Is Audio-Technica Good? What the ATH-M50x Can—and Can’t—Tell You

Audio-Technica makes products across headphones, microphones, turntables, and phono cartridges, so one model cannot establish the quality of the whole brand. The ATH-M50x is a useful example for evaluating its headphone range: the company positions it as a professional monitor headphone, while an independent review notes that it has no built-in microphone. Whether it suits you depends on your intended use and the specific product—not a brand-wide verdict.

What does Audio-Technica make?

Audio-Technica’s company history describes a portfolio that includes headphones, microphones, turntables, and phono cartridges. Its history page traces the VM phono cartridge format to patents obtained in the United Kingdom and United States in 1971, and names the ATH-M50, AT2020 microphone, and AT-LP120-USB turntable among products introduced in the 2000s. These are examples of the company’s range and history, not evidence of current availability or comparative performance. Audio-Technica’s company history also describes its aim of making high-quality audio accessible.

Are Audio-Technica headphones good?

There is no single answer that applies to every Audio-Technica headphone. A useful assessment starts with the model, the job it is meant to do, and the evidence available for that model. The ATH-M50x illustrates the distinction: the company describes it as a professional monitor headphone, but that positioning alone does not establish how it will suit every listener or prove a brand-wide level of performance.

What the ATH-M50x is designed for

On its India product page, Audio-Technica positions the ATH-M50x as a professional monitor headphone and says its circumaural design provides passive noise isolation. The company says it can connect to audio equipment or directly to a microphone for monitoring. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements. The regional product information is available at Audio-Technica India’s ATH-M50x page.

How to interpret comments about its sound

The same product page reproduces a comment attributed to TechRadar reviewer Andrew Williams describing the sound as energetic and bass-forward. That is a reviewer’s characterization, not a measured specification or a universal listening result. It can help frame what one reviewer noticed, but it should not substitute for deciding whether the sound suits your own work or preferences.

What is the ATH-M50x used for?

Its professional-monitor positioning makes the ATH-M50x relevant to people considering headphones for monitoring or music listening. Whether it is the right choice depends on the details of the task and setup: for example, whether you need an integrated microphone, wireless connection, active noise cancelling, speakers, or another component. The cited product information does not establish every compatibility or configuration detail, so check the specifications for the exact model and equipment before relying on a particular setup.

The M50x has a documented development history, but that history is not a performance test. Audio-Technica says the original M50 appeared in 2007. On its 2024 project page, product manager Hiroyasu Suzuki explains that the company gathered feedback from professionals who used the headphones daily and used it to develop the M50x in 2014. Suzuki said: “we went out and asked professionals, the people actually using these headphones daily, what features they liked and what they wanted, and we used their feedback to improve the headphones, creating the M50x in 2014.” This is the company’s account of the model’s development, not independent evidence of how it performs. Audio-Technica’s 2024 M50x project page provides that history.

Does the ATH-M50x have a microphone?

No built-in microphone is listed for the ATH-M50x in RTINGS’ independent review. It is a headphone rather than an all-in-one headset with an integrated mic, so callers, streamers, and gamers who need voice input should plan for a separate microphone or choose a headset with one. See RTINGS’ ATH-M50x review.

How to judge Audio-Technica products beyond the M50x

Do not use a headphone review as a proxy for a microphone, turntable, or cartridge. Audio-Technica’s history page names the AT2020 microphone and AT-LP120-USB turntable as portfolio examples, but those historical mentions do not establish that the exact older versions are currently sold or how they compare with alternatives. Evaluate each product category on its own requirements and verify the exact model’s features and compatibility.

  • For monitoring or everyday listening: compare the specific headphone’s fit, connection, sound characteristics, and features with your needs.
  • For recording or calls: verify whether the model includes a microphone or requires a separate one.
  • For DJ work: check the individual model’s fit, durability, cable, and connection details rather than relying on the brand name alone.
  • For vinyl playback: confirm the turntable, cartridge, stylus, and any required phono preamp are appropriate for your equipment; the available product examples do not resolve every setup question.

What the available evidence can establish

The sources support a specific, qualified view: Audio-Technica has a broad audio-product history, and the ATH-M50x is positioned by its maker as a professional monitor headphone. RTINGS identifies the absence of a built-in microphone, while the sound description on the manufacturer’s page is attributed to a TechRadar reviewer. These distinct evidence types should not be collapsed into a single quality score. The sources do not establish a brand-wide ranking, a current model-by-model buying comparison, or uniform performance across Audio-Technica products.
