Is ARC Raiders Worth Playing? A Practical Guide to Its Gameplay and Progression

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Short answer: ARC Raiders is worth playing if you enjoy extraction games where every run balances useful loot, quest progress and the risk of losing an opportunity when hostile machines or other players disrupt your plan. It is not a purely cooperative PvE game in its standard format: the default experience is PvPvE, so player-versus-player danger is part of the tension. As of October 16, 2026, Embark is running a limited PvE matchmaking test scheduled for October 13–20, but you should treat that as a temporary test rather than a guaranteed permanent mode.

The game’s appeal therefore depends less on a simple quality score and more on your tolerance for uncertainty. If you want deliberate extraction decisions, a science-fiction setting and character growth tied to quests, it has a clear proposition. If you want predictable co-op missions, a permanent PvE queue or a conventional campaign, the fit is less certain.

What ARC Raiders is

A multiplayer extraction adventure

ARC Raiders is set on a future Earth threatened by mechanized enemies known as ARC. Its central activity is an extraction-style outing: you enter a dangerous area, pursue objectives and collect useful items, then try to leave with the value of that run intact. The official description presents it as a multiplayer adventure rather than a solo story campaign, so the social context matters even when your immediate objective is a quest or a piece of equipment.

The danger comes from two directions. ARC machines are the environmental threat, while other players can introduce competition, ambushes or conflicting priorities. That combination is what separates the game from a straightforward cooperative shooter. You are not simply clearing a sequence of missions; you are deciding how much to pursue before the risk of continuing outweighs the reward.

Why the extraction structure matters

In a conventional mission-based game, completing an objective usually means the reward is secure. An extraction game asks a second question: can you successfully leave after earning that reward? The practical consequence is that a modest, safe run can be more valuable than an ambitious run that ends before you can capitalize on it. ARC Raiders’ quests, gear and crafting materials make that calculation relevant because each outing can advance several goals at once.

The game’s design is likely to suit players who enjoy making decisions with incomplete information. You may need to decide whether to continue toward another objective, change direction because of machine activity, or leave while your current haul is already useful. The specific penalties and reset rules are not established in the available official material, so do not assume that every failed run has the same cost as another extraction game.

How a typical ARC Raiders session works

The broad loop can be understood as a sequence of decisions rather than a fixed mission script.

  1. Choose a purpose for the run. A quest, a material requirement, experience and general gear collection are all valid goals. Picking one primary objective keeps the run understandable when several opportunities appear.
  2. Enter a match and read the situation. ARC activity and the presence of other players determine how much freedom you have. The game’s standard PvPvE format means that an apparently quiet route is not necessarily uncontested.
  3. Gather items that support progression. Quests award gear, crafting materials and XP according to the official Steam description. Those rewards connect a successful extraction to both immediate equipment needs and longer-term Raider development.
  4. Reassess risk before extending the run. A second objective may be attractive, but additional time can expose you to more machine encounters or player conflict. The right choice depends on what you already carry and how important the next objective is.
  5. Attempt extraction. Reaching the extraction stage is the point at which planning and restraint matter. The official material confirms the extraction-oriented structure but does not publish a universal rule for every item or failure outcome.
  6. Use the result to plan the next outing. Successful quest progress, materials, XP and skill points should inform your next objective. A failed attempt can still teach you which goals are too ambitious to combine, even though the exact recovery consequences are not specified in the available sources.

This loop is compelling when the decisions themselves are entertaining. It can feel frustrating if you regard any interruption by another player as wasted time. Before buying, be honest about which reaction is more likely for you.

Can you play ARC Raiders as PvE only?

The standard mode is PvPvE

In the normal format, ARC Raiders combines cooperative or individual activity against ARC machines with the possibility of encounters with other players. PvP is therefore not an optional background detail; it is part of the standard risk model. You can approach a run with a cooperative mindset, but another group may not share that plan.

The October 2026 PvE matchmaking test

Embark announced a limited test running from October 13 through October 20, 2026. During that window, players can choose between classic PvPvE matchmaking and a PvE experience focused on cooperating against ARC. As of October 16, the announced test period is still in progress.

