Square Enix says the game content is the same as on Switch, and Switch-version save data cannot transfer. If you are in the middle of a playthrough you want to continue, keep playing on Switch instead.
What does the Switch 2 edition add?
Square Enix lists two selectable modes for the Switch 2 edition: Performance Priority Mode targets 1080p at 60fps, while Quality Priority Mode targets 1440p at 30fps. These are publisher-stated specifications, not independent measurements of performance or image quality. The options let you choose between the stated frame-rate and resolution priorities.

Square Enix says the game content is the same as the Switch version. Nintendo’s listing mentions features such as party-member story chapters, Japanese voices, additional English voices, 3D/2D play and an orchestral score; these are Definitive Edition features, not new additions over the existing Switch version. Nintendo’s UK product listing identifies this as a separate edition compatible only with Nintendo Switch 2.
Can you transfer your Switch save?
No. Square Enix’s official FAQ says Switch-version save data cannot transfer to the Switch 2 version, and its product page also says Switch retail-version saves cannot be carried over. Plan on a separate playthrough rather than an upgrade that continues your existing progress.

When is buying it again worthwhile?
- You want a choice of modes: Consider it if choosing between the publisher-stated 1080p/60fps Performance Priority mode and 1440p/30fps Quality Priority mode matters enough to you to replay the game.
- You are partway through on Switch: If continuing that save matters, finish your current playthrough before considering another purchase.
- You are already satisfied with the Switch version: With the same game content and no save transfer, there is little reason to buy again unless the new modes are compelling to you.
- You do not own a Switch 2: Nintendo lists the Switch 2 edition as Switch 2-only, so it is not a replacement edition for playing on the original Switch.
What does it cost?
Square Enix announced a Japanese release date of September 24, 2026 and a suggested retail price of ¥5,478 including tax. That is a Japan-specific price, not a guide to prices in other regions. Check your local Nintendo or retail store for the price where you live, then weigh it against the appeal of replaying the game and starting a separate save.
