Sony’s US software terms prohibit emulating covered software and bypassing security protections, while US copyright law and a Ninth Circuit case address narrower, fact-specific copying situations. Owning a PS3 disc does not, by itself, settle whether making a game copy, obtaining or extracting a BIOS, or using an emulator is lawful.

Can you play the PS3 version on a PC?
The original Demon’s Souls is a PlayStation 3 game, not an established native PC release in the sources covered here. RPCS3, a PS3 emulator, lists the game as “Playable”; that entry shows an update date of May 4, 2020. RPCS3’s compatibility information can change, so this is a dated project status—not a promise about current hardware, settings, or performance. No game was tested for this article.
The PS5 remake is a separate edition for a different console. The available information does not establish a native PC release or current store availability for that remake.

Does buying a PS3 disc make emulation legal?
No automatic permission follows from buying a disc. A legitimate physical copy may give you possession of that particular copy, but it does not transfer the game’s copyright or create an unlimited right to reproduce its software. Sony’s US Product Software License Agreement says: “All rights to use the Software are granted by license only, and you are not granted any ownership rights, title, or interests in the Software.” The terms are Sony’s license conditions, not a court ruling about every emulator or a complete statement of copyright law.
So a disc purchase and the steps needed to play through an emulator are separate questions. The disc’s legitimacy does not alone establish that a game image or firmware file was lawfully made or obtained, that a particular method of extracting it is permitted, or that a license allows emulation.

What do Sony’s US terms say about emulation?
Sony’s US Software EULA prohibits emulating its covered software, copying it without express prior written consent, and using means to bypass or disable encryption, security, or authentication mechanisms. The page says violation of these conditions immediately voids the license. Sony’s US Product Software License Agreement also describes software use as licensed and restricts copying, unauthorized software or hardware, and circumvention.
These are contractual terms governing covered Sony software. They should not be confused with a court’s decision about the scope of copyright law, and the precise terms applicable to a particular historical PS3 edition may depend on its region and license. What does US copyright law allow when making a program copy?
Section 117(a) of Title 17 of the US Code contains limited allowances for an owner of a copy of a computer program to make or authorize another copy or adaptation. One applies when the new copy is an essential step in using the program with a machine and is used in no other manner. Another concerns a copy made solely for archival purposes, with the archival copy destroyed if continued possession of the program stops being rightful.
Those conditions are specific; §117 is not a general rule that owning a game disc makes any ISO, backup, or emulator setup lawful. The statutory text consulted for this overview is from the 2010 US Code edition, so it should not be treated as a verified statement of current codification. The result for a person’s particular copying method is not established by the statute’s summary alone.

Does the Connectix case make BIOS downloads or dumps legal?
No blanket permission can be drawn from Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. Connectix Corp. The Ninth Circuit case concerned intermediate copying of Sony’s PlayStation BIOS during development of the Virtual Game Station emulator. It is relevant to emulator development and reverse engineering, but it does not decide every consumer’s BIOS download, BIOS extraction method, distribution of BIOS files, or gameplay setup.

The case is jurisdiction-specific and tied to its facts. It should not be reduced to “emulation is legal.” Sony’s US terms separately prohibit means used to bypass or disable specified security mechanisms. Whether a particular BIOS or firmware acquisition method raises legal issues depends on the method, applicable terms, and jurisdiction.

Is there a preservation exception for personal emulation?
The US Copyright Office’s 37 CFR §201.40 includes an exemption for video-game preservation by qualifying libraries, archives, or museums. It allows specified access, copying, or modification for personal local gameplay under stated conditions. It is not a general exemption for private users and does not establish permission for ordinary users to download game or BIOS files.
