Short answer: Coupang publishes payment safeguards and supports passkey sign-in, but that does not make any account or payment service risk-free. Its 2025 Korea incident also makes the scope important: Coupang said personal information was accessed, while its updates said payment details and login credentials were not involved. Here is what the company disclosed, what its security features do, and practical steps you can take.
Is Coupang safe to use?
Coupang is a legitimate online shopping service, and its published materials describe controls for payment processing, account access, fraud prevention, and data protection. Its privacy notice also describes access controls, encryption of passwords and important data, and encrypted transmission. Those are company disclosures, not an independent security audit or proof that misuse can never happen. Coupang Pay’s privacy notice explains the information it processes and the safeguards it says it uses.

For customers, the practical answer is to use the account protections available to you, monitor orders and payment activity, and treat unexpected messages cautiously. Whether a particular payment option works for you can depend on your region and account; the available information does not establish that cards, bank payments, mobile payments, or Coupay Money are safer than one another.
Is it safe to put my credit card on Coupang?
Coupang Pay says it processes payment and refund information, registered payment methods, transaction details, and information used for fraud prevention and customer support. Its notice lists categories including account and card or bank information, mobile-payment and refund data, access logs, IP addresses, and device information. That describes the company’s stated practices; it is not a guarantee about every transaction or an independent assessment of its security.

If you prefer an extra checkpoint at checkout, review the one-touch payment setting. Coupang’s July 15, 2026 FAQ says one-touch payment can replace a password-entry step with Coupang’s security checks, though additional password checks may still be requested under its criteria. To switch it off in the mobile app, go to My Coupang → All Menus → Payment Methods → Payment Password and Security Settings → One-touch Payment, then choose OFF. How can I secure my Coupang account?
Set up a passkey if your device and account support it
Coupang describes passkeys as FIDO-compliant, passwordless sign-in using public/private key cryptography. Its guide says the public key is stored on Coupang’s servers and the private key on your device. To add one, open the Coupang app and go to My Account → Security and Sign-in → Add Passkey, then authenticate with your device’s biometric check or PIN.

Coupang lists these prerequisites: iOS 16 or later, or Android 9 or later; an active screen lock; and iCloud Keychain on iPhone or Google Password Manager on Android. Passkeys usually transfer when synchronization is enabled and you use the same Apple ID or Google Account. If you stop using a phone that holds a passkey, Coupang recommends erasing the old device. A passkey can help resist phishing, but it does not eliminate every way an account might be compromised. See Coupang’s passkey guide.
Use account and payment checks as routine habits
- Keep your phone’s screen lock enabled and review the app’s security settings periodically.
- Check recent orders and payment activity so you can spot something you do not recognize.
- Open the Coupang app yourself or type the official website address when you need to check an account alert. Do not use an unsolicited message’s link to sign in or provide information.
Was my Coupang account hacked in the 2025 Korea incident?
The incident statements discussed here concern Coupang accounts in Korea; they do not establish the incident’s scope in every other Coupang market. Coupang’s November 29, 2025 statement said it learned on November 18 of unauthorized access involving about 4,500 accounts, then expanded its estimate to about 33.7 million accounts in Korea. The company said names, email addresses, phone numbers, shipping addresses, and some order histories were exposed. It said payment details, credit card numbers, and login credentials were not included. These are Coupang’s statements, not an independent regulator’s conclusion. Read Coupang’s November 29 statement.

In an update dated December 25, 2025, Coupang described a distinction between data accessed and data retained: it said data associated with 33 million accounts had been accessed, while data from about 3,000 accounts was retained, including 2,609 building entrance codes. Coupang said the retained data was later deleted and not transferred to others, attributing those findings to its investigation, forensic work, and the perpetrator’s sworn statements. Those claims should be understood as the company’s account of its investigation, not an independently established finding. Read Coupang’s December 25 update.
On April 20, 2026, Coupang announced an identity-verified tool for customers to look up individual exposure details and said it would be available through June 20, 2026. That announced availability period has passed; the notice does not establish whether another lookup process is now available. Check Coupang’s current official support channels for present options. What should I do if I see an order I did not place?
- Open Coupang directly through its app or by typing the official website address. Do not follow an unexpected email or text link to investigate.
- Review the order and payment details in your account.
- Contact Coupang customer support through the app or official site. Coupang’s payment FAQ directs customers with an unrecognized order to support. See Coupang’s order and payment FAQ.
Coupang warned in its November 2025 incident statement about communications impersonating the company. Treat urgent or unexpected requests for credentials, payment details, or action through a link with caution, even if the message uses Coupang’s name.

Coupang’s November 29, 2025 statement said payment details, credit card numbers, and login credentials were not exposed. Its December 25 update likewise said payment and login data were not accessed in the incident it described. These are dated statements from Coupang about the Korea incident; they are not a guarantee about all users, all periods, or other markets.
