Its more than 60 mobile-network-operator partners collectively reach over 3 billion subscribers, but those are carrier-network footprints—not 3 billion AST customers. Commercial revenue is beginning, yet the constellation, service activation and cash-generation milestones still have to catch up with a valuation built on substantial future growth. That makes ASTS a speculative, milestone-driven watchlist candidate or a small high-risk position for investors who can tolerate major losses, rather than an unconditional buy.
What the 3 billion subscriber figure actually measures
AST SpaceMobile is building a direct-to-device cellular broadband network that connects ordinary mobile phones through satellites. In its Q2 2026 update, the company said more than 60 mobile-network operators (MNOs) have partnerships covering more than 3 billion subscribers in aggregate.

That number describes the customer bases of partner operators whose networks could distribute SpaceMobile service. It does not mean AST SpaceMobile has 3 billion paying users, that all of those subscribers will be eligible at launch, or that they will use the satellite service. Actual revenue depends on regulatory approvals, technical integration, service activation, pricing and usage on each partner network.

The partnerships are strategically important because carriers provide spectrum access, billing and customer distribution. They reduce the need for AST to build a retail wireless brand from scratch, but a signed agreement is still several steps removed from recurring service revenue.

Revenue is starting, but scale remains unproven
AST reported $70.9 million of full-year 2025 revenue, including mobile-network-operator and US-government work. Management guided to $150 million to $200 million of revenue for 2026 and reported approximately $1.30 billion of aggregate contracted revenue backlog in the Q2 2026 release.
| Metric | Reported figure | What it means for investors |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 revenue | $70.9 million | The company became revenue-generating, but the base is still small relative to the valuation. |
| 2026 revenue guidance | $150 million–$200 million | Management expects substantial year-over-year growth; guidance depends on execution and timing. |
| Contracted revenue backlog | Approximately $1.30 billion | Signed or committed business provides visibility, but it is not the same as revenue already recognized or cash collected. |
Chairman and CEO Abel Avellan said in the full-year 2025 results release: "For the first time in 2025, AST SpaceMobile became a revenue generating business and it significantly advanced all key aspects of our operations including commercial, government, manufacturing, spectrum rights, IP portfolio, and capital position."
The key question is backlog conversion. Investors need to see contracted work turn into recognized revenue and then into repeatable service usage, rather than relying on one-time development, government or integration payments.

The constellation is the gating item
AST reported 13 spacecraft in orbit after the BlueBird 8–13 missions in its Q2 2026 update. The company targeted 45 to 60 satellites in orbit by the end of 2026. That target is central to the investment case because network coverage, capacity and service reliability expand as more spacecraft are available.
The newest satellites are described on AST SpaceMobile’s SpaceMobile Network page as approximately 2,400 square feet, with 10 GHz of processing bandwidth and peak speeds above 150 Mbps per coverage cell. The intended use cases include voice, video, text and streaming. Those specifications describe system capability; they do not guarantee that every partner market will receive those speeds or that commercial demand will support them.
A missed launch, slower manufacturing or an orbital failure would delay coverage and revenue while leaving operating costs and financing needs in place. Until the company demonstrates a repeatable launch and deployment cadence, the satellite count remains a more useful operating checkpoint than the headline subscriber reach.

How carrier partnerships can become cash revenue
AST’s business model requires several links to work in sequence:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Regulatory and spectrum approvals: AST and each carrier must secure permission to provide service in the relevant country and use the required spectrum.
- Satellite deployment: Enough spacecraft must be launched and commissioned to provide usable coverage and capacity.
- Network integration: Carrier systems, devices, gateways and billing arrangements have to interoperate with the satellite network.
- Commercial activation: Partners must turn on service for eligible subscribers, set prices and market the offering.
- Usage and settlement: Customers must actually use the service, with revenue recognized under the commercial contracts.
Verizon is a named US partner for direct-to-cellular service beginning in 2026. That is a concrete commercialization milestone, but the partnership alone does not establish subscriber take-up, revenue per user or profitability. Similar dependencies apply to AST’s international partners and to government-related work.
Is ASTS valuation pricing in too much success?
At the October 16, 2026 close, ASTS traded at $40.66. A Yahoo Finance snapshot dated September 23, 2026 showed approximately $17.98 billion in market capitalization, $18.69 billion in enterprise value and a trailing price-to-sales ratio of 149.24. Yahoo also reported a Q2 FY2026 profit margin of negative 732.58%.

