Yes—if you want a large Viking action RPG built around exploration, raids, settlement building and flexible combat. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is less suitable if you want a short, tightly paced campaign or a game led mainly by stealth and classic Assassin-versus-Templar missions.

For a first-time player, the premise is easy to follow: Eivor leads a Viking clan from Norway to England, builds a home at Ravensthorpe and forms alliances across the country. You can start without knowing every earlier Assassin’s Creed plot, although returning players will notice more franchise and modern-day context.

What Assassin’s Creed Valhalla actually is

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla launched worldwide on 10 November 2020. It is a Viking-themed action RPG rather than a pure stealth game. You control Eivor, a warrior whose clan leaves Norway because of conflict and limited resources, then settles in England. The main loop combines regional story arcs, combat, exploration, raids, character progression and the development of Ravensthorpe, your settlement.

Ubisoft’s official description highlights several ways to approach an encounter: close-quarters weapons, bows and Hidden Blade assassinations. Dual wielding, fortress raids and assaults are also central features. Stealth is available, but the game does not require you to sneak through most content or treat every mission as a traditional assassin operation.

Can you understand the story as a newcomer?

Yes. The migration from Norway to England gives the campaign a clear starting point, and the early settlement objectives explain the political and personal stakes. You do not need a detailed series primer to understand why Eivor is travelling, fighting or negotiating.

Earlier games add context to recurring ideas, characters and the modern-day material. That extra knowledge can make some scenes more meaningful, but the available official material does not establish that new players need to play previous entries first. Treat Valhalla as an accessible entry point with optional franchise history rather than as a direct continuation that demands homework.

How the story is structured

Regional arcs instead of one uninterrupted campaign

After establishing Ravensthorpe, you pursue alliances in different English regions. Each arc has its own local conflict, characters and objectives, while the settlement and Eivor’s broader goals connect the pieces. This structure lets you alternate between political story missions, travel, combat and optional discoveries.

The benefit is variety: you are not locked into one setting or mission type for the entire game. The trade-off is pacing. The campaign can feel episodic when you move from one regional commitment to another, and its overall scale asks for a substantial time investment. A 2026 PC Gamer roundup praised the world’s detail and breadth while warning that completing the game takes a long time. That is reviewer judgment, not a measured completion-time guarantee.

World Events replace many conventional side quests

Narrative Director Darby McDevitt explained that the team moved away from the more traditional side-quest model used in Origins and Odyssey in favour of World Events. These shorter encounters are discovered in the environment and often begin without a long quest-chain interface.

  • Viking Warrior Experience: Step into the role of Eivor, a fierce Viking raider driven by tales of battle and glory, as you lead your clan from the harsh shores of Norway to the rich lands of England's Dark Ages
  • Epic Raiding Gameplay: Launch devastating raids on Saxon troops and fortresses, gathering resources and wealth to strengthen your clan while carving your path through a beautifully realized open world
  • Settlement Building: Establish and expand your own Viking settlement, constructing buildings, recruiting new clan members, and customizing your growing community to create a thriving home for your people
  • Political Power Dynamics: Forge strategic alliances with various kingdoms and factions across England, making critical decisions that shape your influence and determine your clan's future in a land torn by conflict
  • PlayStation 5 Optimized: Experience enhanced graphics, faster loading times, and immersive gameplay designed specifically for PlayStation 5 hardware, bringing the Viking Age to life with stunning visual fidelity

World Events can make exploration feel less like clearing a checklist and more like stumbling into local stories. They are not all equally substantial, and not every optional event is essential to Eivor’s main journey. If you prefer a tightly signposted quest log with clearly ranked side missions, this approach may feel irregular; if you like unexpected diversions, it supports the open-world design.

Do choices change the story?

Yes, conversations and combat decisions can affect Eivor’s path. Ubisoft presents the game as a choice-oriented narrative, and McDevitt said, “I think the goal of any good game is to allow a player to make interesting decisions.” Read that as meaningful variation in relationships, scenes and some outcomes—not as a promise that every dialogue option radically rewrites the entire campaign.

What combat feels like

Melee fighting is the default strength

Valhalla’s combat is built for direct confrontation. You can use one-handed weapons, heavier two-handed options and dual-wield combinations, with attacks, defensive moves and abilities shaping each fight. The Viking setting is reflected in raids and assaults that put you in large, noisy battles rather than isolated duels.

Combat rewards switching tactics instead of committing to one animation or weapon forever. A close-range approach is usually the most immediate way to experience the game, while equipment and progression let you tune Eivor toward preferred weapon types and abilities.

Bows and assassination are alternatives, not requirements

Bows provide ranged damage and a way to soften or isolate targets before entering a fight. The Hidden Blade enables assassinations when positioning and enemy conditions allow it. These tools make stealth a viable option for selected encounters, but the broader game is designed around fighting openly as well.

  • Explore a Dark Age open world, from the harsh shores of Norway to the beautiful kingdoms of England

If your ideal Assassin’s Creed experience is built almost entirely around staying unseen, Valhalla may not match that expectation. If you want the freedom to open with an assassination, switch to a bow and then finish a fortress battle with melee weapons, its hybrid design is more accommodating.

Raids change the rhythm

Raids are organized assaults on locations in England. They provide resources used to improve Ravensthorpe and create a distinct loop: travel to a target, begin the attack, defeat resistance and gather what the settlement needs. This gives exploration a practical purpose beyond collecting scenery or completing isolated objectives.

The open world and Ravensthorpe

Exploration is the main attraction

England is presented as a broad historical-fantasy landscape with settlements, fortifications, secrets, activities and regional stories. The world’s scale is not decorative; travelling through it is how you discover World Events, identify raid targets, find equipment and encounter characters who are not waiting in a conventional quest hub.

