Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDead by Daylight is worth playing if you want a repeatable online horror game and are willing to learn in matches against other people. The safest way to start is to buy the base game, try its online play and Custom Games, and add a chapter only when you specifically want its character or exclusive items. You do not need every chapter to access the maps, because Behaviour says maps remain free for all players.
It is a weaker fit if you are looking for a self-contained solo story. Custom Games let a host practice as Killer against up to four Bot Survivors, but that feature is a practice environment, not evidence of a solo campaign or a replacement for human matchmaking.

What you are buying
Dead by Daylight is an online multiplayer horror game built around repeated matches. Its value comes from having another match to learn, improve at, or play with friends rather than from a scripted campaign that ends after a fixed number of hours. You should expect to learn while playing against human opponents, including opponents who already know the maps, characters, and systems better than you do.
The purchase structure is deliberately modular. Behaviour’s official purchase page states that “The purchase of the base game is required to play the DLC characters.” Chapters then add characters and exclusive items. Behaviour’s chapter catalogue also states that “Maps remain free for all players.” In practical terms, the base game is the entry point, while chapters are optional character and item purchases rather than keys to a separate set of paid maps.
#1 Best Overall
- Play as 5 new resourceful Survivors with their own unique Perks!
- Play as 5 new Killers with horrifying Powers that defy logic to hunt your prey!
- Customize your experience with all-new Perks and set-up options!
- Bring the game to life with 10 hauntingly detailed miniature figurines!
That distinction matters when estimating the real cost. Buying the base game gives you access to the core game; buying every chapter is not a prerequisite for joining matches. A chapter is most defensible when you want its particular character or an exclusive item, not because you fear being locked out of a map.
Is Dead by Daylight worth playing?
It is a good fit when you want repeatable online play
- You enjoy improving through practice instead of following a fixed story.
- You are comfortable learning in live matches against other players.
- You want the option to play as Killer, practice against bots, or join online matches as the game’s other role.
- You are willing to judge chapters by the characters and items you actually want.
The game’s ongoing model also appears active. The official chapter catalogue listed releases through August 25, 2026, including Chorus of Sin, as of October 13, 2026. That confirms continuing chapter additions up to that date, but it does not establish a future release schedule or guarantee that a particular announced feature will arrive.
It is a poor fit when you want a traditional solo campaign
The official solo-related evidence concerns Custom Games. A host can add up to four Bot Survivors and use the lobby as a low-pressure way to try a Killer. That is useful for learning controls, testing an approach, or becoming familiar with a character before entering matchmaking. It does not show that the game contains a story campaign designed for one player.

Bots also should not be treated as a guarantee of human-like behavior. Behaviour’s announcement from November 2022 described bots as unable to equip Perks at that time. Because that detail may have changed, check the current in-game or official feature description before relying on it. The durable conclusion is narrower: Custom Games provide practice, not a full solo substitute.
How much does Dead by Daylight cost?
The base-game price depends on where you buy it
There is no single worldwide price that can be stated safely. A PlayStation US listing showed a price, but storefront prices vary by platform, country, edition, currency, and sale period. Check the storefront for the platform and region you will actually use immediately before buying. Treat any old price displayed in a guide as historical unless it matches that live listing.
The base game is the mandatory purchase for DLC characters. If you are unsure whether you will stay with the game, buying only the base game limits your initial spend while still letting you test online matches and Custom Games.
What a chapter adds
| Purchase | What the official structure establishes | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Base game | Required to play DLC characters. | Buy this first if you are new or undecided. |
| Chapter | Adds characters and exclusive items. | Buy when you specifically want that chapter’s character or item. |
| Maps | Maps remain free for all players. | Do not buy a chapter merely to obtain map access. |
| Virtual goods | Availability and pricing can change under the game’s terms. | Check the current in-game or storefront information before spending. |
The available evidence does not support a reliable total budget for all chapters or a price ranking between platforms. Sales, regional pricing, editions, and availability make those comparisons temporary. A sensible budget is therefore staged: base game first, then individual chapters selected by interest.
Do you need to buy DLC?
No. You need the base game to play DLC characters, but the chapter catalogue says maps remain free for all players. You can therefore play the core game without purchasing every chapter. This is especially important for a new player: spend enough to discover whether the match-based format suits you before adding optional content.
When a chapter purchase makes sense
- You want to play a particular licensed or original character.
- You want an exclusive item associated with that chapter.
- The chapter is currently available in your region and on your platform.
- You have already confirmed that you enjoy the base game’s online loop.
When to wait
- You are buying because you assume a chapter is required for its map.
- You have not yet tried the base game or Custom Games.
- You are choosing solely from an old price list.
- You want a licensed character but have not checked whether that content is still sold.
This is a buying framework, not a claim that one DLC character is stronger or better balanced than another. The official purchase information establishes what chapters contain, not a universal ranking of their gameplay value.
Is Dead by Daylight worth it solo?
What you can do alone
In a Custom Game, the host can add up to four Bot Survivors. Behaviour presented this as a low-pressure way to try a Killer. For a new player, that makes Custom Games useful for learning the interface, experimenting with a Killer, and building confidence before facing human opponents.
- Open the game on your chosen platform.
- Create a Custom Game lobby rather than entering a public matchmaking queue.
- Choose the Killer you want to learn.
- Add Bot Survivors to the lobby; the cited announcement allows up to four.
- Use the match to test movement, abilities, and decision-making without treating the result as a measure of your performance against experienced players.
Menu names and bot behavior can change with updates, so follow the current labels shown in your version. The November 2022 announcement said bots could not equip Perks when the feature was introduced; do not assume that remains true without a current confirmation.
What Custom Games do not prove
- They do not establish the existence of a solo story campaign.
- They do not guarantee that bots are available in every queue or mode.
- They do not reproduce the unpredictability, communication, or strategy of human opponents.
- They do not replace online matchmaking if your goal is to play the game as a competitive multiplayer experience.
If “solo” means “I want to practice privately before playing online,” the game has a useful on-ramp. If it means “I want dozens of hours of authored single-player content,” the documented feature does not support that expectation.
Platforms, cross-play expectations, and cross-progression
Behaviour’s support FAQ lists Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 as participating platforms for cross-progression. You link the relevant platform accounts through a Behaviour Account.

