The franchise had passed 14 million cumulative units worldwide as of March 31, 2026, according to Capcom. That figure covers the entire Dragon’s Dogma series, not Dragon’s Dogma 2 alone, and is context rather than a sales measure for Dark Arisen.

A substantial expansion rather than a cosmetic add-on
Dark Arisen adds the Norgan region and a new story. The expansion also introduces 12 Lost Rites dungeons, rare equipment and additional character-creation options, as outlined in the June 25 PlayStation Blog overview.
The PS5 Pro review praised Norgan’s story, progression, boss encounters and loot chase. It also found the new fights challenging. The 12 Lost Rites are distributed through the existing world: some are substantial dungeon crawls, while others are brief combat-focused sequences. That uneven scale means the expansion adds variety, but not every dungeon delivers the same depth.
How the Switch 2 version actually performs
30 FPS is the base target
Switch 2 does not run the game natively at 60 frames per second. Producer Naoto Oyama told Famitsu, in the English rendering reported by Nintendo Life, that the base frame-rate target is 30 FPS in both handheld and TV modes.
The game offers a locked 30 FPS option and a variable-frame-rate option. It also includes frame generation, which interpolates additional frames to produce motion described as equivalent to 60 FPS. Interpolation is not the same as rendering a native 60 FPS image: it can introduce slight ghosting around moving objects. The launch reviewer found the effect modest and generally preferred variable frame rate.

Handheld and docked compromises
The Switch 2 review reports visual downgrades compared with PS5 Pro, longer loading in Pawn rifts and cutscenes, and occasional choppy frame rates. Stutter was more noticeable in docked play. The reviewer nevertheless found this version smoother than the original 2024 launch experience on PS5; that is a historical comparison and should not be read as a controlled test against the current PS5 build.
Nintendo’s UK product listing specifies handheld and TV modes, one player on one system, and a 49.6 GB download. Plan storage before purchasing a digital copy, particularly if your console has other large games installed. The package’s portability is the Switch 2 version’s defining advantage: you can continue the same campaign away from the television without buying a second edition.
What the PS5 version offers
Better fit for a television setup
The cited Push Square review tested the European PS5 Pro version and praised Dark Arisen’s Norgan story, progression systems, boss fights and loot. It criticized the game’s limited enemy variety and said some Lost Rites dungeons feel uneven.
Those observations make PS5 the safer choice for players who prioritize image quality and a conventional home-console presentation. They do not prove that every PS5 model performs identically: the review was specifically on PS5 Pro, and no controlled current-build base-PS5 test is established here.

Expansion ownership is handled differently
If you already own Dragon’s Dogma 2 on PS5, Dark Arisen is an expansion purchase rather than a replacement copy of the base game. A new Switch 2 buyer receives both the original adventure and the expansion in one package. Check the exact edition and region on the store page before buying, especially if you are moving from another platform and want to know whether your existing ownership carries over.
Choose Switch 2 if these trade-offs suit you
- Portability is a priority. Handheld mode lets you play the full campaign and expansion without being tied to a television.
- You want both games in one purchase. The Switch 2 package combines the main game and Dark Arisen.
- You can accept 30 FPS. The underlying target is 30 FPS in both modes; frame generation may look smoother but can show ghosting.
- Longer loads and occasional stutter are acceptable. The launch review specifically notes Pawn-rift and cutscene loading, with choppiness more apparent while docked.
- You value flexibility over maximum image quality. The port is visibly compromised against PS5 Pro, but it delivers the complete adventure in a portable format.

Dark Arisen content and the base-game update
The expansion’s new story takes place partly in Norgan and is supported by new boss encounters, equipment progression and the Lost Rites dungeons. Rare gear gives experienced players reasons to continue exploring after the main campaign, while extra character-creation options help players who want to revise their appearance or build.
Capcom also discussed a free update planned for late August in the PlayStation Blog announcement. The announced features included more save slots, an increase in weapon-skill slots from four to six, and performance improvements. That post described the update prospectively; verify the current patch notes on your platform before assuming every announced change is included in the build you are playing.

Before purchasing
- Decide whether you are buying the complete game or an expansion. On PS5, Dark Arisen extends the existing game; on Switch 2, the two are bundled.
- Check your hardware assumption. The cited PS5 evidence is from PS5 Pro, not base PS5, and the Switch 2 comparison also uses PS5 Pro as its reference point.
- For a digital Switch 2 purchase, reserve at least the 49.6 GB listed on Nintendo’s UK page, plus system overhead and future patches.
- Confirm the regional product listing and edition. Nintendo’s specifications cited here are for the UK page, while the PS5 review is the European edition.
Recommended Switch 2 settings
- Start with variable frame rate, which the launch reviewer preferred over frame generation.
- Enable frame generation only if the smoother-looking motion outweighs your sensitivity to ghosting.
- Use handheld mode when docked stutter is distracting; the review found choppiness more noticeable on a television.
- Expect longer transitions in Pawn rifts and cutscenes rather than treating them as a fault with your individual console.
How to interpret performance complaints
Do not use 2024 launch reports as a direct description of the October 2026 release. Dark Arisen launched after later updates, and the cited Switch 2 reviewer specifically compared the port with the original 2024 PS5 experience as a historical reference. Conversely, do not assume that a PS5 Pro result automatically applies to base PS5. Model, patch and display mode all affect what you see.

Verdict: which version should you play?
Pick Switch 2 if playing anywhere and receiving the base game plus Dark Arisen in one package is worth accepting 30-FPS-targeted performance, occasional choppiness, longer loads and reduced visual detail. It is a meaningful portable version, not a native-60-FPS showcase.
Pick PS5 if you want a home-console experience and the best presentation supported by the available reviews. The evidence is strongest for PS5 Pro, so base-PS5 buyers should keep expectations measured rather than assuming identical performance.
Either choice gives you the same core appeal: demanding action combat, party management, exploration and a sizeable expansion with Norgan, 12 Lost Rites dungeons, new equipment and additional character options. The deciding question is whether portability or presentation matters more to the way you actually play.
