Yes—Brittle Ice is renewable in Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4. Keep a Blue Ice block in place and repeatedly bring water against one of its sides; the qualifying water block converts into Brittle Ice. Mojang’s snapshot notes also say Brittle Ice can be collected with Silk Touch.
This answer is specific to Java 26.4 Snapshot 4, documented by the Java Team on October 13, 2026. The notes do not establish the same behavior for Bedrock Edition or for a later release, so do not assume parity outside this snapshot.

What “renewable” means for Brittle Ice
In Minecraft, a block is practically renewable when a player can reproduce it indefinitely from repeatable inputs instead of locating a finite natural deposit. Brittle Ice meets that definition in this snapshot because the conversion rule can be used again and again: provide another qualifying water block beside Blue Ice, and it becomes Brittle Ice.
Mojang does not label the block “renewable” in the release notes. The conclusion comes from the documented mechanic. The notes describe no finite charge on the Blue Ice, no one-time use, and no cooldown that would stop repeated conversions. You still need a continuing water supply, a Blue Ice block that remains in position, and a way to harvest or replace the converted blocks.

How the water-to-Brittle-Ice conversion works
The documented trigger
The snapshot description first says Brittle Ice can be created by water flowing onto a Blue Ice block. It then gives the more precise rule: any water block that borders the Blue Ice block horizontally turns into Brittle Ice. In practical terms, the water must occupy a side-adjacent position relative to Blue Ice. The release notes do not describe a top or bottom contact as a valid trigger.
| Condition | What the snapshot establishes |
|---|---|
| Required anchor | A Blue Ice block must be present and remain available for contact. |
| Required input | A water block that borders the Blue Ice horizontally. |
| Result | The qualifying water block changes into Brittle Ice. |
| Repeatability | No finite charge, one-time limit, or cooldown is stated; repeated conversion is therefore a mechanic-based renewable process. |
| Collection | Silk Touch is required to obtain Brittle Ice as a block item, according to the notes. |
What “horizontal” changes in a farm
A farm must expose a side of the Blue Ice to the water. A water stream running above the Blue Ice is not the arrangement described by the rule. Design the contact point so the water block sits directly beside the Blue Ice, then make that water block the one you harvest or allow to convert.

How to make and farm Brittle Ice
Basic manual setup
- Use a Java 26.4 Snapshot 4 world. The documented mechanic is from this Java snapshot, not a confirmed all-edition feature.
- Place Blue Ice. Leave at least one side exposed so water can occupy a horizontally adjacent block position.
- Place or feed water beside it. Arrange the water so the water block borders the Blue Ice on a side. The official wording specifically includes water flowing onto Blue Ice and then defines the qualifying horizontal border.
- Wait for the conversion. The qualifying water block becomes Brittle Ice. No official conversion duration is published, so avoid assuming an exact delay.
- Harvest with Silk Touch. Use a Silk Touch tool if you want the Brittle Ice block item rather than merely triggering its break behavior.
- Restore the water position and repeat. Keep the Blue Ice in place, supply another water block at the same side contact, and run the cycle again.
A practical single-cell layout
The simplest design is a Blue Ice anchor next to a one-block water space. Keep the anchor fixed, make the water space accessible for placement or flow, and leave enough room to stand away from the finished Brittle Ice. This avoids stepping on the product while you work.

For several conversion cells, give each Blue Ice block its own side-adjacent water position. The official notes do not provide a multi-cell blueprint, piston arrangement, collection channel, or tested automation design. A larger layout is therefore a player-built experiment, not an officially documented production standard.
Manual collection versus automation
Manual farming is directly supported by the stated conversion and Silk Touch collection rules. Redstone automation may be possible in principle, but the snapshot documentation supplies neither a tested machine nor timing data. Treat piston timing, water-dispenser layouts, item collection, and any claimed throughput as unverified until you test them in your exact snapshot build.

Natural generation and renewable production are separate routes. Brittle Ice generates naturally only in Ice Caves as part of the crevasse feature, according to the snapshot notes. That means exploration can provide an initial supply, but repeated cave searching is not required once you have a Blue Ice anchor and water.
A farm does not reproduce the Ice Caves feature. It reproduces the block through the water-conversion rule, so a player can move production to a controlled base, mining area, or test world.

Why Brittle Ice cracks when you walk on it
Brittle Ice is intentionally unstable under entities. Mojang states that once a player or mob steps on it, the block starts to crack and eventually breaks. The notes name one exception: the Frostbite mob can walk on Brittle Ice without breaking it.
Build and movement implications
- Do not use it as an ordinary floor. A player or most mobs standing on the block starts the cracking process.
- Protect farm output. Keep collection areas away from paths, spawn points, and mob routes so entities do not consume the product by stepping on it.
- Use it for temporary or hazardous builds. The cracking behavior suits traps, disappearing paths, controlled challenges, and novelty structures where breakage is part of the design.
- Reserve stable ice for routine transport. If a route must survive normal foot traffic, Brittle Ice’s documented behavior makes it a poor default.
The sources do not publish a cracking duration or durability value. You cannot reliably schedule a trap or platform around a specific number of seconds from the current documentation.