Switch-specific limitations
| Question | Documented limitation | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Are Nintendo Switch Auric Cells shared? | No. The FAQ says Nintendo Switch Auric Cells cannot be shared. | Do not assume currency bought on Switch will appear on another platform. |
| Can DLC move between platforms? | DLC can be shared from other platforms to Switch, but Nintendo eShop DLC cannot be shared from Switch to other platforms. | Consider where you buy a chapter if you plan to play on more than one system. |
| Can syncing be reversed? | The FAQ says account syncing cannot be undone. | Review the accounts and purchases carefully before confirming. |
| Do achievements and trophies transfer? | They remain platform-specific, with limited exceptions. | Do not expect one platform’s achievement record to become complete on another. |
A safer cross-progression setup
- List every platform on which you expect to play.
- Identify where your existing DLC and currency were purchased, paying special attention to Nintendo eShop purchases.
- Confirm that each platform account is the one you intend to connect to your Behaviour Account.
- Read the current support FAQ immediately before syncing, because account linking and sharing rules can change.
- Only confirm after checking the irreversible-sync warning and understanding what will and will not carry over.
Cross-progression is valuable if you move between a console and PC, but it is not a reason to buy duplicate DLC blindly. The Switch restrictions can make the purchase platform itself part of the decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Licensed chapters can disappear
Licensed content is not guaranteed to remain purchasable forever. Behaviour announced that the Halloween chapter featuring The Shape and Laurie Strode would stop being unlockable on January 19, 2026. Content that players had already unlocked remains playable, while Haddonfield was removed from the map pool.
This is a concrete warning for anyone buying because of a specific licensed character: check current availability before assuming you can purchase it later. It is not evidence that another named chapter will be removed, and it should not be turned into a prediction about the entire catalogue. Availability is a time-sensitive fact tied to the particular license and platform.
How to choose your starting purchase
| Your situation | Recommended starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You have never played | Base game only | Tests the online format and Custom Games before optional spending. |
| You want to practice privately | Base game, then Custom Games | Bot Survivors provide a low-pressure Killer practice option. |
| You already know the character you want | Base game plus that available chapter | Chapters are character and exclusive-item purchases; verify availability first. |
| You play on several systems | Choose the primary storefront, then review cross-progression rules | Syncing is irreversible and Switch sharing has special restrictions. |
| You dislike competitive online learning | Do not buy on the assumption of a solo campaign | The documented solo feature is practice against bots, not a story mode. |
A practical first-week plan
Day one: establish the baseline
- Buy the base game from the storefront for your intended platform, checking the live regional price and edition.
- Launch the game and confirm that online play works on your account and network.
- Enter a Custom Game and add Bot Survivors to learn the Killer controls without the pressure of a public match.
- Play several public matches only after you understand the basic interface; expect early losses while you learn.
After you know what you enjoy
- Write down which character or exclusive item actually interests you.
- Check whether the relevant chapter is currently sold in your region and on your platform.
- Compare the live chapter price with your budget rather than relying on a historical guide.
- Buy one chapter at a time and reassess before adding another.
If you plan to change platforms
- Set up or verify your Behaviour Account before making a major purchase intended for multiple systems.
- Read the current cross-progression FAQ, including the Switch currency and DLC exceptions.
- Confirm that your platform accounts are correct.
- Remember that syncing cannot be undone and that achievements and trophies generally remain tied to their original platforms.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying every chapter before testing the game
The modular catalogue makes this unnecessary. Start with the base game, test matchmaking and Custom Games, and add only the characters or items you want.
Assuming paid chapters unlock paid maps
Behaviour says maps remain free for all players. A chapter purchase should be justified by its characters or exclusive items instead.
Calling Custom Games a solo mode
Custom Games are a bot-supported practice option. Describe them as such, and do not promise a story campaign or human-equivalent opponents.
Trusting an old price
Prices differ by region, platform, edition, and sale. Open the target storefront at the time of purchase.
Syncing accounts without checking Switch rules
Nintendo Switch Auric Cells do not share, Nintendo eShop DLC does not share outward to other platforms, and syncing cannot be undone. Verify your plan before confirming.
Waiting to buy a licensed character without checking availability
The January 19, 2026 cutoff for The Shape and Laurie Strode demonstrates that licensed content can leave the store. Availability should be checked when the character is the reason for buying.
Who should buy it now?
Buy the base game now if you want an ongoing online horror experience, accept that learning happens in live matches, and value the option to practice as Killer against bots. Add DLC selectively after you know which characters or exclusive items appeal to you.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Hold off if your main requirement is a substantial solo narrative, if you dislike matchmaking with more experienced players, or if you are choosing a chapter only because you think its map is paywalled. In those cases, the documented features do not match the expectation.
The most reliable value judgment is therefore personal and staged: base game first, Custom Games as a low-pressure test, then carefully chosen chapters. Platform plans and licensed-content availability deserve a separate check before you spend more.
