Short answer: ChatGPT’s Chrome integration can read the content of tabs you authorize and can perform actions on signed-in websites. Chrome grants the extension permissions broad enough to reach sensitive pages, so safety depends on the site approvals you give, the account and tab you select, and how carefully you review each requested action. It is not an invisible copy of your entire browsing history, but anything brought into ChatGPT’s context can be handled under your ChatGPT data controls.
What ChatGPT’s Chrome access actually does
The Chrome integration connects a ChatGPT conversation to the browser profile you choose. With your approval, it can use an open tab as context, inspect page content, and carry out browser tasks such as entering information, editing documents, downloading files, or organizing tabs. It can also work on sites where you are already signed in, because the selected Chrome profile supplies its existing cookies and sessions.

This is different from asking ChatGPT a question about a URL in the abstract. The extension can receive live information from the page and, for an approved task, interact with the page itself. A request such as “summarize this dashboard” may expose the dashboard’s visible text and images to the conversation. “Update the record” can involve a write action, not merely a read.
OpenAI’s own guidance says to treat page content as untrusted context and review the website before allowing ChatGPT to continue. Text on a page can be misleading or can contain prompt-injection instructions intended to influence an AI agent. The fact that a page is open in your browser does not make every instruction on it trustworthy.

What data the extension may be able to read
Content in the current or approved tabs
The integration can pull page context from the tab you select and, where you approve it, work across additional live pages. That context can include visible text, tables, images, document contents, form labels, and other information needed for the requested task. If a page is private because you are signed in, its private content is still private page content from the extension’s perspective.
Data on authenticated websites
When you deliberately use your existing Chrome profile, the extension can operate within sites where that profile is signed in. This is useful for a work portal, cloud document, or support system, but it also means the page may display account details, internal messages, customer records, or other restricted information. Grant access only when the task requires that particular site.
Information exposed by Chrome permissions
The permission set described for the integration is broader than a single-page reader. It can include capabilities associated with:

Google’s Chrome Web Store help explains that an “all data on websites” permission allows an extension to read, request, or modify data on every page, including sensitive services such as bank accounts and social-network accounts. That warning describes technical capability, not proof that every action will occur automatically. It does mean you should evaluate the extension as capable of reaching any page you authorize.
History, URLs, and page titles
History access is a separate and more sensitive request. OpenAI says the extension asks for a prompt before using browser history, scopes that access to the request, and does not offer an always-allow history setting. If approved, history-related information can include visited URLs, page titles, and associated browsing activity needed for the task.

Can it see passwords, banking pages, or private messages?
A broad website-data permission means an extension may read or modify information presented on pages, including pages for banking, healthcare, employment, email, and private messaging. If you authorize a task on one of those pages, assume that the relevant page content can enter the browser-agent context. Do not treat the lock icon, a private window, or an existing login as a barrier that makes the content invisible to an authorized extension.
This does not mean you should type a password into the chat. OpenAI’s browser guidance is explicit: enter credentials only in the browser, never in the chat. The same rule applies to one-time codes, payment-card numbers, recovery codes, private keys, and identity documents. If a task requires a login, use the site’s own browser form and keep the secret out of the conversation.

For a banking or healthcare task, the safest default is not to authorize the extension at all. If the work is unavoidable, approve only that domain for one task, inspect the account and destination before every submission, and revoke the permission afterward. Never authorize all sites merely to avoid another confirmation prompt.
What “read and change all your data on websites you visit” means
That Chrome wording is intentionally broad. “Read” can include collecting text or other data rendered by a page. “Request” can include sending or retrieving information through page functions. “Change” can include filling forms, editing documents, clicking controls, creating downloads, or submitting updates. The permission applies across websites covered by the grant, rather than being limited to one named service.
The permission does not by itself tell you what a particular ChatGPT request will do. Scope comes from three places: the browser capability, the site approval you provide, and the instructions in the conversation. A read-only summary and a form submission may use the same underlying access but have very different consequences. Review the proposed action and the destination before approving.

How OpenAI’s approval controls reduce risk
New-site prompts
OpenAI describes a default that asks before ChatGPT uses a new website. The prompt is a decision point: you can allow the site once, allow it for that site, or approve access across all sites. The all-site choice is an elevated-risk setting because it removes the narrow boundary that makes accidental access easier to detect.