The established ice-farming chain is different from Brittle Ice’s conversion. Minecraft Wiki material cited for the ice chain describes regular ice as the harvest source, packed ice as craftable from regular ice, and Blue Ice as craftable from packed ice. The cited material does not describe Brittle Ice as a crafting ingredient or as an alternative recipe for packed or Blue Ice.
| Block | Acquisition route established here | Silk Touch information | Entity stability information | How it relates to Brittle Ice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular ice | Harvested for the established ice-farming chain. | Not stated in the cited material. | Not stated in the cited material. | Acts as the starting material for packed ice in the established chain, not as a documented Brittle Ice input. |
| Packed ice | Crafted from regular ice. | Not stated in the cited material. | Not stated in the cited material. | Used in the established route toward Blue Ice; no Brittle Ice recipe is documented. |
| Blue Ice | Crafted from packed ice in the established chain. | Not stated in the cited material. | Not stated in the cited material. | Serves as the conversion anchor: horizontally bordering water becomes Brittle Ice. |
| Brittle Ice | Natural generation in Ice Caves’ crevasse feature, or conversion from a horizontally adjacent water block beside Blue Ice. | Obtainable with Silk Touch. | Players and mobs cause cracking and eventual breakage; Frostbite is exempt. | Not documented as a crafting ingredient for the other ice blocks. |
This distinction matters when planning resources. A regular-ice farm supports the packed-ice and Blue-Ice chain, while a Brittle-Ice farm requires Blue Ice as its fixed conversion surface and water as its repeatable input.

Java 26.4 Snapshot 4
All confirmed mechanics in this article come from the Java Snapshot 4 documentation published October 13, 2026. In that version, Brittle Ice is a new block found in Ice Caves, has the horizontal water-conversion rule, can be collected with Silk Touch, and cracks under players and most mobs.

Bedrock Edition
No Bedrock behavior is established by the supplied snapshot notes. Do not assume that a Bedrock world has Brittle Ice, the same Ice Caves generation, the same water conversion, or the same Silk Touch behavior. Verify against Bedrock-specific release notes before designing a Bedrock farm.
Later Java releases
Snapshot mechanics can change before a full release. A later Java version may retain, modify, or remove the conversion rule. If you update a world or publish a farm tutorial, identify the exact version tested rather than presenting Snapshot 4 behavior as permanent.

The water stays water
- Confirm the world is running Java 26.4 Snapshot 4 or another version that explicitly documents the mechanic.
- Check that the anchor is Blue Ice, not regular ice or packed ice.
- Check the geometry: the water block must border the Blue Ice horizontally, on a side.
- Remove intervening blocks. A diagonal water position or a gap is not the documented border condition.
- Do not rely on an assumed conversion timer. The notes publish no rate, so test the arrangement without treating a delay as a guaranteed value.
The block disappears while I build
That is consistent with the documented behavior if a player or mob steps on it. Build from the side, keep entities off the new block, and use Silk Touch when collecting it as an item.

The farm works once but not repeatedly
Inspect whether the first conversion removed the only accessible water position or left the Blue Ice without a replacement contact. The renewable cycle requires the Blue Ice to remain available and another qualifying water block to be supplied. The official notes do not specify a self-resetting machine, so a manual reset or custom redstone solution may be necessary.
What the documentation does not establish
Several useful engineering details are not published for Brittle Ice in Snapshot 4:
- No conversion tick rate or guaranteed delay.
- No cracking duration after an entity steps on the block.
- No production-rate, throughput, or blocks-per-hour figure.
- No official redstone farm blueprint or tested automation design.
- No confirmed Bedrock Edition implementation.
- No documented crafting recipe that uses Brittle Ice, or that substitutes it for regular, packed, or Blue Ice.
These omissions do not invalidate the renewable conclusion. They define its limits: the mechanic is documented, but optimized farm performance and cross-edition behavior are not.
Verdict
Brittle Ice is renewable in Minecraft Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4. Place Blue Ice, make water border it horizontally, collect the resulting Brittle Ice with Silk Touch, and repeat the water cycle. Natural Brittle Ice remains limited to Ice Caves’ crevasse feature, while farm production can continue at a base. Design around its cracking behavior, and treat Bedrock, later releases, output rates, and automation layouts as unconfirmed until separately documented.
