What does “fair” mean to you?
Fairness in an extraction shooter can mean different things: facing a squad of comparable size, encountering players with a similar approach to PvP, or being certain that other players cannot attack you. ARC Raiders addresses the first two through its matchmaking design, but its normal mode does not provide the third.

- Comparable squad size: Embark says equal squad sizes are prioritized where possible.
- Fewer hostile encounters: Matchmaking considers past playstyle, particularly how players interact with other Raiders, to make similar styles more likely to meet.
- No hostile PvP: Standard Topside matchmaking does not offer PvE-only lobbies or servers.
So the short version is: ARC Raiders may suit players willing to accept uncertain human encounters; it is a poor fit for anyone who needs a guarantee of peaceful sessions.
How ARC Raiders matchmaking works—and what it does not promise
In its May 20, 2026 explanation, Embark said the system weighs multiple factors. Past-round playstyle, especially interactions with other Raiders, is among the strongest. The developer describes fairness partly as matching players with similar chances of success, and says squad sizes are matched where possible. It also characterizes playstyle as a continuum rather than a simple friendly-versus-aggressive switch.

Embark’s key qualification is: “Similarity is more likely, not guaranteed.” It also says: “There are no ‘PvE-only’ lobbies/servers where other Raiders will never attack you.” A player’s individual match quality is not established by this system description; it is the developer’s account of how matchmaking is designed.
The same explanation says a single action does not immediately define a player’s profile: the system considers patterns over time. Embark says defending yourself is no longer treated the same as starting a fight, and low-activity rounds carry less weight. These details may matter if you are concerned that one defensive encounter will permanently label you as an aggressive player, but they do not turn standard matchmaking into a PvE guarantee. What ARC Raiders is like as an extraction adventure
ARC Raiders is a multiplayer extraction adventure set on a lethal future Earth. Players scavenge while facing both hostile machines and other Raiders, then try to extract. The official game site lists cross-platform social play across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Steam describes solo play or parties of up to three, alongside scavenging, crafting in a workshop, quests, changing map conditions, machine threats, and PvP encounters.
This mix makes the game a more plausible choice for someone who wants PvE threats and cooperative play to be part of the extraction loop, without expecting the PvP risk to disappear. Steam lists the release date as October 30, 2025. Its page showed 81% positive among 199,942 English-language reviews overall, and 53% positive among 2,522 reviews in the preceding 30 days, in a snapshot captured October 3, 2026. What the October 2026 PvE test changes
Embark scheduled a limited PvE matchmaking test for October 13–20, 2026. During the test, players can toggle between standard PvPvE and PvE matchmaking. In the test mode, player-to-player damage is disabled; solo players, duos, and trios share sessions; loot value is lower; and selected high-tension conditions are excluded. Embark says the test does not affect PvPvE matchmaking rating.
The event is explicitly temporary: Embark says the toggle will be removed when the test ends and matchmaking will return to normal. It therefore offers a brief way to try a no-player-damage version, not evidence of an enduring PvE option. Read Embark’s PvE test announcement.
In that September 24, 2026 announcement, Embark reported that 37% of players were friendly co-op players, 27% mixed, and 34% pure PvP players. It also said over 70% of friendly players and 40% of PvP players wanted fewer hostile encounters, and that 51% of surveyed players had expressed interest in a dedicated PvE option. The announcement did not provide the survey sample size or methodology in the material available, so these are Embark-reported figures, not independently audited market-wide estimates.

ARC Raiders compared with Hunt: Showdown 1896 and Marathon
These alternatives offer different extraction-shooter emphases. Their official descriptions establish what the core loop involves, but do not establish that either has fairer matchmaking or a permanent PvE-only option.

For Hunt: Showdown 1896, the bounty objective creates a clear point of conflict with rival hunters. Marathon is also described in terms of rival crews and risky decisions. Neither description supports calling those games objectively fairer than ARC Raiders.
Which game should you choose?
- Choose ARC Raiders if you want scavenging, machine threats, squad play, and a chance—but no promise—of meeting Raiders with a similar playstyle.
- Look at Hunt: Showdown 1896 if the appeal is a tense bounty hunt where rival players are part of the objective-driven encounter.
- Look at Marathon if you want an online extraction loop centered on exploration, rival crews, and the risk of deciding whether to push on or extract.
- Do not choose standard ARC Raiders expecting PvE-only play. Its scheduled October test is limited in duration and changes how sessions and loot work.
Embark and Nexon reported four million copies sold and more than 700,000 concurrent players across all platforms in Q3 2025. Those are historical launch-period figures, not current audience numbers, and they do not answer whether a given player will find matches fair. Nexon’s Q3 2025 letter gives the dated context.