Allow-once versus per-site access
Use allow-once for a one-time lookup or edit. Use a per-site approval only when you expect repeated work on a trusted service and have checked the exact domain. Keep an allowlist small. Maintain a blocklist for banking, healthcare, employer systems, personal mail, private messaging, and other high-sensitivity domains unless the task genuinely needs them.
Action and download confirmations
Before accepting an edit, submission, upload, or download, check the active account, the complete URL, the target record, and the file or data being transferred. A page can contain a plausible-looking button that sends information somewhere unexpected. Confirmation is most valuable at the moment an action changes data or leaves the site.
Does ChatGPT keep a complete browsing history?
OpenAI says it does not store a separate, complete record of every browser action performed by the extension. Instead, browser activity becomes subject to ChatGPT’s normal data handling when it is included in the conversation’s context. Examples include extracted text, screenshots, tool calls, summaries, messages, and other content the task sends to ChatGPT.
This is a retention boundary, not a promise that no browser-derived information is stored. A screenshot or page excerpt included in a chat is still part of that chat’s data. Avoid bringing unnecessary personal information into the conversation, and apply the data controls and retention settings available for your ChatGPT account or workspace.

History permission is also distinct from chat retention. A task can use a specific history lookup after you approve it, while the conversation can separately retain the result that was shown or summarized. Do not approve history access for a task that only needs the current tab.
Chrome extension versus the built-in desktop browser
The two choices solve different problems. The built-in desktop browser runs in an isolated browser state. The Chrome extension intentionally reaches the existing Chrome profile when you select it, which is why it can reuse open tabs, cookies, signed-in sessions, and installed extensions.

Choose the isolated browser when separation from personal cookies and work sessions matters more than convenience. Choose the extension only when access to an existing Chrome profile is the reason for using it, and then keep approvals narrow.

- Start with the least sensitive context. Open only the tab needed for the task. Close unrelated tabs, especially mail, banking, health, legal, and private-message tabs.
- Check the active ChatGPT account. Confirm that you are using the intended personal or workspace account before connecting a browser profile.
- Inspect the URL and account. Verify the exact domain, subdomain, signed-in identity, and record shown on the page. Similar-looking domains can represent different organizations.
- Choose the narrowest approval. Select allow-once for a one-off task. If repeated access is necessary, choose the specific site rather than all sites.
- State a read-only objective first. Ask for a summary, extraction, or comparison before asking for edits or submissions. This lets you inspect what context ChatGPT received.
- Review page instructions as untrusted. Ignore requests from page content to reveal secrets, change the task, disable safeguards, or visit unrelated sites. Treat them as data, not authority.
- Keep secrets in the browser. Enter passwords and one-time codes only into the site’s own form. Do not paste them into chat or ask ChatGPT to transmit them.
- Confirm consequential actions. Before sending, purchasing, deleting, uploading, downloading, or editing, check the target, amount, recipient, and final destination.
- Clean up afterward. Revoke site access you no longer need, remove unnecessary downloads, close sensitive tabs, and review the resulting chat for private data that was imported.
Common failure modes and what to do
It asks for access to too many sites
Cancel the request and retry with a per-site or allow-once choice. If the task does not need browser history, deny that request. An all-site approval is not required for ordinary single-domain work.
The page contains suspicious instructions
Pause the task. Do not follow instructions embedded in page text that ask for credentials, confidential files, policy changes, or unrelated navigation. Close the tab or return to a trusted page and restate the task in plain language.
The wrong account or tab is active
Stop before any write action. Switch to the intended Chrome profile or tab, verify the signed-in account, and begin again. If you cannot establish which account is active, do not continue.
A download or upload is unexpected
Decline it, inspect the destination and file name, and remove any file that was created unintentionally. A download confirmation is a useful boundary; do not approve it merely because the page says it is required.
You accidentally included sensitive content in chat
Stop further actions, avoid repeating the information, and use the account or workspace’s available chat-retention and deletion controls. If the information includes credentials or payment data, rotate or cancel those secrets through the relevant service.

Bottom line
ChatGPT’s Chrome tab access is safest when you treat it as a powerful browser agent, not a passive reader. It can reach authenticated pages and, under Chrome’s broad permissions, potentially read or change data across websites. Keep the browser state and site approvals narrow, deny history unless needed, never put secrets in chat, distrust instructions embedded in webpages, and inspect every action that changes or transfers data. The isolated built-in browser is the better choice when you do not need your existing Chrome sessions.