Question What is established What remains uncertain
Can you select PvE during the test? Yes. Embark announced a PvE matchmaking option for October 13–20, 2026. The announcement does not establish that the option will remain after October 20.
Is PvPvE still available? Yes. The classic PvPvE queue is part of the announced choice. Future matchmaking rules or queue balance are not stated.
Is PvE a permanent mode? Not confirmed by the announcement covered here. Do not purchase on the assumption that a permanent PvE-only queue will exist after the test.

If PvE cooperation is your main reason for considering the game, the test is useful evidence that Embark is exploring that preference, but it is not a long-term guarantee. Check a newer official announcement before making a purchase based on post-test availability.

How progression works

Quests connect short-term rewards to long-term growth

The official Steam description identifies four important quest outcomes: gear, crafting materials, XP and skill points. Gear affects what you can use in future outings; materials support crafting; XP advances your Raider; and skill points unlock abilities. That structure gives even a routine objective a purpose beyond the immediate match.

Progression is therefore not just a level number. A run can be valuable because it completes a quest, supplies a material you need, grants experience or provides points for a build decision. The most efficient approach is to choose objectives that overlap. For example, if a quest naturally takes you toward materials you already need, one outing can advance both goals instead of forcing separate trips.

The three named skill areas

Steam lists three skill-tree branches:

  • Survival: the branch name signals an emphasis on staying effective in dangerous situations.
  • Mobility: the branch name indicates movement-oriented development.
  • Conditioning: the branch name indicates physical or endurance-oriented development.

The names alone do not establish every ability or the exact numerical effect of each point. Treat them as build directions rather than a complete specification. Read the in-game description of an ability before committing points, especially if the system allows meaningful trade-offs.

How to think about skill-point choices

For a first character, prioritize the branch that supports the way you already make decisions in a run. A cautious player who extracts early may value a different sequence from someone who takes longer routes and accepts more exposure. Avoid spending points solely because an ability sounds generally useful; ask whether it changes the situations that cause you to fail or abandon objectives.

Keep a simple record of the problem you are trying to solve: reaching objectives safely, surviving machine pressure, escaping after a contested encounter or moving efficiently between locations. When a new ability addresses that problem, the point has a clear purpose. This approach is more reliable than copying a build without knowing whether its assumptions match your play.

What the Frozen Trail update changes

Release date and skill-tree rework

The Frozen Trail update went live on October 8, 2026. A PC Gamer preview published on October 7 described a reworked tree that combines old and new abilities. The preview also noted that some branch choices require selecting between abilities, which makes progression more deliberate than simply unlocking every option in a linear order.

What that means for a new or returning player

The preview characterized the rework as meaningful for long-term progression but not an immediate transformation of the entire game. That is an editorial assessment from the preview, not a universal performance claim. In practical terms, the update matters most if you expect to play enough runs for build decisions to accumulate. Someone trying the game for a single evening may notice the new structure without yet feeling its full effect.

Because the tree has been changed, older guides may describe choices that no longer match the live version. When following advice, verify that it refers to the post–October 8 update and to your current platform version. If an old recommendation assumes that every ability in a branch can be taken, it may not apply to a system with mutually exclusive selections.

Platforms and the buying question

PC Listed Confirm the supported storefront, operating-system requirements and current local price.

Xbox Series X|S Listed Check the regional console store listing, online-service requirements and price.
GeForce NOW Listed Verify that your membership tier, region and account connections support the game.

The available information does not establish a current price for any region, edition or storefront. Prices, discounts and subscription requirements can change independently, so use your local store page for the figure that applies to you. Who is most likely to enjoy ARC Raiders?

  • Extraction-game fans: You enjoy deciding when a haul is good enough and when another objective is worth the danger.
  • Players who like PvPvE tension: You find the possibility of another squad interesting rather than an unwanted interruption.
  • Build-oriented players: You want quests and skill points to shape a Raider over multiple sessions.
  • Science-fiction co-op groups: You like coordinating against mechanized enemies while accepting that the default environment is not fully controlled.
  • Players comfortable with an evolving live game: You can adapt to updates such as the Frozen Trail skill-tree rework and check current mode announcements.

