The practical distinction is between detection and remediation. Free Security can expose security, privacy and performance problems, but the free license does not guarantee that every recommended action is available without payment.
Is Avira Free Security actually free?
Yes, in the ordinary sense: you can install and use a free edition without buying Avira’s subscription. How Smart Scan and the antivirus workflow work
Smart Scan is designed as a broad health check rather than a virus-only scan. Avira says it checks for malware, privacy weaknesses, performance issues, junk files and outdated apps or drivers. That breadth explains why a scan can return recommendations that are not strictly antivirus findings.
- Open Smart Scan. Use the Smart Scan entry in Avira Free Security. The exact navigation can differ by operating system and app version.
- Allow the scan to complete. It evaluates the security, privacy and performance categories documented by Avira.
- Separate urgent detections from maintenance suggestions. A virus or suspicious file belongs in the security workflow; junk files, startup items and outdated software are maintenance findings.
- Review each proposed action. The free edition may identify an issue without being able to apply the corresponding fix.
- Quarantine detected files. Quarantine isolates a detection so it cannot run normally while you decide whether to remove or restore it.

Avira’s documentation does not establish that every detection is automatically removed, nor that every Smart Scan recommendation is repaired for free. AV-Comparatives’ Consumer Summary Report 2025 says Avira Free Antivirus participated in the consumer main-test series. It awarded Avira bronze in two named categories:

AV-TEST’s Windows results page lists Avira Internet Security for Windows version 1.1 at 6/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance and 6/6 for usability in August 2026. That is a paid Avira product. It is not a Free Security score, and transferring those perfect marks to the free edition would be a product mismatch. For a free-tier buying decision, the AV-Comparatives results above are the more directly relevant named evidence in this review.
Does Avira Free Security remove viruses?
It provides antivirus scanning and quarantine, so it can detect and isolate malware found by its engine. That is different from promising that every infection will be cleaned automatically. Avira’s Smart Scan guidance explicitly says the free edition may be unable to fix all identified issues without an upgrade, and an independent 2026 review reported that users may need to handle some scanner findings manually unless they upgrade.
When a scan reports a threat, use the product’s quarantine action and follow the result-specific instructions. If the application offers only a recommendation or asks you to upgrade, read the finding before paying: it may be a performance or privacy task rather than an active virus. For a stubborn detection, update the security software, repeat a full scan and use a second trusted diagnostic source; do not delete system files merely because a cleaner labels them as unnecessary.
VPN allowance and limitations
TechRadar’s 2026 free-antivirus review reported a 500 MB-per-month VPN allowance for Avira Free Security. That is enough for occasional text browsing or a short connection, not a substitute for an always-on VPN for video, large downloads or frequent travel. The figure and interface are volatile, so verify the allowance shown in your current Avira account before relying on it.

A capped VPN can still be useful for a brief session on an untrusted network, but the cap means you should monitor consumption. Windows, macOS, Android and iOS: do not assume parity
Avira says availability varies by operating system. The detailed list of firewall, File Shredder, Driver Updater, Startup Optimizer, Battery Saver and Duplicates Finder functions comes from Windows support material; it should not be read as a feature guarantee for macOS, Android or iOS.
Before installing, check the current product page or in-app feature list for your platform. Pay particular attention to whether the item you want is an antivirus scanner, a browser extension, a VPN allowance, a password manager or a Windows-only maintenance utility. A cross-platform name does not guarantee identical controls, scan depth or free limits.
