Is Company of Heroes 3 Worth Buying for Solo and Multiplayer Players?

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Company of Heroes 3 is worth buying on PC if you primarily want tactical real-time battles, faction-based multiplayer, co-op, or replayable skirmishes. The recommendation is more qualified for a solo-first buyer: it includes two campaigns, but the Italian dynamic campaign’s strategic map has been criticized for passive opposition and uneven polish. Console versions remain playable, yet Relic ended routine console updates in 2024, making PC the safer platform for ongoing support.

This assessment reflects the game and public information available in October 2026. Steam’s English reviews were 62% positive overall and 56% positive among recent reviews in a snapshot captured on October 13, 2026, so this is not an unqualified recommendation.

Quick verdict by player type

Player profile Verdict Why
Multiplayer or co-op player on PC Recommended, with reservations Four factions, online PvP, online co-op, and battles where positioning, flanking, cover, line of sight, and unit control matter. PC is receiving ongoing support.
Solo player who enjoys tactical battles and skirmishes Generally recommended The real-time combat is the strongest part of the package, and skirmishes provide repeatable battles after or between campaign missions.
Solo player seeking a consistently reactive grand campaign Wait for a sale or more post-launch evidence The Italian dynamic campaign has an ambitious map layer, but reported enemy passivity and launch-polish problems weaken its strategic pacing.
Console player choosing primarily for future updates Buy only if the current console version meets your needs Relic said in 2024 that routine Console Edition updates would end. Server maintenance and critical fixes may continue, but PC and console should not be assumed to have feature parity.
Player wanting a competitive strategy game with a mature balance environment Check the current PC patch and community state first Balance remains an active target, and a substantial PC update was announced for November 5, 2026, after the latest available review snapshot.

What you actually get

Company of Heroes 3 is a World War II real-time strategy game built around short-to-medium tactical engagements rather than a purely economic, build-order-driven format. Its setting covers North Africa and Italy. The product includes two single-player campaigns, skirmish play, online player-versus-player matches, and online co-op. Multiplayer and co-op use four factions: US Forces, British Forces, Wehrmacht, and Deutsches Afrikakorps.

The distinction between the strategic map and the battles matters. On the campaign map, you move forces, manage supply lines, capture or improve locations, and choose which engagements to fight. When armies meet, the game shifts to a real-time battle in which unit placement and timing decide the result. A buyer who enjoys only one of those layers may have a different experience from someone who wants both.

Core tactical systems

  • Flanking and side armor: Armored vehicles are vulnerable from the sides and rear, so simply pointing the strongest gun at an enemy is often less effective than maneuvering around it.
  • Infantry breaching: Infantry can breach garrisons, giving attacks more options than a frontal assault against a fortified building.
  • Elevation and line of sight: High ground, obstructions, firing arcs, and visibility affect which units can engage and how safely they can do so.
  • Combined-arms control: Success depends on coordinating infantry, vehicles, artillery, reconnaissance, and support units instead of treating every unit as an independent damage dealer.
  • Territory and supply: Strategic decisions about routes and supply lines influence which battles you can sustain and how quickly forces can reinforce.

These systems are the main reason to buy the game. They create situations in which a weaker force can win through positioning, timing, and target selection. They also produce a higher learning curve than a strategy game where units can be left unattended for long periods.

How good is the solo content?

Solo buyers receive two campaigns and skirmish modes. The campaigns are not interchangeable: the North African campaign follows a more traditional mission structure, while the Italian campaign uses a larger dynamic strategic map. That ambition gives Italy more freedom, but it also exposes the game to pacing and artificial-intelligence problems that are less visible in a linear mission sequence.

North African campaign

The North African campaign is the safer solo recommendation. It follows a more conventional progression in which missions and objectives provide a clearer rhythm. Players who want to learn the combat systems, experiment with factions, and move through a directed narrative are more likely to find this structure comfortable.

A traditional campaign also makes it easier to understand cause and effect. You complete an operation, receive the next objective, and enter a battle with a defined purpose. That does not make every mission flawless, but it limits the downtime and uncertainty that can arise on a large strategic map.

Italian dynamic campaign

The Italian campaign is the more divisive component. Its map lets you manage forces and supply lines, improve towns, and decide how to approach the theater. In principle, that should make each playthrough more personal than a fixed sequence of missions.

In practice, PC Gamer’s September 16, 2026 interview and retrospective coverage described a strategic layer in which opposing forces often sat back instead of creating constant pressure. The criticism is not that the real-time battles are inherently poor; it is that the map-level enemy behavior can make the campaign feel less active than its design suggests.