Who should wait or skip it?

  • Players who require permanent PvE-only matchmaking: The October 13–20 option is a limited test, and continuation is not confirmed.
  • Players who dislike losing momentum to other people: PvP is part of the standard format, so a contested encounter can change a run that was focused on PvE objectives.
  • Players seeking a traditional campaign: The official descriptions emphasize a multiplayer extraction adventure, not a linear single-player story.
  • Players who want fully documented progression rules before starting: The available official material names rewards and branches but does not publish every reset, failure or economy rule.
  • Players making a purchase solely from a storefront rating: A rating snapshot can inform your decision but cannot tell you whether the risk model suits your preferences.

A practical decision framework

Use these questions before spending money or committing a group’s time.

Decision factor Good fit if… Warning sign if…
PvP intrusion You enjoy adapting when another player changes the situation. You need every PvE objective to remain insulated from human opponents.
Extraction risk The possibility of leaving with a larger haul makes each run exciting. You find an interrupted or unsuccessful run unacceptable.
Progression pace You like gradual quest, XP and skill-point development. You want immediate access to a complete toolkit.
Build choices You are willing to choose among Survival, Mobility and Conditioning options. You prefer a fixed character with no meaningful allocation decisions.
Mode availability You can enjoy PvPvE even if the temporary PvE test ends. Your purchase only makes sense if PvE remains permanently selectable.
Platform and price Your local store lists a supported version at a price you accept. You are relying on an unverified regional price or edition.

This framework is more useful than asking whether the game is universally good. Extraction games produce sharply different reactions because the same uncertainty that creates excitement for one player creates frustration for another.

How to approach your first week

1. Decide which mode you are actually evaluating

If you are playing during the October 13–20 test, select the mode that answers your real buying question. Choose PvE if you want to assess cooperation against ARC without the standard player-versus-player pressure. Also try the classic PvPvE queue if you are considering the game as it is normally presented. A PvE-only trial can tell you whether the machine encounters are enjoyable, but it cannot tell you whether you will like the full risk model.

2. Set one primary objective per outing

Use a quest, a material requirement or general progression as the run’s anchor. You can pursue secondary opportunities, but a primary objective gives you a clear reason to extract rather than wandering until the risk becomes difficult to judge.

3. Learn what makes you leave

After each run, identify the signal that should trigger extraction: completing the quest step, obtaining a needed material, reaching a comfortable amount of gear or encountering a threat that makes the remaining objective disproportionate. The game’s appeal depends on these judgments, so practice making them deliberately rather than waiting for a perfect run.

4. Spend skill points with a problem in mind

Review the available Survival, Mobility and Conditioning choices, then select an ability that addresses a recurring weakness in your own play. Because the Frozen Trail rework includes choices between abilities, read the alternatives before confirming a selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Recheck current information after an update

Use post–October 8, 2026 guides for the current skill tree, and check official announcements for mode changes after October 20. Live-service details can change faster than general reviews, particularly when a feature is explicitly described as a test.

How much weight should you give the Steam rating?

A Steam snapshot observed on October 13, 2026 recorded 200,564 English-language reviews, with 81% marked positive. That is a useful indication that a large number of reviewers had a favorable experience at that moment, but it is not a permanent quality score. The count and percentage can change as new players review the game, updates alter the experience or the storefront recalculates its display.

Read the rating alongside your own requirements. An 81% positive snapshot cannot answer whether PvP will bother you, whether the temporary PvE test meets your needs or whether the progression choices feel satisfying to you. Those are fit questions, not popularity questions.

Final buying recommendation

Buy ARC Raiders when you want a multiplayer extraction adventure built around loot, quests, crafting materials, XP and skill-point decisions, and when PvPvE tension is part of the appeal. Consider trying it during the October 13–20, 2026 PvE test if cooperative machine fights are your main interest, but do not treat that test as proof of a permanent PvE-only mode. Wait for a newer official announcement if permanent PvE availability is essential, and verify your local platform price because no regional price is established here.