That breadth is also the central commitment. The game repeatedly asks you to cross large areas, investigate optional locations and develop your character before moving to the next major story beat. Players who enjoy wandering and gradual progression are likely to see this as the point. Players who prefer a compact sequence of missions may experience the same design as padding, even when the individual locations are detailed.

Settlement building gives the campaign a home base

Ravensthorpe grows as your clan establishes itself. Raids supply resources, and settlement development gives those resources a continuing purpose. The base is more than a menu: it is the place where your clan’s presence in England becomes visible and where upgrades support further progression.

This system ties together several activities. Exploration finds opportunities, raids provide materials and settlement improvements make the campaign feel like an expanding community rather than a series of disconnected missions. It also means that players who dislike management or incremental upgrades may find the main loop less appealing than the combat alone suggests.

Why the game can be worth playing

  • A clear Viking fantasy: the clan migration, raids and settlement give the setting a coherent identity.
  • Flexible encounters: melee weapons, bows and assassinations let you vary your approach.
  • A world built for wandering: regional arcs and World Events reward curiosity outside the main path.
  • Visible progression: Eivor’s growth and Ravensthorpe’s development provide goals beyond finishing the next mission.
  • Newcomer-friendly premise: the central conflict is understandable without mastering earlier games.

Why you might skip it or wait for a discount

  • Scale can become a burden: the breadth that attracts explorers can make the campaign feel long and unevenly paced.
  • It is not a stealth-first game: direct combat and raids are at least as important as assassination.
  • Regional storytelling can feel fragmented: moving between alliance arcs may reduce the momentum of a single, tightly focused plot.
  • Optional content is easy to overdo: World Events and discoveries are varied, but pursuing everything can delay the main story.
  • Edition confusion is possible: expansions and bonus content differ by edition and region, so the cheapest listing is not always the package you expect.

Choosing an edition in 2026

Ubisoft’s edition-contents article, updated 30 September 2026, lists the following packages. Content can vary by region, so verify the exact platform-store listing before paying.

Edition Listed contents
Standard Base game
Deluxe Base game and Ultimate Pack
Ragnarök Edition Base game and Dawn of Ragnarök
Complete Edition Base game, Dawn of Ragnarök, Ultimate Pack and Season Pass
Collector and Ubisoft+ Premium bundles Bundle contents are listed separately and may vary; check the current local offer.

The practical choice is simple: buy Standard if you only want the main game; choose a package with Dawn of Ragnarök if that expansion is part of your plan; and compare the Complete Edition against separate expansion pricing before purchasing. Do not assume that an edition name has identical contents in every country or storefront.

Platforms and availability

Ubisoft lists Valhalla for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Amazon Luna, and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Store. Ubisoft+ is also listed as an access option. Subscription catalogues, platform support and storefront availability can change, so confirm the local listing for your device at the time of purchase.

On console, make sure you are buying the edition for the generation and store account you intend to use. On PC, compare the store page’s edition name and included add-ons rather than relying on a retailer’s abbreviated title.

A sensible first-time-player plan

  1. Start with the opening in Norway. It introduces Eivor, the clan and the basic combat vocabulary before the English settlement becomes your long-term objective.
  2. Learn all three approaches. Practise a direct melee fight, use a bow from range and test the Hidden Blade when an encounter permits it. You will know which tools suit you before the map opens fully.
  3. Follow the early settlement objectives. Ravensthorpe upgrades explain why raids matter and give the resources you collect a clear purpose.
  4. Choose alliance arcs deliberately. You do not need to clear every nearby activity before advancing. Follow the region that interests you, then return for optional discoveries when you want a break.
  5. Sample World Events without treating them as mandatory. They are designed as compact environmental stories, not a second checklist that must be completed before the next main arc.
  6. Alternate travel and combat. Long stretches of exploration feel better when broken up with raids, story missions or settlement visits instead of trying to exhaust one region in a single pass.
  7. Review the edition before buying expansions. Confirm whether Dawn of Ragnarök, the Ultimate Pack and the Season Pass are already included in your package.

Common expectations that lead to disappointment

“Every mission should feel like a classic assassination.”

That expectation does not fit Valhalla’s design. Assassinations are one tool inside a game that gives equal prominence to open combat, raids and settlement growth.

“I must complete everything before continuing.”

You do not. The regional structure supports selective exploration. Treat optional World Events and discoveries as activities to pursue when they interest you, not as obligations that define whether you are playing correctly.

“A choice guarantees a completely different campaign.”

Choices can affect Eivor’s path, relationships and scenes, but the available official descriptions do not support the claim that every decision creates a wholly separate story. Make decisions for the situations they present rather than expecting unlimited branching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The largest edition is automatically the best value.”

That depends on whether you want the expansion and bonus packs. Regional contents differ, and a bundle only makes sense if its included material matches how you intend to play.

What the launch and current reception tell you

Ubisoft reported that Valhalla’s day-one player base was more than double that of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. This is Ubisoft’s own launch-period comparison of day-one player bases; it is not a sales figure, a count of total players or a measure of current activity.

Because the game launched in 2020, the useful question now is not whether it was a new release worth following, but whether its long-form design fits your available time and preferred style. Current review commentary continues to praise the world’s scale and detail while cautioning that completion takes a long time. No precise, independently measured completion time is established here, so plan around a substantial commitment rather than a promised number of hours.

The Bottom Line

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is worth playing when its Viking setting, open-world exploration, raids and settlement progression sound more exciting than its length sounds intimidating. Newcomers can begin without a series primer; stealth-focused players and anyone seeking a compact campaign should wait for a strong discount or choose a different style of Assassin’s Creed game.