Relic CEO Justin Dowdeswell acknowledged the scale problem directly. He said, “We set out to build the biggest Company of Heroes game ever,” and later added, “Yeah, we bit off more than we could chew.” Those remarks explain why the Italian map can feel like an ambitious system that did not reach the intended level of polish at launch. They should not be read as a claim that every mission or battle fails.

The practical buying implication is straightforward: choose the game for its tactical engagements first, not on the assumption that the Italian strategic layer will deliver a relentlessly reactive grand campaign. Players who enjoy experimenting with routes, resources, and force management may still value the map; players who need aggressive enemy responses throughout may be disappointed.

Skirmishes as a solo fallback

Skirmish play gives solo buyers a way to focus on battles without committing to either campaign structure. It is useful for learning faction mechanics, testing how flanking and line of sight work, and creating repeatable matches after the campaign missions are finished.

Skirmishes do not replace a fully authored campaign. They lack the same narrative progression and strategic consequences. Their value is replayability: you can practice a specific faction, adjust the opponent, and concentrate on the tactical systems that form the game’s strongest foundation.

What multiplayer and co-op offer

Multiplayer is the clearest case for buying Company of Heroes 3. The official Steam listing includes online PvP and online co-op, with four factions that provide different unit rosters, abilities, and battlefield priorities. The faction count is large enough to create meaningful matchup variety without requiring a new player to learn an enormous number of armies.

Faction Where it appears What the listing establishes
US Forces Multiplayer and co-op One of the four available multiplayer/co-op factions.
British Forces Multiplayer and co-op One of the four available multiplayer/co-op factions.
Wehrmacht Multiplayer and co-op One of the four available multiplayer/co-op factions.
Deutsches Afrikakorps Multiplayer and co-op One of the four available multiplayer/co-op factions.

The important point is not simply the number four. Faction-based strategy games remain interesting when each army changes how you solve the same battlefield problem. A player who enjoys learning distinct openings, counters, and combined-arms compositions has more reason to return than a player who wants one universally optimal army.

Why the battles suit competitive players

  • Positioning creates comebacks: A well-timed flank or attack on exposed side armor can reverse a fight that looked lost.
  • Terrain matters: Elevation, sight lines, and garrisons reward players who read the map instead of selecting units and sending them directly forward.
  • Team coordination has visible value: In co-op and team PvP, one player can provide suppression, artillery, reconnaissance, or armor support while another exploits the opening.
  • Decision density is high: You constantly choose between reinforcing a threatened position, capturing territory, retreating, or committing to an attack.

There are trade-offs. A player who dislikes real-time pressure, losses caused by a missed flank, or learning matchups may find multiplayer demanding. Match quality also depends on the current player population, matchmaking, balance patches, and the willingness of teammates to coordinate; those variables change over time and are not guaranteed by the feature list.

Planned multiplayer changes

Relic announced PC update 3.0 for November 5, 2026. The announcement described multiplayer balance work aimed especially at larger team games, including economy and artillery changes and efforts to reduce massed-vehicle strategies. It also listed new and refreshed maps, plus visual and audio upgrades and smarter artificial intelligence.

Those are announced features, not benefits that were confirmed as live on October 13, 2026. If you are buying specifically for the update, treat November 5 as the announced target and verify the release status on PC before purchase. Balance changes can improve a game for one play style while disrupting another, so the existence of an update is not by itself proof that every matchup will become better.

What the review scores tell you

Steam’s English-language user reviews were Mixed in the snapshot accessed October 13, 2026: 62% positive across 13,378 reviews. Recent English reviews were also Mixed, at 56% positive across 221 reviews. Both figures are time-stamped platform snapshots, not permanent scores. They can change as patches arrive, more players review the game, and the audience shifts.

The numbers are useful as a warning against a blanket recommendation. They indicate a substantial group of players enjoyed the game, but also a large group had reservations. The qualitative pattern in the available coverage is consistent with the mode split: tactical battles and faction play receive stronger praise than the Italian campaign’s strategic layer and the uneven polish surrounding launch.

There is no independent benchmark in the available evidence that proves how the game performs on a particular graphics card or how its player population will look after the announced update. Use the review scores to set expectations, not to substitute for checking your own platform, preferred mode, and hardware.

PC versus console: which version should you buy?

