Rodriguez and Colombo’s 2025 study finds that Bitcoin rises after an unexpected increase in U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation, but the result depends on the inflation measure, the period studied and the market regime. It does not appear with Core Personal Consumption Expenditures (Core PCE) inflation in Rodriguez and Colombo’s study, and the relationship is concentrated in earlier years.
An inflation hedge should help preserve purchasing power across inflation regimes, not merely rise for a short time after one data release. On that broader test, gold has more persistent evidence. Bitcoin also behaves like a risk-sensitive asset: its links with equities and monetary policy have strengthened, and crypto-market spillovers increase during turbulent, risk-off periods. Those characteristics can produce large losses precisely when diversification is most valuable.

What “inflation hedge” really means
Inflation reduces what a unit of currency can buy. A genuine hedge would therefore tend to preserve real purchasing power over the period in which prices rise. That is a stronger standard than a positive one-day or one-month return after an inflation announcement.

The available evidence on Bitcoin mainly tests short-run reactions to either expected inflation or an inflation surprise. An expected change is already reflected in prices before the release. A surprise is the difference between the published number and what markets anticipated. These are different economic events, so a result for one cannot automatically be applied to the other.

Results also vary by index. Headline CPI includes food and energy, while Core PCE excludes food and energy and is the Federal Reserve’s preferred gauge for underlying inflation. A Bitcoin response to a CPI surprise is not evidence that it protects against every form of inflation, in every country or over every holding period.
What the main studies found
Inflation expectations: limited support
Smales, published in Accounting & Finance on 16 November 2023, examined Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency returns against changes in U.S. inflation expectations and compared the results with gold. Positive relationships appeared only in limited circumstances, particularly for short-term expectations and when expected inflation was below the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Gold’s relationship was more robust.
This finding does not say that Bitcoin never rises during inflation. It says that the link is conditional rather than a dependable response that investors can rely on in every inflationary environment.
Inflation surprises: CPI worked, Core PCE did not
Rodriguez and Colombo’s 2025 study used vector autoregression models and monthly data from August 2010 through January 2023. Rodriguez and Colombo identified surprises in U.S. CPI and Core PCE announcements. Bitcoin returns increased after positive CPI surprises, but the same response did not hold for Core PCE surprises.

The CPI effect was concentrated in the earlier part of the sample and weakened after COVID-19. Rodriguez and Colombo’s conclusion is appropriately narrow: “Bitcoin is, at best, a context-specific inflation hedge.” The result is evidence of a reaction to one type of unexpected news, not proof of durable purchasing-power protection.
Macroeconomic news: an unusual early-sample result
Benigno and Rosa’s New York Fed Staff Report 1052, published in February 2023, used intraday event-study data. In that sample, Bitcoin was orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news, unlike other U.S. asset classes. In practical terms, its short-window movements did not show a consistent response to the scheduled news events examined in that sample.
This does not conflict with the CPI-surprise result. The CPI-surprise and New York Fed analyses use different data frequencies, event definitions and samples. It does show why one headline about Bitcoin “beating inflation” cannot represent all macroeconomic conditions.

IMF Working Paper 23/163, dated 4 August 2023, identified a crypto factor that explained 80% of variation in crypto prices. It also reported increasing equity correlation as institutional participation grew and found that Federal Reserve tightening reduced the crypto factor. These findings connect Bitcoin’s performance to liquidity, interest rates and investor risk appetite, all of which can overwhelm an inflation narrative.
Why the inflation measure and period change the answer
| Question | What the evidence indicates | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Does Bitcoin rise when CPI rises? | Bitcoin rose after positive, unexpected U.S. CPI shocks in Rodriguez and Colombo’s monthly model. | A response to every CPI release, or protection against inflation over a complete investment horizon. |
| Does Bitcoin respond to Core PCE? | Rodriguez and Colombo’s study did not find the CPI-style response after Core PCE shocks. | That Bitcoin can never react to Core PCE or other inflation measures. |
| Do inflation expectations matter? | Smales found positive relationships only in limited cases, especially short-term expectations below the 2% target. | A universal relationship at high or persistently rising expected inflation. |
| Does the result persist? | The CPI effect was concentrated in earlier years and weakened after COVID-19. | That pre-institutional-adoption results describe today’s market regime. |
| Is Bitcoin independent of macro risk? | The New York Fed event study found orthogonality to monetary and macro news in its sample, while later IMF work documents equity and policy sensitivity. | One of these findings can be generalized to every period or frequency. |
Institutional adoption is an important dividing line. The market in the early part of the 2010–2023 sample was different from the market after broader institutional participation. A relationship that appears in one regime can disappear when ownership, liquidity and the dominant investors change.
Bitcoin versus gold as an inflation hedge
Gold is the relevant benchmark because Smales’s comparison and Rodriguez and Colombo’s study find a stronger or more persistent relationship between gold and inflation measures. That does not make gold risk-free or guarantee a positive return. It means the empirical record in these comparisons is more consistent.
| Dimension | Bitcoin | Gold |
|---|---|---|
| Inflation surprises | Positive response reported for unexpected U.S. CPI shocks, not Core PCE shocks, with the effect concentrated in earlier years. | More persistent inflation relationship in the cited comparisons. |
| Inflation expectations | Positive only in limited circumstances, notably some short-term expectations below the 2% target. | More robust relationship in Smales’s comparison. |
| Regime stability | Results vary across pre- and post-COVID periods and around institutional adoption. | Evidence is comparatively steadier in the cited studies. |
| Equity and policy sensitivity | IMF Working Papers 23/163 and 23/213 report increasing equity correlation and a negative effect from Federal Reserve tightening on the crypto factor. | The sources cited here do not quantify equivalent relationships for gold. |
| Risk-off diversification | Crypto-financial spillovers and correlations increase during turbulence, weakening diversification when markets fall together. | The sources cited here do not provide a matching spillover estimate for gold. |
| Volatility and drawdown risk | A positive average reaction can coexist with severe interim losses; the cited analyses do not provide a guaranteed safe holding period. | Gold also fluctuates, but the cited evidence supports a more established inflation-hedging role. |
The comparison is about the evidence for inflation protection, not a recommendation to buy either asset. Implementation issues such as custody, fees, taxes, liquidity and counterparty exposure were not tested in the cited analyses and can materially change an investor’s result.

