It remains an active publishing format and a part of many companies’ marketing. But starting a blog no longer guarantees search traffic, an audience, or income. Whether it is worth doing depends on what you want it to achieve, who you are trying to reach, and how you will get your work in front of them.
What “blogging is dead” gets wrong
A blog is a way to publish information online, often as a series of articles. WordPress.org describes blogging as “regular sharing of information in the form of blogs on the internet” (WordPress.org’s blog overview). That format has not disappeared. What has changed is the assumption that publishing a post will automatically bring readers or pay for itself.
Blogging is best understood as one way to create and organize useful content—not as a guaranteed traffic source or business model. A blog can support a company, answer an audience’s questions, document expertise, or serve as a personal archive. Those uses can remain worthwhile even as discovery habits change.
What the available evidence says about blogs in 2026
Companies continue to use blogs
In HubSpot’s 2025 State of Blogging survey, 65% of surveyed marketers said they worked at companies that maintained blogs. Among that subset, 93% rated blogging important or very important to their marketing strategy. These are survey responses from marketers, not a census of businesses or proof that every company benefits from blogging (HubSpot’s 2025 State of Blogging report).

Some marketers report improved returns, but it is not a promise
HubSpot also reported that 50% of surveyed marketers saw better blogging ROI in 2024 than in the previous year. That is a self-reported comparison by survey respondents. It does not establish that all blogs are profitable, that blogging outperforms other channels for every organization, or that a new blog should expect the same result.
Interest in the word “blog” has declined, but that is not the same as readership
HubSpot’s June 2025 article describes a steady decline in search interest for the term “blog” over the preceding five years (HubSpot’s analysis of whether blogging is dead). That trend measures interest in a generic search term; it does not measure all visits to blog posts, demand for specific topics, or readership across the web.

Publishing infrastructure remains active
WordPress.com’s 2025 article, updated in August 2026, documents the platform’s continued scale (WordPress.com’s discussion of blogging’s future). A large, active publishing platform shows that blogging infrastructure is still in use. It cannot tell you whether a particular new blog will find readers.
Why blogging feels harder now
Blogs compete for attention with social platforms and AI tools that answer questions directly. WPBeginner’s January 2026 discussion identifies these as reasons people question blogging’s relevance (WPBeginner’s discussion of blogging in 2026). These alternatives affect where people discover information, but their presence does not show that they have replaced blogs for every purpose.

For a blogger, the practical shift is from “publish and wait” to thinking about both the usefulness of each piece and its distribution. A post might reach its intended readers through search, social media, email, or a relevant community. Which channels make sense depends on the audience; there is no universal growth formula established by the evidence here.

Decide based on the job you need the blog to do. A blog may be a sensible choice when you can serve a defined audience with useful material and have a realistic plan to reach that audience. It is a weaker bet if the plan is simply to publish generic posts and assume that search engines or advertising will produce traffic and income.

- Goal: Be clear whether you want to answer readers’ questions, support a business, document expertise, or create a personal archive.
- Audience and discovery: Find out where your intended readers look for information—search, social channels, email, communities, or a mix. Falling interest in the word “blog” does not tell you whether people seek your subject.
- Distinctiveness: Ask what you can contribute that a reader cannot get from a generic summary: original experience, useful reporting, or a specific point of view. The sources identify competition, but do not establish a guaranteed formula for ranking or growth.
- Business case: Track the blog’s own costs and outcomes rather than treating survey averages as a forecast. No reliable general timeline to profitability is established, so do not plan around a promised date or income.
- Resilience: Consider ways to reach readers beyond a single discovery channel. Search and social habits can shift; using more than one channel is a practical risk-management choice, not a guarantee of traffic.
What to conclude from big blogging numbers
WPBeginner reports estimates of more than 700 million blogs and more than 2.7 billion posts annually. Those figures are publisher-reported estimates, and the cited discussion does not establish their underlying dataset or definitions. They should not be treated as definitive market measurements. Even if a count is accurate, the number of blogs or posts would show publishing activity—not how many attract an audience or earn money.
The practical verdict
Blogging is alive as a format, but “having a blog” is not itself a strategy. Treat it as a way to publish work for a particular reader and purpose; then assess whether the results justify the effort. The survey evidence shows continued organizational use and reported value for some marketers, while declining generic search interest and competing channels make automatic discovery an unsafe assumption.
