes are lost.
- After dying, identify the location of the dropped runes.
- Plan the safest route back rather than rushing blindly through every enemy.
- Recover the runes when you reach the marked location.
- If the route is too dangerous, consider whether the amount at risk justifies the attempt.
Runes are used for progression and other purposes, so losing a large carried amount can feel significant. Avoid treating every death as an emergency that demands an immediate rematch. Sometimes the better decision is to explore elsewhere, return with a clearer plan, and accept that a small amount may not be worth a reckless recovery attempt.
A practical first-session plan
1. Learn the basic controls before chasing major targets
Use the starter guide’s coverage of controls and basic combat as your orientation. Practice movement, attacks, defense, healing, and the timing of your chosen actions against ordinary enemies. Your first objective is not to defeat the hardest visible opponent; it is to understand what your character does reliably.

2. Follow Guidance of Grace until you understand the rhythm
Let the guidance point you toward possible destinations while you learn how the world connects. When a route becomes too punishing, mark the problem mentally and explore another direction instead of assuming you must solve it immediately.

Obtain the Spirit Calling Bell through Renna at the Church of Elleh after receiving the Spectral Steed Whistle, or use the Roundtable Hold purchase route if you missed the meeting. Then test spirit summoning when the monument indicator appears. Learning the system in a manageable area is less stressful than trying to understand it during a boss attempt.
4. Treat each failed attempt as a diagnostic
After a death, identify one specific cause: an attack you failed to recognize, a heal taken at the wrong moment, or a position that left you trapped. Change one thing on the next attempt. This turns repetition into a method rather than a cycle of identical failures.
5. Spend progress deliberately
Do not carry a large number of runes through an area simply because you hope to reach the next destination. Use available opportunities to develop your character and equipment, then explore with less at risk. The game’s open structure rewards returning to an obstacle with a better plan.

Bandai Namco Entertainment America described Elden Ring in 2023 as a “100+ hour experience” for players who choose to fully explore everything. That is a conditional publisher estimate, not an average completion time or a requirement for finishing the main progression. A player who focuses on a narrower route may spend less time; a player who investigates optional areas and discoveries can spend substantially longer.

It gives you many opportunities to improve away from a difficult boss, but it also means you can lose your bearings. Use Sites of Grace and Guidance of Grace as orientation aids, while accepting that the game intentionally leaves room for unscripted detours.
Is Elden Ring too hard for a beginner?
It is likely to feel too hard if you need consistent success, dislike repeating encounters, or expect every visible objective to be appropriate for your current strength. The lack of a conventional difficulty setting means you cannot simply lower enemy challenge when the combat becomes demanding.
It is more likely to suit you if you are comfortable changing plans. The game gives you several forms of control over the experience:
- Explore a different route instead of forcing a fight.
- Build strength through leveling and equipment.
- Use Spirit Ashes where the monument indicator permits summoning.
- Invite up to two other players for co-op.
- Return to a challenge after learning from an earlier attempt.
None of these options erases the learning curve. They change the conditions under which you learn it.

How to compare Elden Ring with another first Soulslike
There is no reliable universal ranking that proves one Soulslike is easiest for every new player. Compare games using the factors that affect your own tolerance and preferred learning style:

Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Forcing the same boss immediately
Fix: Leave the arena, follow another route, and return after exploring or improving your equipment. The open world is designed to support this choice.
Assuming assistance means the game should now be easy
Fix: Treat Spirit Ashes or co-op as opportunities to create openings, not guarantees. Continue watching enemy patterns and managing your position.
Rushing to recover runes after death
Fix: Evaluate the route and the value at risk. A second death removes the dropped runes, so a reckless recovery attempt can make the original loss worse.
Searching for a difficulty option that is not there
Fix: Adjust your approach through exploration, leveling, equipment, Spirit Ashes, or co-op. Elden Ring does not provide a conventional menu-based easy mode.
Expecting spirit summons in every situation
Fix: Look for the monument indicator and remember that spirits cannot be summoned during multiplayer.
Bottom line for a first-time player
Elden Ring is a good first Soulslike for a player who values discovery and can accept learning through failure. Its open world, progression choices, Spirit Ashes, and co-op give beginners practical ways to respond when a fight is beyond their current ability. The game is not universally easy, and it is not unsuitable for everyone new to the genre. Decide based on your willingness to retry, explore, and change tactics rather than on the absence of a difficulty menu.
