Color alone cannot tell you whether tap water is safe. If water has turned brown, orange, black, or otherwise changed, check for a local water advisory and contact your water utility or health department if the change is new or persists. Until you know what officials advise, don’t rely on boiling or a household filter as a catch-all fix. For laundry, wait until the water runs clear.
What to do first when tap water changes color
- Check for an active advisory. Look at your water utility’s website or alert system and your local health department’s notices. Follow the notice even if the water now looks clear.
- If there is no advisory, report the change. Call your water utility about new or persistent discoloration, especially if it occurs with low water pressure. The CDC advises contacting the utility or health department about water changes; the EPA also recommends calling the water company if you suspect contamination and no advisory has been issued. See the CDC’s guidance on preventing drinking-water-related illness and the EPA’s water decontamination FAQs for customers.
- Use the advisory’s instructions for drinking and food preparation. The words “boil water,” “do not drink,” and “do not use” mean different things; boiling is not a universal remedy.
- Wait on laundry while the water is discolored. Once it runs clear, wash a load of dark clothes first, following any local directions.
- After an advisory ends, follow instructions for flushing plumbing and appliances. Don’t assume a brief run of the tap is enough: the time depends on your plumbing and outlets.
What each water advisory means
The local notice is the authority for an active incident. CDC’s general descriptions explain the distinction between advisory types, but local instructions may include additional steps. Read the CDC overview of drinking-water advisories.

| Advisory | What it addresses | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Boil water | Germs that may cause illness | Use commercially bottled or boiled water for drinking and preparing or cooking food, and follow the notice’s other directions. CDC’s general guidance says to bring water to a rolling boil for one minute, or three minutes above 6,500 feet; follow the local notice for the incident. |
| Do not drink | Possible harmful chemicals or toxins | Use commercially bottled water for drinking and cooking. Boiling does not make water containing harmful chemicals or toxins safe. |
| Do not use | A risk that may make any contact or use dangerous | Do not use tap water for any purpose while the advisory is active. The notice may warn that contact with skin, lungs, or eyes could be dangerous. |
These distinctions matter even when discoloration is the reason you became concerned: appearance does not tell you which hazard, if any, officials are addressing.

Can you drink or cook with discolored water?
Don’t decide based on color alone. The CDC says a change in water’s taste, color, or smell is not necessarily a health concern, but can sometimes signal a problem. A visual check cannot identify a contaminant or confirm safety. If an advisory applies, use the water source and handling instructions specified in that notice. If none appears and the change is unexplained, contact your utility or health department before using the water for drinking or food preparation.

Do not assume boiling will make it safe: boiling is used for germ-related boil-water advisories, not as a general treatment for chemical contamination. A household filter is not a dependable all-purpose answer either. A treatment system must be designed to remove the specific germs or chemicals of concern, and a poorly maintained filter can harbor germs. The CDC explains treatment and testing considerations in its drinking-water guidance.
Can you do laundry with discolored tap water?
Wait until the water runs clear before washing clothes. The CDC’s Drinking Water Advisory Communication Toolbox advises waiting for clear water at the tap and washing a load of dark clothes first. This addresses visible discoloration; it is not a universal laundry ban for every boil-water advisory. CDC’s general boil-water guidance says laundry can be washed as usual during a boil-water advisory, but any local notice takes precedence.

Why might tap water look brown, orange, or black?
Discoloration can have more than one cause, including corrosion or sediment in a distribution system or household plumbing. The EPA associates iron above its secondary standard of 0.3 mg/L with rusty color, sediment, metallic taste, and reddish or orange staining; it associates manganese above its secondary standard of 0.05 mg/L with black-to-brown color, black staining, and a bitter metallic taste. These are U.S. EPA secondary standards for aesthetic effects, not a way to diagnose a particular glass of water or establish that it is safe or unsafe. The EPA lists these effects in its secondary drinking-water standards guidance.
Iron or copper corrosion can also stain fixtures and contribute metallic tastes or red and blue-green colors. Sediment may come from a distribution system or home plumbing. None of these possibilities can be confirmed from color alone, and clear water is not proof that every contaminant is absent.

What if you use a private well?
Public-water customers can check their utility’s alerts and annual water-quality report. If you rely on a private well, you are responsible for arranging tests: the CDC recommends testing at least once a year and considering additional testing when water’s color, taste, or smell changes. Contact your health department or a state-certified laboratory to ask which tests are appropriate; a generic home test or filter does not establish that water is safe. See the CDC’s guidance on private-well testing and water treatment.

Water that looks clear is not, by itself, confirmation that an advisory has ended or that the water is safe. Wait for officials to lift the advisory, then follow their instructions for flushing household plumbing and cleaning appliances. EPA notes that flushing time varies with the service line, indoor plumbing, and outlet, so there is no single duration that fits every home. Its customer FAQ on water decontamination explains why utility-specific directions matter.
