Is ChatGPT Dulling Your Brain? What the Latest Studies Actually Show

There is no convincing evidence that ChatGPT causes general or lasting cognitive decline. Some studies do raise a more specific concern: when people hand off much of the thinking to an AI, they may exert less effort, engage differently with a task, or learn less than their polished output suggests. Other findings show that AI can improve work, and one recent classroom experiment found benefits when AI access was paired with explicit reasoning instruction. The effects depend on the task and how the tool is used; long-term effects remain unresolved.

What does “dulling your brain” mean?

It is a public concern, not a scientific diagnosis. Studies do not all measure the same thing: some assess brain activity during a task, others score essays, test knowledge or transfer, ask participants how much effort they felt they used, or survey workers about their habits. A change in one of those measures is not automatically evidence of lower intelligence or permanent damage.

The key distinction is between producing a better answer now and building knowledge or reasoning ability that remains available later. A tool can improve the first without improving the second. Neither result alone settles what happens to a person’s abilities over months or years.

What did the MIT “Your Brain on ChatGPT” study find?

A 2025 MIT Media Lab preprint by Nataliya Kosmyna and coauthors compared people writing essays with an LLM, with a search engine, or without an external tool. Its abstract reports 54 participants across the first three sessions; 18 participants completed a fourth crossover session. The team used EEG to assess activity during writing and also analyzed and evaluated the essays.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The authors reported the strongest and most widely distributed connectivity in the brain-only group, moderate engagement in the search-engine group, and the weakest connectivity in the LLM group. They also reported that participants using the LLM showed lower essay ownership and had more difficulty quoting their own work.

What the EEG result does—and does not—say

It says that the groups showed different connectivity patterns during this particular essay-writing task. It does not show that ChatGPT damaged anyone’s brain, made participants less intelligent, or permanently reduced their ability to think. EEG connectivity during one task is not a diagnosis or a direct measure of lasting cognitive ability.

The result is preliminary: the study was small, focused on a constrained task, and is a preprint. The smaller crossover group is another reason to be cautious. The finding warrants follow-up, but it cannot establish that ordinary ChatGPT use causes general cognitive decline.

How do other studies compare?

These studies ask different questions and use different populations and methods. Their findings should not be collapsed into one claim about what ChatGPT does to everyone’s brain.

Study and participants Task and design Reported finding What it can establish
Kosmyna et al., MIT Media Lab preprint, 2025: 54 participants in the first three sessions; 18 in the fourth crossover session Essay writing with an LLM, a search engine, or no external tool; EEG and essay measures The abstract reports lower connectivity in the LLM group than in the other groups, alongside lower essay ownership and difficulty quoting one’s own text. A preliminary group difference during this task, not brain damage or lasting cognitive decline.
Fan et al., British Journal of Educational Technology, 2025: 117 university students Randomized comparison of ChatGPT, a human expert, writing analytics, and no extra tool on a writing task The ChatGPT group improved essay scores, while knowledge gain and transfer did not differ significantly. The authors discuss a risk they call “metacognitive laziness.” Short-term essay performance and measured learning were not the same outcome. The authors’ phrase is an interpretation, not a clinical diagnosis.
Lee et al., Microsoft Research / CHI 2025: 319 knowledge workers who used generative AI at least weekly, with 936 reported use examples Survey of real-world work examples; observational and self-reported Participants described critical-thinking work shifting toward checking information, integrating AI responses, and overseeing task execution. How surveyed workers reported their work changing; it does not show that AI caused skill loss.
OpenAI Economic Research, article dated August 27, 2026: more than 1,000 first-year Bocconi University students Randomized experiment involving a business case, GPT-4o access, and a causal-reasoning exercise The article reports that GPT-4o access improved rubric-rated work and coherence; the reasoning exercise was associated with a wider range of ideas; students receiving both showed benefits across multiple measures. Results from this particular classroom task suggest AI support and reasoning instruction can complement one another. They do not answer the long-term question.
“Cognitive ease at a cost,” Computers in Human Behavior, 2024: 91 university students Research on a socio-scientific issue using ChatGPT 3.5 or Google The study reported lower mental effort with the LLM and raised concerns about inquiry depth. A focused result for one sample and task, not a general measure of cognition.

Why better AI-assisted work may not mean better learning

The randomized study of 117 university students makes the distinction concrete: ChatGPT improved essay scores, but the study did not find significant differences in knowledge gain or transfer. A stronger submitted essay is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the writer learned more or can apply the ideas independently.

The Bocconi experiment points to a different possibility. In its business-case task, students who had both GPT-4o access and a causal-reasoning exercise showed benefits across multiple measures. That result does not prove that a particular prompting method will improve learning for everyone, but it suggests that AI assistance need not replace reasoning when the activity explicitly asks students to reason as well.

What is still unknown about long-term effects?

The studies described here do not establish whether regular ChatGPT use causes lasting changes in memory, critical thinking, or independent performance across a broad population. The MIT study measured a constrained writing task; the student experiments assessed specific classroom tasks; and the Microsoft survey relied on workers’ reports rather than a long-term causal comparison.

Other work has examined knowledge retention over a 45-day period and chatbot feedback alongside learning outcomes and brain activity, but detailed outcomes for those studies are not established here. A 2026 systematic review describes mixed findings in critical and creative thinking and points to instructional framing and task design as relevant. These directions add context, but they do not supply a settled long-term answer.

How to use ChatGPT without outsourcing the learning

The studies do not validate a universal “safe” prompt or routine. The following practices are practical ways to keep your own reasoning involved, not interventions proven by these studies to prevent cognitive decline.

  • Try first, then ask. Write down your initial answer, outline, or solution before asking ChatGPT for help. You will have something of your own to compare against.
  • Ask for critique, not a finished substitute. Request questions, counterarguments, or feedback on your draft, then decide which suggestions hold up.
  • Check claims against sources. Treat generated facts as claims to verify. The Microsoft survey found that surveyed workers described checking and integrating AI output as part of their critical-thinking work; it did not show that this habit prevents skill loss.
  • Explain the result without the tool. After using an answer, close it and summarize the reasoning in your own words. If you cannot explain the key steps, you may have a usable output without secure understanding.
  • Match the tool to the goal. If the goal is to learn a concept or practise a skill, keep the difficult thinking in your part of the task. If the goal is to improve a work product, AI assistance may be useful, but a polished result should not be mistaken for proof of learning.

What should readers conclude?

Current evidence supports a conditional concern, not the claim that ChatGPT broadly “dulls” or damages the brain. Some task-specific results point to reduced effort, weaker engagement, or a gap between output quality and learning when substantial work is delegated. Other results show improved work, and the Bocconi classroom experiment suggests that AI support and explicit reasoning practice can work together. Whether repeated use changes cognitive abilities over time remains an open question.