| Market measure | Figure and date | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Share price | $40.66 at the October 16, 2026 close | A market price, not a measure of whether the network has met its operating targets. |
| Market capitalization | About $17.98 billion, September 23, 2026 snapshot | Shows how much future growth investors are valuing before large-scale service revenue exists. |
| Enterprise value | About $18.69 billion, September 23, 2026 snapshot | Includes the value attributed to the business after accounting for capital structure. |
| Trailing price-to-sales | 149.24, September 23, 2026 snapshot | Extremely high on current sales, so the thesis depends on rapid future revenue growth. |
| Analyst consensus | Hold; $74.28 average target from 13 analysts, with a $42.50 low and $108 high | The wide range signals substantial disagreement and is not a guarantee of future performance. |
The valuation can make sense only if satellite deployment, service activation and backlog conversion produce a much larger revenue base than today’s numbers. A high price-to-sales multiple also leaves less room for execution delays, dilution or weaker-than-expected customer usage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Risks that could break the thesis
AST’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies several risks that are particularly material for this company:
- Limited operating history: There is little long-term evidence for margins, retention or recurring service economics.
- Launch dependence: Launch-provider availability, schedule changes and cost overruns can delay the constellation.
- Manufacturing and technical execution: Building, testing and operating large satellites at the planned pace is complex.
- Regulation and spectrum: Approvals may take longer, impose conditions or prevent service in a target market.
- Partner execution: Carriers may delay integration, launch service later than planned or generate less usage than expected.
- Competition: Terrestrial wireless operators and other satellite providers could offer alternative coverage or pricing.
- Financing and dilution: Constellation expansion requires substantial capital; raising funds can dilute existing shareholders or increase debt.
- Commercial viability: Even a functioning network might not produce revenue at a level that supports the current valuation.
The most damaging combination would be a missed launch cadence alongside delayed approvals or weak carrier monetization. In that scenario, costs continue while the revenue timeline moves further out.

A practical framework for deciding whether to buy ASTS
ASTS fits investors seeking highly volatile exposure to a potentially large direct-to-device market, not investors who require established earnings or dependable cash flow. Before buying, track these checkpoints rather than the subscriber headline alone:
- Does the spacecraft count move toward the 45–60 target by the end of 2026?
- Does reported revenue approach the $150 million–$200 million 2026 guidance range?
- Is the approximately $1.30 billion backlog converted into recognized revenue on a consistent schedule?
- Do Verizon and other partners activate service and report evidence of real usage?
- Can AST fund launches and capital expenditure without unacceptable dilution?
- Do regulatory approvals and spectrum arrangements arrive in the countries represented by the partnership base?
Investors comparing AST with other high-growth communications or satellite companies should use the same axes: satellites in orbit versus coverage promised, contracted backlog versus recognized revenue, carrier distribution and spectrum access, cash and dilution risk, launch dependence, competitive alternatives, and enterprise value relative to credible forward revenue.
A conventional value investor may reasonably wait for additional satellites, recurring service revenue and improving margins before taking a position. A risk-tolerant investor who buys earlier should treat ASTS as a speculative allocation, size it so a severe loss is survivable, and reassess it at each launch and revenue milestone.
Bottom line
The more than 3 billion subscriber figure is a meaningful distribution advantage, but it is not proof of 3 billion customers or near-term profits. ASTS remains a high-risk, milestone-driven speculation whose investment case depends on building the constellation, activating carrier service and converting contracts into durable revenue.