Why Bitcoin can fail as a hedge during a crisis
Liquidity and interest-rate pressure
When central banks tighten policy, the discount rate applied to risky assets rises and available liquidity can shrink. The IMF’s finding that Federal Reserve tightening reduces the crypto factor is consistent with Bitcoin being sensitive to financial conditions rather than driven solely by a fixed-supply story.
Correlation rises when diversification is needed
A hedge is most useful when it behaves differently from the assets causing a portfolio’s loss. IMF Working Paper 23/213 found that crypto return and volatility spillovers increase during turbulence and risk-off episodes. If Bitcoin and equities become more connected during a sell-off, owning both may provide less protection than their calm-period behavior suggests.
Volatility can dominate the inflation effect
Even if an unexpected CPI increase produces a positive Bitcoin response on average, day-to-day and month-to-month price swings can be much larger than the inflation change being hedged. A temporary gain after an announcement cannot guarantee that an investor maintains purchasing power through the subsequent drawdown.

Should you buy Bitcoin when inflation is high?
High inflation alone is not a sufficient timing rule. The evidence does not establish a guaranteed holding period, an allocation percentage, a future return or protection after costs, taxes, custody failures, exchange failures or regulatory changes. A decision should begin with the role the asset is meant to play, then test whether its risks fit that role.
Best Value
Use this decision sequence
- Define the liability. Identify the currency, spending date and purchasing power you need to protect. The cited analyses concern U.S. inflation measures and do not establish a result for every country.
- Separate an announcement trade from a hedge. A strategy based on a CPI surprise is a short-term macro trade. A hedge requires a time horizon and a reason to expect protection across different inflation regimes.
- Check the benchmark. Decide whether your concern is headline CPI, Core PCE, expected inflation or a currency crisis. The observed Bitcoin response is not interchangeable across those cases.
- Stress-test risk-off behavior. Consider what happens if equities fall, interest rates rise and crypto-financial correlations increase at the same time.
- Account for implementation. Include custody arrangements, transaction and management fees, taxes, liquidity, counterparty exposure and applicable regulation. The cited empirical analyses do not supply any of these outcomes.
- Set a loss limit before acting. Do not treat the fixed-supply narrative as evidence that a chosen amount cannot suffer a large drawdown.
Can Bitcoin preserve purchasing power in a currency crisis?
It can only do so if its value, access and ability to be exchanged remain strong relative to the local currency and the goods a person needs. The cited analyses do not test currency crises, capital controls, local exchange rates, internet or power disruptions, or the practical ability to transfer and spend Bitcoin during an emergency.
They therefore cannot establish that Bitcoin will protect purchasing power in a particular country. A currency crisis may also bring market closures, legal restrictions, wider trading spreads or a shortage of counterparties. Those practical risks sit outside the inflation-response models and must be evaluated separately.
Common claims that the evidence does not prove
- “Bitcoin has a fixed supply, so it must hedge inflation.” A supply rule is a design characteristic; it is not evidence of a stable exchange value. The observed return still depends on demand, liquidity, rates and risk appetite.
- “Bitcoin rose after one CPI report, so it protects against inflation.” The CPI result concerns unexpected U.S. news in a particular sample. It does not cover Core PCE, all inflation readings or long-term real returns.
- “Bitcoin is uncorrelated with everything.” The New York Fed found orthogonality to monetary and macroeconomic news in one intraday sample, while the IMF Working Papers found increasing equity correlation and larger spillovers during stress.
- “A hedge cannot lose money.” Hedging reduces exposure to a defined risk; it does not eliminate volatility or guarantee a positive nominal return.
What is established—and what remains unknown
The strongest supported conclusion is conditional: Bitcoin sometimes responds positively to unexpected CPI inflation, but the result is sensitive to the index, period and market regime. Short-term inflation expectations offer only limited support, while gold has the more persistent relationship in Smales’s comparison and Rodriguez and Colombo’s study.
Important practical questions remain outside this evidence: the sources named above do not specify a reliable holding period, an appropriate portfolio weight, a 2026 price or a universal result for non-U.S. inflation. Fees, taxes, custody, exchange solvency and regulatory changes can determine an investor’s realized purchasing power even if the market relationship is positive.
