Yes. DirectX’s core runtime is included with Windows, so you do not buy it separately. On Windows 10 and 11, updates for the DirectX components supported by your system come through Windows Update. Some older games may still need optional legacy libraries, which are a separate download and do not upgrade Windows’ DirectX version.
What does “free DirectX” mean?
DirectX is a set of Windows components that lets software—especially games—work with video and audio hardware. Microsoft describes DirectX as part of Windows, rather than a standalone product you need to purchase. The version and features available depend on your Windows release and its supported updates. Microsoft’s DirectX installation guidance explains which update routes apply to different Windows versions.

For Windows 10 and 11, use Windows Update to receive supported DirectX updates. There is no universal standalone installer that upgrades every PC to the newest DirectX version.

How to check which DirectX version is installed
- Open Start and search for
dxdiag. - Launch DirectX Diagnostic Tool. If Windows asks whether to check for digitally signed drivers, choose the option that suits you; it does not change the version check.
- In the System Information section, find DirectX Version.
The result reports the installed DirectX version; it does not tell you whether a particular game’s optional legacy files are present. If updates are available for your Windows installation, get them through Windows Update as described in Microsoft Support’s guidance.

Do you need the DirectX End-User Runtime?
Usually not to update Windows’ core DirectX version. The DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer is for optional, older libraries that some legacy games require. Microsoft lists libraries such as D3DX9/10/11, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and Managed DirectX 1.1. They can be installed alongside newer Windows components.
That distinction matters when a game reports a missing file such as d3dx9_35.dll. A newer version shown in DxDiag does not guarantee that every older optional library is installed. The End-User Runtime can supply supported legacy libraries, but Microsoft says it does not change the DirectX version installed in Windows. The Download Center lists package version 9.29.1974.1, published July 15, 2024; that is the listed package version, not a Windows DirectX version.
Do not download individual DLL files from unrelated sites. Use the Microsoft package or the game publisher’s official instructions, and avoid installing a purported “latest DirectX” package that claims to replace the Windows runtime.

Which installation route fits your situation?
| What you need | Where to get it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Supported updates to Windows’ DirectX components | Windows Update | Updates components supported by your Windows release; does not install every optional legacy library. |
| Optional files needed by an older game | Microsoft DirectX End-User Runtime | Adds legacy libraries side by side; does not upgrade the DirectX version in Windows. |
| Tools to develop Direct3D 12 software | Windows SDK and Visual Studio | Provides the development headers and libraries needed to build Direct3D 12 applications. |
Is DirectX free for developers?
Microsoft says Direct3D 12 headers and libraries are included in the Windows SDK; “There is no separate download or installation required to use Direct3D 12.” For a development setup, install the Windows SDK and Visual Studio. See Microsoft Learn’s Direct3D 12 programming environment setup.
Microsoft distinguishes the operating system’s core runtime from optional libraries used by some older games and applications. Its DirectX installation guidance for game developers also notes that the legacy DirectX SDK is end-of-life and is not recommended for new projects.
