Yes. Dell is an American technology company founded in Austin, Texas, in 1984 by Michael Dell. Dell Technologies is headquartered in Round Rock, Texas. Its legal incorporation also moved from Delaware to Texas, effective July 1, 2026—but that was a change in corporate jurisdiction, not a headquarters move.

Where Dell began and where it is based

Michael Dell founded the company in Austin in 1984 while he was a student at the University of Texas. In a May 2026 company announcement, he recalled starting the business in his dorm room and described Texas as both its birthplace and the location of its present headquarters. Dell’s announcement provides that account.

Dell Technologies lists its corporate headquarters in Round Rock, Texas, on its investor FAQ. The company’s American identity is therefore grounded in its U.S. founding and Texas headquarters, not merely in where it sells products.

Founding, headquarters and incorporation are different facts

“Where a company is from” can refer to its origins, its main office, or the jurisdiction under whose corporate law it is organized. Dell’s history illustrates why those answers should not be treated as interchangeable.

Question Dell’s answer
Where was Dell founded? Austin, Texas, in 1984.
Where is its corporate headquarters? Round Rock, Texas.
Where is Dell Technologies Inc. incorporated now? Texas, effective July 1, 2026. It was previously incorporated in Delaware.
Does it operate only in the United States? No. Dell describes itself as a global technology provider.

The Delaware reference is accurate for much of Dell Technologies’ earlier public-company history, and older filings may still reflect it. It is no longer the current state of incorporation: a July 1, 2026 SEC filing says the conversion to a Texas corporation took effect at 12:01 a.m. Central Time that day.

What the 2026 change did—and did not—do

The change is sometimes easy to mistake for a relocation. It was not. Dell’s SEC filing says the conversion changed the company’s state of incorporation and that Dell Technologies continued as a Texas corporation, with its internal affairs governed by Texas law. The filing also says the change did not alter its headquarters, business, jobs, management, offices, facilities, operations, obligations or assets.

How Dell evolved beyond its PC beginnings

Dell’s public image is closely associated with personal computers, but the company now presents itself as a global provider of hardware, software and services. Its investor FAQ describes that broad role, while its fiscal 2024 Form 10-K discusses IT infrastructure, multicloud operations, workforce transformation and connected organizations, as well as infrastructure solutions related to AI.

A major milestone in that evolution was the merger of Dell Inc. and EMC Corporation, which closed on August 2, 2016, according to the investor FAQ. Dell Technologies’ Class C common stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol DELL on December 28, 2018.
