Is Australian Military Bank’s Standard Home Insurance Right for You?

Australian Military Bank’s Standard home insurance covers a broad set of listed events, but it does not automatically include accidental damage or electrical motor burnout. Whether it fits depends on your quote, chosen sums insured, item limits, excesses and the exact terms on your Certificate of Insurance and policy document. The product is distributed through Australian Military Bank and issued under the CGU brand; the bank’s comparison page is a guide, not the full contract.

What Australian Military Bank Standard covers

The bank offers Building Standard, Building Plus, Contents Standard and Contents Plus. Its online comparison lists insured events across these cover types, including accidental breakage of glass, animal damage, deliberate or intentional acts, earthquake, escape of water or liquid, explosion, fire, flood or rainwater run-off, impact, lightning, riot or civil commotion, storm, storm surge or tsunami, theft or attempted theft, and liability. The list is not a guarantee that every loss is covered: definitions, conditions, limits and exclusions in the applicable policy document and your Certificate of Insurance govern.

For the legal roles and current policy terms, check the bank’s Home Insurance page, its insurance disclosure, and the policy documents supplied with a quote. The bank identifies Australian Military Bank Ltd as acting under its own licence and under agreement with Insurance Australia Limited, which operates under the CGU brand.

What Standard leaves optional

Australian Military Bank’s comparison says accidental damage at home and electrical motor burnout are optional for Standard, while both are included in Plus. Contents policies also offer Portable Contents cover for items away from home and Valuable Contents cover for specified high-value items inside the home as options. Check whether each benefit is available for your cover type and circumstances, then compare its cost with the Plus quote rather than assuming the tiers are interchangeable.

The bank’s examples of accidental damage include a child breaking a television or someone putting a foot through a ceiling. These illustrate the kind of mishap the benefit addresses; they do not establish that a particular incident is covered. The chosen benefit, policy definition and exclusions decide that.

Contents limits and cover away from home

General contents are movable belongings kept in or around the home. Valuable contents are specified high-value categories that may have a separate limit, while Portable Contents cover applies to eligible items taken outside the home. The CGU Home Contents Key Facts Sheet, prepared 24 February 2025, gives an example aggregate limit of $2,500 for works of art, collections, jewellery and watches as general contents; optional cover may increase limits for some items. Verify categories, declared values and applicable sublimits in the policy document and schedule.

The same 2025 sheet gives a $5,000 total maximum for Tools of Trade under contents cover and a $20 million legal liability limit. Treat these as figures stated in that sheet, not as a substitute for checking the applicable policy type, definitions, schedule and policy document.

Items in storage

General contents in storage may be covered if CGU is notified before the move and accepts the arrangement. Valuable Contents are not covered while in storage according to the bank’s guidance. Contact the insurer and obtain confirmation before moving items; do not assume that ordinary home contents cover follows belongings into storage.

Waiting periods and other conditions to check

The government-prescribed CGU Home Contents Key Facts Sheet dated 24 February 2025 is a guide, not an insurance contract. It gives these examples of conditions:

  • Flood or rainwater run-off: a 14-day waiting period after cover starts.
  • Storm: a 72-hour waiting period after cover starts.
  • Bushfire and grassfire: a 72-hour waiting period after cover starts.
  • Actions of the sea: ordinary waves and normal sea-level movement, including high or king tides, are excluded unless caused by storm surge.
  • Theft or malicious damage: the sheet says damage or theft by the policyholder, family or people who normally live at the home, including a tenant, is not covered.
  • Escape of liquid: the sheet says the policy does not pay to repair the item the liquid escaped from.

These are examples, not a complete list of exclusions or conditions. Read the current policy document for the event definition and any further limits that apply to your property and claim.

Choosing sums insured

A sum insured is a maximum, not a promise that every loss will be paid up to that figure. The Key Facts Sheet advises valuing contents at replacement cost and warns that an inadequate sum can leave you underinsured. For contents, a room-by-room inventory can help you account for belongings and their replacement costs, while checking item limits for valuables.

For buildings, Australian Military Bank says customers are responsible for choosing enough cover to rebuild the home. Its online calculator is a guide. If the selected building sum insured exceeds the actual cost to repair, replace or rebuild, the bank says CGU pays only the actual cost. Neither the calculator nor a chosen sum guarantees that a rebuild estimate is adequate.

Claims and repairer choice

Claims can be lodged online at any time or by calling CGU Claims on 13 24 80. The bank says customers may choose their own home repairer, but the support differs:

  • Non-partner repairer: CGU does not guarantee workmanship or manage repair timing and quality, and the bank says it will pay only what CGU considers the fair and reasonable repair cost.

Check the claim process and applicable terms before deciding which repair route suits you.

How to compare a quote fairly

The available official material does not establish a standard premium or excess. Both depend on your quote and Certificate of Insurance, so a meaningful price comparison requires matching the details rather than relying on a generic price claim.

  1. Match the risk details: use the same address, building construction and occupancy information for each quote.
  2. Match the cover: compare the same building and contents sums insured, optional benefits, excesses and payment frequency.
  3. Compare what changes between tiers: price Standard with accidental damage and motor burnout options against Plus, and confirm benefit availability.
  4. Check contents adequacy: compare portable cover, valuable-item limits, and conditions for belongings in storage.
  5. Read the conditions: check waiting periods, flood and rainwater definitions, exclusions, and other policy terms.
  6. Compare claim arrangements: consider online and phone access, repairer choice, partner-repair guarantees and the limits on non-partner repair payments.
  7. Use the actual documents: confirm the premium, each applicable excess, sum insured, selected benefits and endorsements on the quote and Certificate of Insurance.

The Key Facts Sheet says different excesses may apply and that increasing an excess may lower the premium; it does not state an individual customer’s price or excess. The bank lists fortnightly, monthly and quarterly payment options at no extra cost. Servicing options can change, so confirm the current arrangements when obtaining a quote.

Who Standard may suit

Standard may be worth considering if its listed events and selected optional benefits match your needs and the quote provides adequate sums insured for your home and belongings. It is less straightforward for someone who wants accidental damage, motor burnout, portable cover or higher limits to be included without separately selecting or checking those options. There is no basis for a general value-for-money verdict without a specific quote and a like-for-like comparison.

The Key Facts Sheet dated 24 February 2025 also describes a 21-day cooling-off period after issue if no claim has been made. Confirm the current policy terms and your Certificate of Insurance for the precise conditions.