Consideration PC via Steam PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S
Release and support direction Released February 23, 2023; ongoing PC support, including the announced update 3.0. Remain available and playable, but Relic said in 2024 that it would no longer issue routine Console Edition updates.
Future content Update 3.0 was announced for November 5, 2026. Do not assume parity with the announced PC content.
Maintenance Uses the PC/Steam service and its current patches. Relic said regular server maintenance would continue and critical fixes could be issued if needed.
Best fit Players who want the longest support horizon, current balance work, and future PC features. Players who already prefer console controls or only have a current-generation console and accept a more static version.

Relic’s May 2024 policy statement is the decisive difference. It confirmed that the console edition would remain available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while routine updates would stop. That does not make the console release unplayable; it means buyers should evaluate it as the version currently offered rather than as a platform guaranteed to follow PC development.

For a new buyer who owns both a suitable PC and a console, PC is the safer choice for ongoing changes. For a console-only buyer, the game can still make sense if the existing campaigns, skirmishes, and multiplayer modes are the intended use and the buyer is comfortable with fewer future feature updates.

Update 3.0: what is announced and what is not

The official 3.0 announcement schedules the PC update for November 5, 2026. Listed work includes:

  • Visual and audio upgrades.
  • Smarter artificial intelligence.
  • Multiplayer balance changes, with attention to economy, artillery, larger team games, and massed vehicles.
  • New and refreshed maps.
  • Italian campaign adjustments involving map resources, town upgrades, and enemy attack waves.

As of the authoritative information available on October 13, 2026, the update had not shipped. The Italian campaign adjustments are therefore especially relevant to a buyer deciding whether to wait: they target the same map resources, upgrades, and enemy pressure that have drawn criticism. However, an announced change is not evidence of its final quality. Read post-release notes and player reports if those adjustments are the deciding factor in your purchase.

Hardware, modes, and ownership checks before paying

Steam lists the game’s system requirements, single-player support, online PvP, online co-op, and Steam Workshop on the current product page. The available evidence does not include an independent hardware benchmark, so do not infer expected frame rates from the feature list.

  1. Open the current Steam listing and compare every minimum and recommended requirement with your PC. Pay particular attention to the operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, and storage entries shown for the edition you intend to buy.
  2. Confirm the platform and edition. A console purchase is not a promise of access to PC updates, and physical availability can vary by region, edition, and stock.
  3. Decide whether you need online access. Campaign and skirmish play are solo options, while PvP and co-op require the relevant online service and a stable connection.
  4. Check the current patch state. This is particularly important around the announced November 5, 2026 PC update, when balance and map behavior may change.
  5. Use the store’s current refund and purchase terms. Those terms can vary by platform and region and are separate from the game’s design quality.

The cited evidence establishes that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions exist and that physical launch editions were announced. It does not establish a current price, retailer inventory, regional stock, or eligibility for any particular promotion. Verify those details on the platform store or retailer you plan to use.

Who should buy Company of Heroes 3?

Buy it now if these statements describe you

  • You want tactical real-time battles in which flanking, cover, elevation, and line of sight matter.
  • You expect to play online PvP or co-op and like learning faction matchups.
  • You are happy to use skirmishes as a repeatable solo mode.
  • You are buying on PC and value ongoing balance, map, audio, visual, and artificial-intelligence updates.
  • You can tolerate an Italian campaign map that may feel less reactive than its design promises.

Wait, choose a sale, or skip if these statements describe you

  • You need both campaigns to deliver equally polished strategic experiences.
  • You want a fully reactive grand campaign with constant enemy pressure and little downtime.
  • You are buying on console mainly because you expect regular future content updates.
  • You dislike real-time pressure, multiplayer learning curves, or losses caused by positioning mistakes.
  • You require a verified performance result for your exact PC hardware before purchasing.

Bottom line

Company of Heroes 3 is a conditional yes rather than a universal recommendation. Its best material is the battlefield itself: tactical engagements reward movement, combined arms, terrain awareness, and deliberate unit control, while four factions support substantial multiplayer and co-op variety. Those qualities make the PC version the strongest purchase for players who plan to keep playing online or follow future updates.

Solo buyers should enter with a precise expectation. The North African campaign and skirmishes provide a solid route into the combat systems, but the Italian dynamic campaign’s strategic layer has been criticized for passive opposition and uneven polish. Console buyers should likewise make their decision based on the current release, because Relic ended routine console updates in 2024 even while keeping the versions available and maintaining servers. If those limitations fit your priorities, the game can be worthwhile; if they conflict with the reason you are buying, wait for a sale, reassess after update 3.0 ships, or choose another strategy game.
