Blood Dungeon turns survivor-like collecting and weapon growth into fast 2D platforming. Its strange characters, quick action and unlocks make the early runs inviting; the main question is whether that variety lasts once the familiar loop sets in. Console Creatures reviewer David Pietrangelo scored it 8/10 after playing the PC version, praising its energy and oddball style while finding the core loop repetitive over time.
What kind of game is Blood Dungeon?
Messhof describes Blood Dungeon as a “feverish bullet heaven platformer from the creators of Nidhogg.” Rather than holding position in an arena, you run, jump and climb through 2D stages while monsters close in. Defeated enemies spill blood that powers your character; chests and arena drop sites add weapons and other tools, while bone tolls paid to the Dogmancer unlock permanent upgrades. It released for PC on August 25, 2026, with Windows and macOS versions listed on Steam.

How do the runs and unlocks work?
Each run is a compact attempt to build power, survive a crowded stage and make progress toward more options. Steam lists nine unlockable characters with different traits and weapons, six survival arenas, more than 100 enemy types, more than 100 quests, and more than 100 unlockable weapons and upgrades. Those are features and counts advertised on the store listing, not independently verified totals.

Pietrangelo describes the starting character flailing their arms while firing an automatic machine gun, alongside unlockable fighters using weapons and abilities such as a shotgun, webs, a whip or a fart attack. The reviewer also highlights unusual enemies and bosses. The presentation leans into comic grotesquerie rather than conventional heroic fantasy.

What makes it stand out—and what wears thin?
The strong start
Pietrangelo’s review praises the way survivor-like collecting and leveling are fitted into a platformer’s movement. Running, jumping and climbing give the action a different rhythm from a stationary or top-down arena, while the offbeat character designs help each unlock feel like an invitation to experiment. The reviewer found early attempts short and easy to restart, with characters, stages, weapons and abilities offering reasons to try another run.
The repetition problem
The same basic loop can become familiar: collect, grow stronger, evade crowds and try again. Pietrangelo says that after unlocking a large portion of the content, including all playable characters, the urge to continue faded. The issue is not a lack of listed content so much as whether the run-to-run action remains satisfying after the discovery of new options slows. Players who enjoy repeating a strong core loop may stay engaged longer; those who need each session to change substantially may be less persuaded.

How long are runs, and how does it control?
In Pietrangelo’s sessions, early runs often lasted 10 minutes or less. After roughly six hours of play, the reviewer could survive a few minutes longer on most stages. These are that reviewer’s reported experiences, not typical-playtime estimates or a guarantee of how long a run will last for someone else.

Who should play Blood Dungeon?
Blood Dungeon is a good fit if you want a survivor-like game whose movement is built around platforming, enjoy deliberately strange humor and designs, and find replaying short runs rewarding. Its plentiful listed unlocks provide room to experiment, but they do not remove the repetition Pietrangelo experienced after much of the content was opened up. The 8/10 Console Creatures review reflects that balance: inventive and energetic, with a loop that may lose some pull once novelty and unlocks taper off.
